I’d like to begin this morning by asking you a very big, hairy, in-your-face kind of question: do you really believe that Jesus is coming back? If you do, two even bigger, hairier and even more in-your-face questions stem from this: do you really believe that there is eternal life for all who are in Christ, and do you really believe there is eternal damnation for all those who are not in Christ?
今朝はとても重大で難しい大胆な質問をすることから始めたいと思います。イエス様が戻ってこられるということを本当に信じていますか？もし信じているなら、あと２つもっと重大で難しく、もっと大胆な質問をします。キリストにあるすべての人たちのために永遠の命があることを本当に信じていますか？そして、キリストを信じない人たちすべてには永遠の天罰があることを本当に信じていますか？
These are big questions because more than anything else, these questions will determine how, as believers in Christ, we will live out our lives here on earth. If you could physically go into eternity – into heaven and meet God for yourself and see the realities of eternal life and eternal death with your own eyes – as Paul experienced, and then come back to this life, how would your daily living change?
これらは重大な質問です。なぜなら何よりもこれらの質問はキリストを信じる者である私たちがこの地上でどのように生きるかを決めるからです。パウロが経験したように、もし今、永遠、つまり天国に行って、自分が神に会い、自分の目で永遠の命と永遠の死の現実を見て、この世にまた戻ってきたとしたら、あなたの日々の生活はどのように変わるでしょうか？
The reality of the return of Christ is central to Paul’s first letter (and second letter) to the Thessalonians. We’re looking at 1 Thessalonians today as we continue our seven year overview of the books of the Bible.
キリストの再臨の現実は、テサロニケ人へのパウロの最初の手紙（と第二の手紙）の中心となっています。私たちは聖書の書を7年かけて学んできていますが、今日は第一テサロニケ人への手紙を見てみましょう。
This morning I would like to look at five key points that Paul raises in this letter, some very briefly, others in more detail.
今朝はパウロがこの手紙であげている５つの要点を見ていきたいと思います。簡単に見ていく点と詳しく見ていく点があります。
- How to Witness
証しの仕方
Chapter 1 is a brief introduction/overview of the whole letter. It touches on true salvation, true faith, and the reality of a returning Christ. In chapter 2, Paul gives us a blueprint on how to witness, based on the realities of these three realities (salvation, faith, Christ’s return).
第1章はこの手紙全体の簡単な紹介/概要です。真の救い、真の信仰とキリストの再臨の現実について触れています。第２章では、パウロはこの３つの現実（救い、信仰、キリストの再臨）に基づいて、どのように証しをしたらいいか詳しく教えてくれます。
It’s virtually in point form for us to follow:
実質的に点形式になっています。
- Know the message: Our message is God’s good news
メッセージを知る：私たちのメッセージとは神の良い知らせのことです。 - Have pure motives: work to please God, not people
純真な動機を持つ：人ではなく神を喜ばせるために働く - Be of noble manner: you don’t need tricks, gimmicks or money; but rather have courage, gentleness, love and holiness
寛大にふるまう：芸当や仕掛け、お金など要りません。むしろ勇気、優しさ、愛、聖さをもつことです。
(Note, there is no mention of skill or gifting here. It’s not that these are irrelevant, but simply knowing the gospel and sharing it with a right heart is what counts.)
ここでは技能や賜物については触れていないことに注目してください。それらが無関係だということではなく、ただ福音を知り、それを正しい心で分かち合うということが大切なのです。
One more thing here. Witnessing goes beyond sharing the gospel in words. It involves sharing our lives with those we are reaching out to. People need to see our faith in action, not just hear it. The spirit of this is captured beautifully in 2:8:
ここでもう一つ。証しをするということは福音を言葉で語ること以上のことです。私たちが手を差し伸べている人たちと人生を分かち合うことも含みます。ただ聞くだけでなく、私たちの信仰に行いが伴っていることを人々は見る必要があります。このことが２章８節にうまく捉えられています。
- Timothy’s Encouraging Report
テモテの励みとなる報告
Paul and his friends were torn away from the young Thessalonian church prematurely because of persecution, and Paul was worried about how the new believers there were going in their faith without him. It turns out they were going very well. Why? We’re told why in chapter 1:5:
パウロたちはまだ幼いテサロニケの教会から迫害のため予定より早く引き離されました。そのためパウロは信者になったばかりの人たちが彼なしで信仰が成長しているのかどうか心配でした。でもうまくやっていることが分かりました。なぜでしょう？それは１章5節に書かれています。
This is true of our own faith. If our belief in Jesus, in His gospel, in His return, is merely academic or emotional or even social, it won’t last. We’ll become like the 2nd or 3rd seeds in the parable of the sower, which dry up when the heat of persecution comes, or get choked out by the worries and temptations of this world.
これは私たち自身の信仰にもいえることです。もしイエス、イエスの福音と再臨における私たちの信仰が単なる学問的、感情的なものであり、社交的でさえあるなら、それは長続きしません。種まきのたとえ話にでてく・る迫害の熱がやってくると枯れてしまう２番目の種、この世の心配事や誘惑によって根がはらない３番目の種のようになってしまいます。
We need to receive the gospel not only with words (which are important) but with power, with evidence of submission to the Holy Spirit, and with the deep conviction that transforms lives. If you receive the gospel like that, not only will your faith stand, but you will become a great encouragement to those around you.
言葉で福音を受け入れる（大切なことですが）だけではなく、力と聖霊への服従の証と福音が人生を変えることを信じる深い確信をもって福音を受け入れる必要があります。そのような福音を受け入れるなら、あなたの信仰が耐えられるだけでなく、周りの人にあなたは大きな励ましとなります。
- Living to Please God
神を喜ばせるために生きる
One of the most common questions I receive as a pastor is: ‘What is God’s will for my life?’ or ‘What is God’s will for me in this situation?’ I’ve taught on this before but let’s review it here. God may have a specific calling for you to be in a certain place or to follow a certain profession or even to do a certain ministry. You should seek Him in these things.
牧師として私がよく受ける問いの一つは、´私の人生における神の御心は何か’とか´この状況の中で私への神の御心は何か’という問いです。このことに関しては前に教えましたが、ここでまた復習してみましょう。神はあなたがある場所にいること、ある職に就くこと、又はあるミニストリーをすることに特別な召しを持っておられるかもしれません。そうであればそのことに関して神を求めるべきです。
But by far, when it comes to the will of God, when it comes to pleasing God, God is clearly much more interested in who you are than where you are; He is much more interested in how you do (things) than what you do; and He is much more interested in why you are (the way you are) than any title you have in ministry.
しかし、神の御心、神を喜ばせることとなれば、神はあなたがどこにいるかよりもあなたがどんな人であるかのほうに関心があり、あなたが何をするかよりも、あなたがどのようにするかのほうに関心があり、ミニストリーにおけるあなたのタイトルよりもなぜあなたがそのようであるのかに関心があるのです。
Paul explains what this means.
パウロはこのように説明しています。
God’s will for you is that you have a character that is holy – just like His. God’s will for our lifestyles is further explained in chapter 5:
神の御心は、あなたが神のように聖である品性をもっていることです。私たちの生き方への神の御心は、第５章にさらに説明されています。
- Jesus is Coming Back
イエスが戻ってこられる

Jesus’ return is the central teaching of Paul’s writing to the Thessalonians. In fact, every chapter of this book finishes on this point, and is the basis of the teaching to come in the following chapter. But it reaches its climax in chapter 4 when Paul, writes this:
イエス再臨はパウロがテサロニケ人に書いている教えの中心です。実際、この書のどの章もこの教えで終わっていて、次の章での教えの基本となっています。しかし、パウロはこのように書いて第４章の頂点に達しています。
This is our great hope. This is probably the main thing that distinguishes us from non-believers. Paul says,
これが私たちの大きな希望です。これはおそらく未信者と私たちの違いが分かる一番重要なことでしょう。パウロはこう言っています。
Have you ever been to the funeral of a non-Christian? There’s no hope beyond the grave.
When we come to Christ, His return is our great hope. When we face trials that seem too much for us to cope with, His return is our great hope. When we face death – ours or those we love – His return is our great hope.
未信者の葬儀に行ったことはありますか？死後の世界に希望はありません。キリストを知るようになれば、キリストの再臨が私たちの大きな希望です。耐えられないように思われる試練に直面する時、キリストの再臨が私たちの大きな希望です。自分の死、愛する人の死に直面する時、キリストの再臨は私たちの大きな希望です。
And this great hope brings me back to my original question: do you really believe it? If you do, then
そしてこの大きな希望が最初の質問に戻らせます：本当にそのことを信じていますか？もし信じているなら、
Now. Turn to those around you and encourage them with these words.
ではあなたの周りの人たちのほうを向いて、互いに励まし合いなさい。
- Final Instructions
最後の教え
Our belief in Jesus – His work on the cross, His current presence in our lives in the person of the Holy Spirit, and His Kingdom to come – affects the way we live now. Paul instructs us with regards to this in chapter 5. His teaching here is so concise and to the point, that it is pretty much a checklist for Christian living.
私たちがイエスを信じていること、イエスが十字架の上でなされたこと、聖霊となって今、私たちと共におられること、やがて来たる御国は私たちの今の生き方に影響を与えます。パウロは５章でこのことについて教えています。ここでの彼の教えはとても簡潔で的を得ていているので、まさにクリスチャンの生き方のチェックリストです。
Here it is:
- acknowledge those who work hard among you
あなたがたの間で労苦している人たちを認める - warn those who are idle and disruptive
気ままな者を戒める - encourage the disheartened
落胆している者を励ます - help the weak
弱い者を助ける - be patient with everyone
すべての人に対して寛容である - always strive to do what is good for each other
互いの間でいつも善を行うよう務める - rejoice always
いつも喜んでいる - pray continually
絶えず祈る - give thanks in all circumstances
すべての事について感謝する - do not quench the Spirit
聖霊を消さない - do not treat prophecies with contempt
預言をないがしろにしない - hold on to what is good
良いものを堅く守る - reject every kind of evil
あらゆる悪を避ける - greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.
すべての兄弟たちに聖なる口づけをもってあいさつする
I do believe this last one has a cultural bias, so for the sake of our international congregation, I’ve taken the liberty of interpreting it for the various nationalities so you know how to greet one another in a culturally acceptable, Christian way:
この最後の教えには文化的な偏見があると思いますが、私たちは国際的な集まりですから、いろんな国籍を持った人のために勝手に訳をさせてもらいました。これで文化的に受け入れられるクリスチャンの方法で互いにどのように挨拶をしたらいいかが分かるでしょう。
- For Americans: greet all God’s people with a holy side-hug.
アメリカ人なら、すべての兄弟たちに聖なる横からのハグをして挨拶する - For Canadians: greet all God’s people with a holy apology.
カナダ人なら、すべての兄弟たちに聖なる謝罪をもって挨拶する - For Japanese: greet all God’s people with a holy bow.
日本人なら、すべての兄弟たちに聖なるおじぎをして挨拶する - For Filipinos: greet all God’s people with a holy pagmamano.
フィリピン人なら、すべての兄弟たちに聖なるパグママノ をもって挨拶する - For Australians: greet all God’s people with a holy slap on the back.
オーストラリア人なら、すべての兄弟たちい聖なる背中を軽くたたく挨拶をする
Whichever expression you use, let’s greet one another as holy to the Lord.
どの表現を使おうとも、主に聖である者として互いに挨拶をしましょう。
This checklist for Christian living is really, really practical. I encourage you to print it out, pin it on your wall, run through it regularly, and delight in holding yourself to it.
このクリスチャンの生き方のチェックリストは本当に実用的です。プリントして、壁に貼り、定期的に実践し、しっかりと守っていくことに喜びを感じましょう。
Let’s review what we’ve learnt today.
今日、学んだことを復習してみましょう。
- Witness with knowledge of the gospel, pure motives and a noble manner.
福音の知識、純真な動機、寛大なふるまいをもって証しする - Submit to the Holy Spirit, ask Him to convict your heart and to work powerfully in you, so that you will stand in your faith, and encourage others.
聖霊に従い、聖霊が心に語り、あなたのうちに力強くはたらいてくださるよう頼みましょう。そうすればあなたは信仰に耐え、人を励ませます。 - Live to please God.
神を喜ばせるために生きる - Remember that Jesus is coming back. Believe this with all your heart and let it shape your life.
イエスが戻ってこられることを覚え、それを心から信じ、人生を築き上げてもらいましょう - Follow the checklist for Christian living and regularly run through it.
