I’d like to say that I was absent last week because I was feeding the poor and destitute in remote villages of India [image]. But that would be a complete lie. The truth is I was staying in the presidential suite [image] of the Marriott hotel on the Gold Coast in Australia [image]. This was a very kind gift which enabled me and my three brothers to share some wonderful time together. We are very close and we love to share time together enjoying the sunshine [image], good conversation lounging by the pool [image], swimming in the pool [image], eating fabulous food [image], and watching absurdly loud car races [image]. Now, I’m not saying this to make anyone feel envious (well, maybe just a little bit). I’m actually saying this as a lead in to what God has to teach us in Colossians 1. 3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people— 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel 6 that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. 7 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant,[c] who is a faithful minister of Christ on our[d] behalf, 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.
9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you[f] to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us
from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Living a Life that People Thank God For
人が神に感謝する人生を生きる
After stating his own credentials (an apostle), his good company (Timothy), and the status of those he is writing to holy and faithful brothers and sisters Paul continues in verses 3,4 to say something that on the surface sounds rather ordinary but the more you think about it, the more extraordinary it gets: “We always thank God…when we pray for you”.
パウロは自分の信用（使徒）、良き仲間（テモテ）、そして彼が記す人々の立場－神聖で忠実 な兄弟姉妹－のことを述べたあとで、3、4節では、うわべでは普通に聞こえても考えるほどに 本質を得られるようなことが続きます。わたしたちは、いつもあなたがたのために祈り、 神に感謝している。
This leads us to ask ourselves, ‘Am I living a life that others would thank God for?’ This is not the same as asking ‘Am I a superstar of the faith’? But it’s asking ‘Am I living a life warts and all that others would thank God for?’ このことは私たちを”人が神に感謝するような人生を私は生きているだろうか？”という問いに 誘います。 この問いは「私は信仰のスーパースターですか」というのと同じではありません。「私は－良 いことも悪いこともひっくるめて－人が神に感謝するような人生を送っているだろうか」と問 うているのです。
The depth of this question stands out a little more when we look at it from a negative perspective: ネガティブな考え方をすると、この問いの深みがより浮き彫りになります。
Am I living a life that causes others grief?
Am I living a life that causes others to be discouraged? Am I living a life that causes others to doubt? and so on 人が悲しむような人生を生きているだろうか？ 人ががっかりするような人生を生きているだろうか？ 人が疑うような人生を生きているだろうか？
Paul explains what this life that others thank God for looks like (in v4). パウロは人が神に感謝するような人生がどんなものかを説明しています。（4節） “because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people” v4
これは、キリスト・イエスに対するあなたがたの信仰と、すべての聖徒に対していだい
ているあなたがたの愛とを、耳にしたからである。
So a life that others thank God for is 1. a life of faith in God, and 2. a life of love toward others. Both of these are demonstrable on a daily basis. 人が神に感謝する人生というのは、1.神に信仰をもっている人生、2．人を愛する人生です。 その両方は日々実証できるものです。
Intercessory Prayer For Whom?
とりなしの祈り－誰のために？
The next verses I’d like to particularly focus on are verses 6 and 9. (They are linked verses 7 & 8 are just detail.) 次に注目したい節は6と9節です。（これらは関連性があります－7と8章は単なる詳細です。）
The gospel [you are living] is bearing fruit and growing …For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. この福音は、実を結んで成長しているのである。。。そういうわけで、これらの事を耳にして 以来、わたしたちも絶えずあなたがたのために祈り求めている。
We have a growing intercessory prayer ministry. At the end of every service we have a time where anyone who would like any prayer at all is encouraged to come forward and spend time in prayer with our prayer ministers. 私たちのとりなしの祈りのミニストリーは成長しています。毎回礼拝の終わりに祈ってほしい ことがある方が前に来て祈りのミニストリーの人たちと一緒にお祈りをする機会が設けられて います。
We have a tendency to think that this is directed at people who have problems. Certainly this prayer time is there for people who are struggling with things in their life. But as we’ve looked at recently, it’s also for people who want to seek direction and for those who want to give thanks for what God has done and is doing in their lives. Today we are given another reason for intercessory prayer: continued growth. Here in Colossians 1 we read about how wonderfully the gospel is growing, and because of this, they can’t stop praying for them. これは問題をかかえている人に向けられていると思いがちです。確かに、この祈りの時間は人 生に悩みがある人のために向けられたものです。けれど最近は、自分の進むべき方向を探し求 めている人や人生の中で神がしてくれたことや今してくれていることに感謝の気持ちを表した い人にも向けられています。今日はとりなしの祈りをするもう一つの理由があるのです：それ は継続的成長です。コロサイ人への手紙1章で私たちはどれくらい福音が増大しているか、そし てこれにより祈ることをやめないということを見ました。
So let’s be sure to not only pray for those who are struggling, but those who are enjoying a time of fruitfulness and growth. なので、苦しんでいる人のためだけでなく、実りや成長を享受している人のためにもお祈りし ましょう。
Pleasing God
神を喜ばせる
Verses 9 and 10 say, “We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will … so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way”. (my italics) 9、10節では神の御旨を深く知り、、、主のみこころにかなった生活をして真に主を喜ば せ、、、と言っています。
Pleasing God is a big deal. It’s what discipleship, Christlikeness and Lordship are all about. 神を喜ばせることは大きなことです。弟子訓練、キリストのようになること、主に従うことが まさにそれです。
But what does pleasing God really look like? How do we know we’re really pleasing God?
しかし神を喜ばせるとはいったいどういうことでしょうか？私たちが本当に神を喜ばせている かなんてどうやって知るのでしょうか。
It’s tempting to jump right to the good ol’ Christian Wheel [image] to answer this question. Basically if we’re reading the Bible, praying, evangelising or in deep fellowship we’re safe. If we’re not actively doing one or more of these things, we’re on shaky ground. 古き良きものに飛び移るのは魅力的です、クリスチャンウィールはこの質問に答えました。 基本的に、聖書を読み、祈り、福音を説き、クリスチャンの仲間とともにいるなら、私たちは 安全です。これらのことを積極的にしなければ、私たちの信仰はぐらついたものになります。
No doubt these things can please God. But pleasing God involves much more (and in a sense much less) than this. And it’s worth pointing out that it’s quite possible to be reading the Bible or praying and displeasing God in the process. If God has called you to witness to someone but you decide to pray about it instead as a means of avoiding what God has called you to do you grieve the Holy Spirit and displease God. If you choose to go into your room and close the door and read your Bible at the only time in the week when the family are all together, you are most probably grieving the Holy Spirit and displeasing God. これらのことが神を喜ばせるのは言うまでもありません。しかし、神を喜ばせるというのは もっと多くのことを（ある意味もっと少ないことを）含みます。聖書を読み、祈っていてもい つの間にか神を喜ばせていないこともありえます。もし神があなたに、ある人のことを証言す るよう求めたのにあなたが祈ることを決めたのなら－神があなたにするよう命じたことを避け る手段として－あなたは聖霊と神を悲しませることになるでしょう。もしあなたが一週間のう ちの家族がみないるときにのみ部屋にこもって聖書を読むのであれば、これもまた聖霊と神を 悲しませることになるでしょう。
Some people on the other hand will say that pleasing God is very easy. It’s found in basically any activity (like gardening or photography or napping or cooking etc) that we ‘give to God’.
This certainly might be true in some respects but can get very shaky in others. Can I get drunk for the Lord? Can I gamble for the Lord? Can I drive my car for the Lord? Paddle my kayak for the Lord? Play rugby for the Lord? 一方、神を喜ばせることはとても簡単だという人もいるでしょう。神に対してする行為なら
（ガーデニング、写真、昼寝、料理など）基本的にはなんでもいいのです。 このことはいくつかの点では正しいかもしれませんが、他の点では当てはまらないこともあり ます。主のために酔っぱらってもいいですか。主のために賭け事をしてもいいですか。主のた めに車を運転してもいいですか。主のためにカヤックを漕いでもいいですか。主のためにラグ ビーをしてもいいですか。
So what does pleasing God look like?
さて、神を喜ばせるとはどういうものですか。
Paul explains it this way. He says in v10 that a life pleasing to God and a life worthy of God are synonymous. So if we’re not sure if we’re pleasing God then we can ask ourselves if what we are doing is worthy of Him and this might helps us answer the question.
パウロはこう説明します。10節で神に喜ばれる生活と神のみこころにかなった生活とは同じこ とですと言ってます。なのでもし私たちが神を喜ばせているかどうか確信が持てないのであれ ば、私たちがしていることが神に見合ったことなのか自分に問いかけたらよいのです、そして これが先ほどの質問の答えへと導くでしょう。
Paul also gives us a checklist so we can be sure about this very important topic: 私たちがこの非常に重要な題に確信を持てるようパウロはチェックリストを与えてくれていま す。
A life that pleases God will
bear fruit in every good work
grow in the knowledge of God
be strengthened with all power
give joyful thanks

● 喜びをもって感謝をささげる
In essence, pleasing God is not so much what we do but why we do it, how we do it and what fruit it produces. Let’s look at some examples. 要するに、神を喜ばせるということは、私たちが何をするかではなく、なぜそれをするか、ど のようにそれをするか、どんな実を結ぶかということです。いくつか例を見ていきましょう。
1. Can a guy please God by racing cars?
カーレースに出ることによって神を喜ばせることができますか？
This is the Jesus car [Image]. It’s driven by Andrew ‘Fishtail’ Fisher [Image]. Andrew is a Christian. Does he really please God by driving a very expensive racing car around a track at 250 km/h. Andrew doesn’t only do this. Last year alone, Andrew took his racing car and spoke to 50,000 students and prison inmates about the gospel of Jesus Christ. The other drivers know that Andrew is not just a guy with the word Jesus painted on his car. He has a message which he is not only not afraid to proclaim in big letters but to live out in his life. I believe Andrew Fisher gives enormous pleasure to God by doing what he loves to do race cars and do it in a way that bears fruit. これはイエスの車です。アンドリューフィッシュテールフィッシャーが運転します。アンド リューはクリスチャンです。アンドリューは高級車を使って時速250㎞でトラックを1周するこ とで神を本当に喜ばせるのでしょうか。これだけをしているのではありません。昨年だけで、 アンドリューはその車に乗って5万人もの学生と刑務所の囚人たちにイエスキリストの福音を説 きました。他のドライバーたちはアンドリューがただ車にイエスの言葉を書くだけの男だとは 思っていません。彼はあるメッセージを携えており、それをでっかい文字で宣言したり人生の 中でそれを実現することを恐れてはいません。アンドリューフィッシャーは彼がしたいことを することで、神に大きな喜びを与えています－カーレースで－そして実を結ぶ方法でそれをし ているのです。
Can a guy please God by being an obsessed Olympic athlete?
熱狂的オリンピック選手になることによって神を喜ばせることができますか？
He can if he’s Eric Liddell [Image]. Many of you might know Eric he is the famous Scot who ran in the 1924 Paris Olympic Games [Image] and was immortalised in the 1982 movie Chariots of Fire （炎のランナー）. He claimed to run for God and the proof was in the checklist that Paul provides. His running bore fruit he often spoke to crowds after his races and in churches about living for Jesus; he grew in the knowledge of God this caused him to refuse to run on Sundays; he was strengthened for his calling on the track (which we’ll see in a minute) and in his calling after athletics when he went to China as a missionary. And people gave thanks for his life. When he died in 1945 (just 43 years old), all of Scotland mourned. エリックリデルなら可能でしょう。みなさんの多くがエリックを知っているでしょう－彼は 1924年のパリオリンピックで走ったスコットランド人で、1982年の映画「炎のランナー」でそ の名が永遠に知られることとなりました。彼は神のために走ることを主張し、その証明はパウ ロのチェックリストの中にもあります。彼の走りは実を結びました－彼はレースの後や教会で 人々に向かってイエスのために生きることについて話をしました；彼は神を知り学んで成長し ました－これにより日曜日に走ることを拒みました；彼はトラックの上での使命と、中国に宣 教師として行ったあとの運動競技により強くなりました（後ほど確認します）。そして人々も 彼の人生に感謝を捧げました。 1945年に43歳の若さで亡くなったとき、スコットランド全土が悲しみに暮れました。
Can a guy please God playing rugby?
ラグビーをすることで神を喜ばせることができますか？
Some of us have been watching a lot of rugby over the last few weeks, watching these enormous men smash into one another and score some amazing tries. Does this please God? It does if you’re Kiwi Michael Jones [Image]. Michael Jones played until fairly recently in the professional era and he stands out for one amazing thing: his faith on and off the field. He, too, refused to play on Sunday because he believed as a Christian that that would not honour God. For any other rugby player, that would be rugby suicide. You would be dropped from the team and never be asked to play again. But not Michael Jones. God honoured him just as he honoured Eric Liddell and Michael played for New Zealand for over 10 years. CRU website: “Michael was a Christian, and New Zealand knew it. He was vocal about his faith, even refusing to play games on Sundays. I could give many, many more examples. But you don’t have to be famous to please God, you just need to be faithful. And that might involve the smallest things. But whatever we do whether it’s through core Christian disciplines like reading the Bible, or through hobbies and interests let’s try to please God by bearing fruit, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power, and giving joyful thanks. もっと多くの例を挙げられます。しかし、神を喜ばせるのに有名になる必要はありません。誠 実であればいいのです。それは小さいことも含みます。何をするにも－それが聖書を読むと いった基本的なことであっても、また趣味や興味にあっても－実を結び、神を知る知識を増し 加え、すべての力によって強くされ、喜びをもって感謝をささげることによって神を喜ばせる ようにしましょう。
It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, plain or glamorous, brilliant or simple; everyone needs God and is blessed by living a life that pleases Him. それはあなたがお金持ちであろうとなかろうと、魅力的であろうとなかろうと、優秀であろう となかろうと関係ありません；みなが神を必要としており、神を喜ばせる人生を歩むことによ り祝福を享受できます。
Let me finish quickly with verses 13 & 14. 13と14節で手早く言ってしめます。
13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
13 神は、わたしたちをやみの力から救い出して、その愛する御子の支配下に移して下
さった。
14 わたしたちは、この御子によってあがない、すなわち、罪のゆるしを受けているの
である。
These verses introduce us to dominions and kingdoms: the dominions of darkness and the Kingdom of God. One is inferior, the other is superior. One is primarily visible and the other primarily invisible. If we’re going to be “strengthened with all power”(v11) then we need to understand this and to live it out in our lives. This will be a theme that I plan to focus on for most of next year. これらの節は支配力と支配を紹介しています：やみの力と神の御国。一方は劣っており、他方 は優れています。一方は主に見えるが、他方は見えません。“すべての力によって強くされる”
（11節）のであれば、このことを理解し、実行する必要があります。これが私が来年、焦点を
