Introduction
Does the name, Travis Tritt, ring a bell?
みなさん、トラヴィス・トリットという名前に聞き覚えはありますか？
Now he’s a famous Country singer, but before he made it big, Tritt spent years playing in small out-of-the-way bars and taverns. He said that (as you might expect) these were dangerous places. His fans were mostly drunks who had a hard time controlling their tempers. Thus… bar fights would break out, and even entertainers were in danger. How did he handle those risky crowds? He wrote:
現在、彼は有名なカントリーシンガーですが、有名になる前は、トリットは小さな町外れのバーや居酒屋で何年も演奏していました。バーや居酒屋は、みなさんの想像のとおり危険な場所だと、彼は言っています。当時の彼のファンはほとんどが酔っぱらいで、気性が荒く、聴衆をコントロールするのに苦労したそうです。そして、やはりバーでは喧嘩が日常茶飯で、芸能人でさえ危険にさらされていました。彼はそのような危険なファンたちに、どのように対応していたと思いますか？トリットは次のように書いています：
“Just when [bar fights] started getting out of hand, when bikers were reaching for their pool cues and rednecks were heading for the gun rack, I’d start playing, ‘Silent Night.’ It could be the middle of July — I didn’t care. Sometimes they’d even start crying, standing there watching me sweat and play Christmas carols.”
「ある日、バーでの喧嘩が手に負えなくなり、バイカー達はビリヤードのキューという玉突き棒を手に持ち構え、喧嘩相手の田舎の労働者達は棚から銃を手に取ろうとしていました。そこで私は、 『サイレントナイト』を演奏し始めました。それはクリスマスでもない時期外れな7月の中旬だったと思いますが、私は気にせずサイレントナイトを演奏し続けました。すると、喧嘩をしていた彼らは立ち止まり、泣き出し、クリスマスキャロルを汗を流しながら演奏している私をじっと見つめていたのでした。」
The singing of a few Christmas carols brought peace to a bunch of drunken men in a tavern. And you know, Christmas carols can do that, because the original carol promised exactly that: “Peace to men.”
このようにクリスマスの賛美歌は、居酒屋で酔っ払った男達の心に平和をもたらしました。クリスマスキャロル、クリスマスの賛美歌はそのように人々に働くのです。そもそも、クリスマスキャロルには：「Peace to men /人々に平和を」と言う賛美歌があるように、そのような力があるのです。
Luke 2:14 tells us the angels sang a carol over 2000 years ago. And that carol declared: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”
「いと高きところでは、神に栄光があるように、地の上では、み心にかなう人々に平和があるように」。（ルカによる福音書2:14）
“Peace to men” – that was the promise of that first carol. And without God’s peace, the world can be a very violent place. Likewise, in the birth of Jesus, the power of God was on parade before the eyes of men.
「Peace to men /人々に平和を」-それが、最初のクリスマスの賛美歌が歌っていることでした。そして、神の平和がなければ、世界は非常に暴力的な場所になってしまう可能性があります。同様に、イエスが誕生したことによって、神の力は人々の目の前で次々に見せられることになります。これから神の三つの力についてお話しします。まず、「神の恵みの力」についてお話しします。
- The power of God’s grace – verses 8-12
In those days, shepherds were considered to be at the lowest rung of the social ladder. Their work not only kept them away from the temple and the synagogue, but it made them ceremonially unclean. Yet in His grace, God gave the first announcement of the Savior’s birth to lowly shepherds!
当時、羊飼いは社会的には最も下の身分だと考えられていました。彼らの羊飼いという仕事内容自体がゆえに神殿や会堂から遠ざけられ、さらには儀式的にも汚れたものとされてしまいました。しかし、神の恵みにより、神は救い主の誕生を、低き身分の羊飼に最初に告げられました！
Mary’s song is true.
Yes, it’s a fact that shepherds were outcast by society as vile and filthy; outcast by religion as defiled and unfit to worship. However, they were chosen by Almighty God to hear the first birth announcement.
当時は、羊飼いが下劣で不潔なものとして社会から追放されたという事実がありました。羊飼い達は、汚れており、礼拝にふさわしくない者達と宗教的にも追放されていました。しかし、彼らは、全能の神によって救い主の最初の誕生の発表を聞くにふさわしい者として選ばれました。
How appropriate that the very men who raised the lambs for the Temple sacrifices were the first to meet the Lamb of God! God came there first because of pure grace.
神殿の犠牲のために子羊を育てた、まさにその人たちが、「神の子羊」に最初に会ったというのは、なんと似つかわしいことではありませんか！神は、純粋に「恵み」として最初にそこに来られました。すなわち誕生されたのです。
It’s His grace that brought the Son of God to come in human flesh. It’s His grace that reaches down to each one of us. It’s His grace that brings us salvation that we have not earned nor merited, “so that none of us can boast.”
神の御子が人間の体を形取られたのは「恵み」です。神の恵みは私たち一人一人に届くのです。神の恵み は「救い」をもたらしてくれます。でも、その救いは「私たちの誰もが自慢できないように」私たちが獲得したり、価値をつけたりすることはできないのです。
When I think of God’s grace in operation in our lives, it should make us humble. It should make us want to reach out to others without prejudice, without favoritism, without an air of superiority. It reaches out even to the most undeserving.
人生の中での神の恵みを考えると、私たちは謙虚になるはずです。神の恵みは、私たちが偏見なく、好意的に、優越感なしに他の人に手を差し伸べることを望みます。神の恵みは到底ふさわしくない人にも与えられます。

The power of God’s glory – verses 13-14
次に、「神の栄光の力」についてお話しします。
The “great choir” of angels proclaimed the glory of the Lord. Actually, Luke’s Gospel is filled with praise (1:64; 2:13, 28; 5:25-26; 7:16; 13:13; 17:15, 18; 18:43; 19:37; 23:47; 24:53).
天使たちの「偉大な聖歌隊」は主の栄光を伝えました。実際、ルカの福音書は賞賛に満ちています。（1:64; 2:13, 28; 5:25-26; 7:16; 13:13; 17:15, 18; 18:43; 19:37; 23:47; 24:53を参照してください。）
This multitude of the heavenly host had just now descended from on high, to honor the new-born Prince of peace.
おびただしい天の軍勢が、生まれたばかりの平和の王子を称えるために、天という高いところから降りてきたのでした。それは次の二つのことを伝えるためでした。
To give His parents the fullest conviction of His glory and excellence; and, To teach the shepherds, who were about to be the first proclaimers of the Gospel, what to think and what to speak of Him, who, while He appeared as a helpless infant, was the object of worship to the angels of God.
一つ目は、.生まれた子の両親にその子の栄光といかに卓越した力を持つ子であるかを教えるためでした。 そして、2つ目は、天使たちにとって崇拝すべき神の子が無力な人間の幼児として現れた時、福音を最初に宣べ伝えるべき羊飼い達が、どう考え、他の人々にどのように伝えるべきかを教えるためでした。
“Glory to God in the highest heaven” (v.14) – The design of God, in the birth of Jesus, was to manifest the hidden glories of His nature, and to reconcile men to each other and to Himself. The angels therefore declare that this incarnation shall manifest and promote the glory of God.
「いと高きところでは、神に栄光があるように（１４節）」という意味についてお話しします。
神の計画は、イエスの誕生によって、神の栄光を明らかにし、人を互いに和解させ、そして神と人を和解させることが目的でした。そして、天使たちは、この御子の誕生によって、神の栄光を大いに伝えています。
These things the angels desire to look into. They were curious about what God is doing.
天使たちは神が何をするのかに興味がありましたし、人々も知りたいと思っていました。
The incarnation of Jesus Christ has an infinite and eternal benefit. Heaven and earth both partake of the fruits of it, and through it, angels and men become one family (Ephesians 3:15).
天上にあり地上にあって「父」と呼ばれているあらゆるものの源なる父に祈る。（エペソ人への手紙 3:15）
“And on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” – Men are in a state of hostility with Heaven and with each other. The carnal mind is enmity against God. He who sins wars against his Maker.
「地の上では、み心にかなう人々に平和があるように」という節について説明します。
人は天国と互いに敵対した状態にあります。それはどのようなことかというと、この世では、罪深い人間たちが、自分を造ってくださった創造主である神と戦っているような状態になっているのです。
When we become reconciled to God, through the death of His Son, we learn to love one another. We know we have peace with God; peace in our own consciences; and peace with our neighbors: God’s favor dwells among us.
しかし、神の御子の死を通して、神と和解すると、私たちはお互いを愛することを学びます。私たちは神がいること、平和があることを知るようになります。私たち自身の良心の平安、そして隣人との平和、私たちには神の恵みが宿っていることがわかるようになります。

The power of God’s gift
最後に「神の賜物の力」についてお話しします。
The shepherds came and worshipped the baby and were forever changed by their meeting with Jesus. They came out of curiosity and left rejoicing in the glory of eternal life. They came wondering what they would find, and they left witnessing about the One who had found them. The power of God in changing lives is glorious.
羊飼い達はやって来て、赤ん坊を崇拝し、イエスとの出会いによって彼らは永遠に変えられました。彼らは初めは好奇心からやって来ましたが、永遠の命の栄光という喜びを得ることができました。彼らは何があるのだろうかと物見高い気持ちで来ましたが、逆に羊飼いを見つけてくださった方である神のことを伝えることができました。 このように私達の人生を変える神の力は輝かしいものです。
The first human ambassadors of the Gospel were humble shepherds who hastened to see the Baby and then told everybody what they had seen and heard.
福音の伝道大使となった最初の人間は、謙虚な羊飼いでした。彼らは赤ん坊を早く見たがり、そして彼らが見たり聞いたりしたことをみんなに話しました。
The original verb for “found” in verse 16 means “to find after a search.” The Magi had a star to guide them (Matthew 2), but all the shepherds had was the sign given them by the angel (v.12). The shepherds, like the angels before them, glorified and praised God (v.20).
１６節に書かれている「探した」という意味は、「散々探して、探しあてた」という意味です。東方の三博士は星に導かれました。しかし、羊飼い達は天使から「しるし」と言われただけです。それでも羊飼いは天使達のように、神の栄光を称賛したのです。
J.B. Phillips paraphrases Ephesians 1:19-20, “How tremendous is the power available to us who believe in God.” When we make firm our connection with God, his life and power flow through us.,br4:
聖書学者で、翻訳者、著者、聖職者でもあるジョン・バートラム・フィリップスは次のようにエペソ人への手紙１９、２０節を要約しています。「神の力は、わたしたち信じる者にとって絶大なものである」とJBフィリップスは言っています。私たちが神と強い絆を築いた時、神の力が私たちの中に流れ込むのです。
Conclusion
In December 1903, after many attempts, the Wright brothers were successful in getting their “flying machine” off the ground. Thrilled, they telegraphed this message to their sister Katherine: “We have actually flown 120 feet. Will be home for Christmas.”
1903年12月、多くの試みの後、ライト兄弟は「フライングマシン」を地上から離陸させることに成功しました。彼らは大喜びで次のようなメッセージを姉妹のキャサリンに電報で伝えました。「僕たちは、実際に120フィート飛べました。これでクリスマスは家で過ごすことができます。」
Katherine hurried to the editor of the local newspaper and showed him the message. He glanced at it and said, “How nice. The boys will be home for Christmas.” He totally missed the big news–man had flown!
キャサリンは地元の新聞の編集者に大急ぎでメッセージを見せました。編集者はそのメッセージを見て、「なんて素敵なニュースだ。彼らはクリスマスには家に帰れるんだね！」と言いました。その編集者は肝心なビッグニュースを見逃していました。人類が空を飛んだというビッグニュースを完全に見過ごしてしまったのでした！
If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator; If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist; If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist; If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer; But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us the Gift of a Savior. Let’s not miss that big news, the true powerful message of Christmas!
もし私たちに一番必要なものが情報であったなら、神は私たちに「教育者」を送ったでしょう。私たちが最も必要としているものがテクノロジーだったら、神は私たちに「科学者」を送ったでしょう。もし私たちの最も必要なものがお金だったら、神は「経済学者」を送ってくれたでしょう。私たちが最も必要としているものが楽しさだったら、神は私たちに「芸能人」を送ったでしょう。しかし、私たちに最も必要なものは赦しだったので、神は私たちに「救い主」という贈り物を送られました。それがビッグニュースです。クリスマスの真実であり、クリスマスの力強いメッセージを見逃さないようにしてください！
