Ezekiel

It’s time for our monthly book-of-the-Bible message, and today we will look at the book of Ezekiel. We continue in the Old Testament, in the section known as the Major Prophets. Ezekiel is one of four Major Prophets, along with Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel.

Ezekiel was originally training to become a priest before receiving the call to be a prophet. He embraced the call as a prophet and ministered to the Jewish exiles in Babylon for about 22 years, from 593 BC to 571 BC.

The book of Ezekiel is divided into three major parts.
Part I: The Role of the Prophet (Chapters 1-3)
The work of the prophet was not an easy one. Prophets were entrusted with messages from God, and it was their duty to deliver the messages.

As if hearing and delivering God’s messages accurately weren’t difficult enough, what made it more difficult was the presence of many false prophets.

False prophets were notorious for telling people only what they wanted to hear. They cared more about being liked by people, so they would either sugarcoat a harsh message or blatantly change the message altogether.

Ezekiel was one prophet among many during his time, and he was the unpopular one. Nobody liked what he had to say, even though he spoke God’s messages truthfully. He was also instructed by God to do some strange things to convey the messages, things like lying on his side for over a year and baking bread over cow poo.
These strange actions further made him unpopular with the people, but to his credit, Ezekiel was faithful to God and in delivering his messages. One such message was the “watchman” message (Ezekiel 3:16-21):

16 At the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself. 20 “Again, when a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 21 But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.”

Ezekiel was called to be a watchman for the Jewish people. If there was trouble ahead for the people, it was Ezekiel’s responsibility to warn them.

And like Ezekiel, we have been entrusted with a message from God: the Gospel message. And like Ezekiel’s time, there is trouble ahead for the people today: our sin will eventually separate us from God.
I hope that this “watchman” message will inspire us to share the Gospel message that can save people from trouble ahead. It’s not our responsibility to save people, but it is our responsibility to share the message.

Next, the book of Ezekiel moves to its second major part.
Part II: The Message of Rebuke and Judgment (Chapters 4-32)
Half the book of Ezekiel is dedicated to detailing God’s rebuke and judgment, both for the Jews and for the surrounding enemy nations. Israel’s wickedness is exposed, namely idolatry.
Here’s an example from Ezekiel 6:1-7:
1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel; prophesy against them 3 and say: ‘You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places. 4 Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars will be smashed; and I will slay your people in front of your idols. 5 I will lay the dead bodies of the Israelites in front of their idols, and I will scatter your bones around your altars. 6 Wherever you live, the towns will be laid waste and the high places demolished, so that your altars will be laid waste and devastated, your idols smashed and ruined, your incense altars broken down, and what you have made wiped out. 7 Your people will fall slain among you, and you will know that I am the Lord.

God’s rebuke and judgment here sound very harsh, and we often mistake rebuke and judgment for baseless anger and impatient frustration. It is not so. God’s rebuke and judgment are actually synonymous with his patience and righteousness.

Israel had been sinning for centuries, and God persistently kept sending warning messages in hopes that Israel would repent. But God is also a holy and righteous God who ultimately judges right from wrong. These actions speak of God’s praiseworthy qualities of patience and righteousness. These are good things about God, not bad things.

So when correction and rebuke from God come our way, what is our response? It’s our fault. It’s our sinfulness. And yet, do we become defensive and make excuses? Worse still, do we blame God for being mean and uncaring?
I hope that we can learn to accept God’s correction and rebuke with humility and a repentant heart. Like parents disciplining their children, God corrects and rebukes us because he loves us. We, in turn, should accept God’s correction and rebuke, knowing that it’s for our good.

A small number of faithful Jews would ultimately accept God’s correction and rebuke with humility and a repentant heart, which the third and last major part of the book of Ezekiel prophesied.
Part III: The Glorious Future of Israel (Chapters 33-48)

After a lot of rebuking and judging, Ezekiel receives an encouraging message of God’s promise and unfailing love. Jerusalem would be restored. The land would be renewed. The nation would be resurrected. And worship would be reestablished.

Ezekiel receives from God the vision of “the valley of dry bones coming to life” (Ezekiel 37:1-6)
1 The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” 4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

God rebuked and judged, but he also never gave up on his people.

Even with the dryness and lifelessness of the hearts of the Jewish people, God had a promise and a plan for his people. This speaks of God’s faithfulness, and the Bible is full of the faithful promises of God.
Here are just a couple:

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

One thing is for certain:
God is faithful to his people who are faithful to him. It is not an indiscriminate, blanket coverage for everyone. God’s wish is that “none should perish” (2 Peter 3:9), and God’s desire is that everyone would fall under his covering of protection and blessing. But we have to do our part to fall in line with God’s wish and desire for us and respond to him.

Like the small number of faithful Jews who repented and, as a result, witnessed the fruition of the promise of restoration, I hope that we can faithfully respond to God. How can we faithfully respond to God? The key theme and verse of the book of Ezekiel will give us a good idea.

The key theme of the book of Ezekiel is “showing reverence for the name and glory of God.” This simply means “make God your first priority.” Remember, Israel was rebuked for their idolatry. Don’t commit present-day idolatry by prioritizing other things before your faith in God. Put God above your school, your job, your money, your boyfriend or girlfriend, your family, your children, your spouse, and yourself. Make God “Number 1” in your mind, in your heart, in your life.

And the key verse of the book of Ezekiel is:
You will know that I am the Lord. This verse occurs seventy times throughout the book of Ezekiel. Don’t call him “Lord” and not do what he says. If you’re going to pray “Lord,” or sing “Lord,” or go to church to meet the Lord, then make a commitment in your mind and heart that God is Lord, master, “oyakata” over your life.
That’s how we can faithfully respond to God, and surely God is faithful in his love and mercy for us.
Pray.
