Anger いかり

Today we conclude our series on the seven primary sins 7つのたいざい and their blessing counterparts どうとうのしゅくふく. We’ve been looking at this so that we can identify 見分ける sin in our lives and deal with かいけつする it. More so, remembering that sin is a perversion へんたい of what God made good, we’ve been looking at the blessing counterparts どうとうのしゅくふく of these sins so that we can not only avoid sin but live in blessing.

Today: Anger いかり

First, a few quotes:

i. Wrath makes him deaf. (All we can hear is the blood rushing around in our head!) −Henry VI Shakespeare

ii. Internet: I don’t need anger management, I need people to stop annoying me.

iii. Never go to bed angry. Stay up and fight. −Phyllis Diller

Before we look at what the Bible says about anger いかり, we need to consider that there is something fundamentally きほんてきに different about anger いかり from the other six sins we’ve looked. What is it?

The other sins are always sin. Anger can be righteous.

A. When anger is sin いかりが罪であるとき – or leads to sin. What the Bible says:

Proverbs
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. (Anger is temporary insanity – Proverbs しんげん 19:11)

Ephesians 4:26-27
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” 4:26いかることがあっても、罪をおかしてはならない。 When you give full vent to your anger いかりをことごとくあらわす, you’re inviting the devil in.

James
My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

My personal testimony. Something ‘snaps’, blood rushes to my head – the result けっか is never good.

This “vented anger” いかりをあらわす can cause real damage ひどいそんがい. There are things which are said which can never be unsaid. Things which the other person hears which can never be unheard. Things that are felt that might never be unfelt. So we need to be careful about venting our anger

So before we get onto righteous anger 正しいいかり, what does the Bible say about controlling our anger いかり?

i. Be slow to speak. Bite your lip. Walk away. Cool down. Don’t send the email you’ve just written in anger. Make time and space. (James ヤコブ 1:19)

ii. Take remedial action. If you have anger or a grievance against someone, God says he won’t even listen to you. Before you worship God, make amends with your brother. Then come back to church and worship God. (Mat 5:23,24)

iii. Get to the root of the problem. もんだいのげんいんをさがす “Anger is the fruit of rotten roots. One of the primary roots of anger stems from the family. Angry people come from angry families because they learn from their role models もはん and carry on the same behavior こうどう in their own lives, eventually passing it on to their children.” Joyce Meyer (Exodus しゅつエジプトき 20:5)

I’ve read that up to 90% of anger いかり is misplaced まちがった anger いかり. We get angry with John because of what Mary did or said to us (not what John did or said – that was just a trigger for the anger we already had).

If we have any sort of anger issues, we need to seek first the peace of God. The peace of God comes through a deepening knowledge of and relationship with God. It’s that simple. It’s not always that easy. But it’s that simple You have a deep and intimate relationship with God and you will know peace.

B. When anger is righteous.

Anger is righteous when it is directed toward sin.
We shouldn’t be getting angry when the cap is left off the toothpaste, or the dry cleaning is forgotten, or when someone has poor taste in fashion. We should be angry when we hear blasphemy, when we see filth in the media, when we become aware of injustice In fact, we should be angry when we come across any sort of wrongdoing 罪 – (Proverbs しんげん 6:16) – and this is what we have been identifying 見分ける in this series on the 7 primary sins 7つのたいざい.

Here’s a question: Do we get angry about the same things God does?

But here’s the key thing

We are to hate the sin, but love the sinner.

It’s a nice sound bite but showing people that we love them while we hate the sin in their lives is key to being Christlike and living a Christian life. It must be built on a foundation きそ of trust しんらい and demonstrable care じっしょうできる思いやり. It’s the difference between judgmentalism さばくこと and loving correction あいをこめてのいますこと.

This is hard even with ourselves. We must hate the sin within ourselves yet not succumb to self-loathing It can be tempting to beat ourselves up 自分をせめる sometimes over the sin in our lives. We are to be angry about the sin in our lives but hold on to the image of ourselves as children loved by God and love ourselves in that capacity.

Let’s finish by looking at God’s anger 神のいかり because this takes us to the heart 心・ちゅうしん of the gospel ふくいんのメッセージ.

Psalms しへん 7:11 God is a righteous judge, a God who expresses his wrath every day.

1 John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Propitiation なだめのそなえ者 is a key word じゅうような言葉 in Christianity. If English is not your native language and you don’t know this word, don’t worry, most native speakers don’t know this word.

Propitiation refers to the turning aside of God’s righteous anger by an offering. That’s what Jesus was on the cross. He was an offering ささげ者 poured out on our behalf.

Because God is a holy and righteous judge He cannot just let sin go unpunished It must be atoned for つぐなわれる. Jesus took upon Himself all the anger and indignation いかり that God righteously had from our sins. Because of what Jesus did on the cross, God’s righteous anger 正しいいかり has been turned away from us and

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.”

Let’s do all we can to get rid とりのぞく of all unrighteous anger 正しくないいかり and to live in the peace へいあん of God.

Pray.
