ハガイ書

A couple of months ago, Peacock supermarket started putting up very angry-looking signs saying that people were not to park their cars there for long periods of time.
数ヶ月前、ピーコックスーパーが長時間の駐車はお断りと書いたひどく憤慨しているような貼紙を貼りました。
We went into overdrive trying to overcome the problem.
この問題を何とかしようとして私たちは大騒ぎしました。
We approached other businesses with carparks.
駐車場を持っている他の店をいくつか当たってみました。
We looked at other car parks areas.
他に駐車場はないか探してみました。
We spoke to the real estate agent about renting spaces some distance from here.
ここから少し離れた土地を借りれるかどうか不動産に聞いてみました。
We were starting to get a bit panicky.
だんだんパニックに陥ってきました。
After all, the signs didn’t look good.
あの貼紙はどうみても好ましいものではありませんでした。

Then someone got the bright idea that maybe we should just go and talk to the people at Peacock, tell them what we’re doing and ask if we can park on the second floor if we all do some shopping there.
そんな時、ある人が名案を思いつきました。ピーコックスーパーの人に私たちが教会で何をしているか話し、スーパーで買い物をすれば２階の駐車場に停めてもいいかどうか聞いてみようというのです。
The Peacock people explained that those angry-looking signs were not actually for us, and that they were very glad for us to park there and do our shopping.
スーパーの人たちはあの貼紙は私たちに向けて書いたのではないと言い、買い物をしてくれるならどうぞ駐車してくださいと言ってくれました。
Though the signs appeared very clear to us, we had misunderstood them.
貼紙がてっきり私たちに向けて書かれたものだと思っていましたが、実はそうではなかったのです。

This illustrates a common truth in our lives as Christians:
これは私たちクリスチャンによくある現実を描いています。
often the only hurdles we face are those that we put up ourselves based on wrong expectations or misplaced fears.
間違った期待や根拠のない恐れに基づいて自分自身で作り上げてしまった困難に直面していることがしばしばあるということです。

Introduction

Today we are continuing our march through the Bible and we come to the book of Haggai [image] which is the tenth of the twelve minor prophets and so the third last book of the Old Testament.
私たちは聖書を通して学び続けていきますが、今日は12の小預言者の中で10番目、旧約聖書の最後から3番目のハガイ書をみていきます。
After Obadiah, Haggai is the shortest book in the Bible but, like all the other books, it’s there for a very good reason: it is the Word of God.
オバデヤ書の次に短い書ですが、他の書と同じように最もな理由があって書かれたものであり、神の御言葉です。

Haggai prophesied toward the end of the period of exile when the Jewish remnant (about 50,000 people) had returned to Israel and were living under the rule of Darius the Great of Persia [image].
ハガイはユダヤ人の残された約50000人の者たちがイスラエルに戻っていた追放期間の後期に預言しており、ペルシアのダリヨス王の支配の下に生きていました。
A little earlier [image], Cyrus, the previous king of Persia, had ordered the Jews to rebuild their temple in Jerusalem [image].
ペルシアの前の王、クロス王はユダヤ人にエルサレムに宮を再建するよう命じました。
But because of local opposition – both real and perceived – the Jews had given up on rebuilding the temple of the Lord [image].
しかし地域の人々が反対したため、ユダヤ人は主の宮を再建するのをあきらめました。
The new king Darius however, wanted to see the religions under his rule flourish and so the prophets Haggai and Zechariah got busy encouraging the Jews to work on the temple [image].
しかし新しい王、ダリウスは自分の支配下で宗教が栄えるのを見たかったため、預言者ハガイとザカリヤはユダヤ人に宮の再建に取り組むよう促しました。

What’s important to note here as we look at the message of Haggai is that, not unlike our misunderstanding of the signs in the car park, the Jews had misunderstood the signs of their times and they themselves were actually more to blame for their inactivity than their opponents. Understanding this leads to three key teachings from the book of Haggai.
ハガイのメッセージを見て気づいておきたい重要なことは、駐車の貼紙を誤解していた私たちとは違って、ユダヤ人は自分たちの時代のしるしを誤解し、敵に対してというよりも自分たちが活動的に行動を起こしていないことに責任があったのです。このことは、ハガイ書からの3つの重要な教えにつながっていきます。

ハガイ書からの重要な教えの一つ目は
1. There are consequences for disobedience
不従順がもたらす結果というものがある ということです。

This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” Haggai 1:5,6
それで今、万軍の主はこう言われる、あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい。
あなたがたは多くまいても、取入れは少なく、食べても、飽きることはない。飲んでも、満たされない。着ても、暖まらない。賃銀を得ても、これを破れた袋に入れているようなものである。 ハガイ書1:5,6

This is a message for the church today.
これは今日の教会へのメッセージです。
To become lukewarm is to become disobedient. To become disobedient is to lose God’s favour. なまぬるくなるということは、不従順になるということです。不従順になるということは、神の支持を失うということです。神によく思われなくなるということです。
Just as the Jews of Haggai’s time were given a mission to rebuild the temple, so we today have been given a mission to build the church of Christ and take the gospel into all the world.
ハガイの時代のユダヤ人に宮を再建するという使命が与えられたように、私たちもキリストの教会を建て、福音を世界に伝えるという使命が与えられているのです。
To shy away from that mission because of what seems to be angry-looking signs is to be disobedient.
怒っているような印が見られるからといってその使命を避けるということは、不従順であるということです。

But the message of Haggai isn’t just a reminder that there are consequences of disobedience. しかしハガイのメッセージは、不従順がもたらす結果があるということを思い出させるだけではありません。
It’s a reminder that obedience to God brings encouragement and strength.
神に従うということは、励ましと力をもたらすということを思い出させてくれます。
This teaching is throughout the Bible:
この教えは聖書のあらゆるところに書かれています。

Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4
主によって喜びをなせ。主はあなたの心の願いをかなえられる。詩篇37:4
Seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33
まず神の国と神の義とを求めなさい。そうすれば、これらのものは、すべて添えて与えられるであろう。マタイによる福音書6:33
God rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6
（神は）ご自分を求める者に報いて下さること。ヘブライ人への手紙11:6

There is a call here away from timidity and inactivity – which is disobedience – and to boldness and activity – which is obedience.
臆病になること、行動を起こさないことは不従順であり、大胆になり、行動を起こすことは従順です。

There is a particular phrase that Haggai repeats numerous times throughout his book.
ハガイがこの書の中で何度も繰り返している言葉があります。
He says, “Give careful thought to your ways.”
あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい。
He repeats this for a reason.
彼には理由があって繰り返しているのです。
It’s easy for our thinking to become casual and our minds to become distracted.
私たちの考えがうわべだけのものになったり、私たちの思いがほかの事に気を取られてしまうことはよくあります。
“Give careful thought to your ways.”
“あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい”

Sloth is often thought of as just being lazy but it’s more than that.
怠惰はただの怠け者だと思われがちですが、もっと意味があります。
It involves not focussing on what we should be focussing on.
怠惰には重視すべきことに重視していないという意味もあります。
Sloth allows for easy distraction – even being distracted by good works.
怠惰になるということは何にでも簡単に気を取られてしまうということです。良いことにさえも気を取られてしまいます。
If God is calling us to take the gospel into all the world and our response is to paint the church because it could do with a fresh coat, then that hard work is nothing more than sloth – a distraction to take our minds and hearts away from the real work.
神が福音を全世界に伝えるよう私たちを召しているのに、私たちの示した反応が教会のペンキがはがれてきたからペンキを塗ることだけだったら、そんな重労働は怠惰でしかありませんし、私たちの心と思いを本当のはたらきから遠ざけてしまう邪魔にしかなりません。

“Give careful thought to your ways.” “あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい”
This means we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be distracted or intimidated by what’s around us.
これは周りのことに気を取られたり、おじけづいたりしてはいけないという意味です。
Don’t be misled by some of the signs.
サインに惑わされてはいけません。
When Joshua was leading the Jews into the Promised Land, the word of God was this:
ジョシュアがユダヤ人を約束の地に導いていたときの神の言葉はこうでした：

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:7-9
ただ強く、また雄々しくあって、わたしのしもべモーセがあなたに命じた律法をことごとく守って行い、これを離れて右にも左にも曲ってはならない。それはすべてあなたが行くところで、勝利を得るためである。
この律法の書をあなたの口から離すことなく、昼も夜もそれを思い、そのうちにしるされていることを、ことごとく守って行わなければならない。そうするならば、あなたの道は栄え、あなたは勝利を得るであろう。
わたしはあなたに命じたではないか。強く、また雄々しくあれ。あなたがどこへ行くにも、あなたの神、主が共におられるゆえ、恐れてはならない、おののいてはならない」。ヨシュア記1:7-9

After His resurrection but before His ascension, Jesus gave this word:
復活されて、昇天される前、イエスはこう言いました：

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Matthew 28:19,20
それゆえに、あなたがたは行って、すべての国民を弟子として、父と子と聖霊との名によって、彼らにバプテスマを施し、あなたがたに命じておいたいっさいのことを守るように教えよ。見よ、わたしは世の終りまで、いつもあなたがたと共にいるのである」。
マタイによる福音書28:19,20

It’s a similar message, isn’t it? The fruit of obedience is God’s presence; God filling the church with His presence. This leads us to our second point:
よく似たメッセージですよね？神に従うところに神はおられます。神はご自分のご臨在で教会を満たしてくださいます。これは次の要点につながります。

ハガイ書からの重要な教えの二つ目は
2. Prioritise God’s house
神の家を優先する ということです。

“You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house.” Haggai 1:9
あなたがたは多くを望んだが、見よ、それは少なかった。あなたがたが家に持ってきたとき、わたしはそれを吹き払った。これは何ゆえであるかと、万軍の主は言われる。これはわたしの家が荒れはてているのに、あなたがたは、おのおの自分の家の事だけに、忙しくしている。 ハガイ書1:9

Prioritising God’s house – the body of Christ – is a challenging message for a modern world which prioritises self.
神の家、つまりキリストの体である教会を優先するということは、自己を優先する現代世界には難しいメッセージです。
What are your plans for Easter?
イースターの計画はどのように立てていますか？
Are you fitting the church’s plans around your plans or are you fitting your plans around the church’s plans?
教会の計画を自分の計画にあわせていますか？それとも自分の計画を教会の計画にあわせていますか？
How are you going to prioritise this?
これをどのように優先させますか？
What are your plans for Golden Week?
ゴールデンウィークの計画はどのように立てていますか？
Our church is planning a big outreach to the community in Golden Week and we need volunteers.
私たちの教会はゴールデンウィークに大きなアウトリーチを計画しているので、ボランティアを必要としています。
How are you going to prioritise this?
これをどのように優先させますか？

(We can take this teaching to an extreme where we neglect our own families for the sake of the church.
このような教えを、「教会のために私たち自身の家族をほったらかしにしても良い」という極端な考え方に取ることもできます。
This is a misunderstanding of the teaching and is wrong.
それはこの教えを誤解していて、間違っています。
We must take loving care of our families as a priority but this must never lead to neglect of the church and it must certainly never be given priority over a specific call of God in our lives.)
私たちは家族を優先して大切にするべきですが、それが教会をおろそかにすることにつながってはいけませんし、あなたに与えられた特別な神の召しよりも教会を優先する必要はありません。

So “give careful thought to your ways.”
だから“あなたがたは自分のなすべきことをよく考えるがよい”
How will you prioritise Sunday mornings?
日曜日の朝をどのように優先させますか？
How will you prioritise Bible study evenings?
聖書の学びがある夜をどのように優先させますか？
How will you prioritise the Easter outreach?
復活祭のアウトリーチをどのように優先させますか？
How will you prioritise the Golden Week outreach?
ゴールデンウィークのアウトリーチをどのように優先させますか？

I want to encourage you to pray through these questions.
これらの質問の答えを祈り、考えてみてください。
I want to encourage you to seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness because there is blessing for obedience. 神の国とその義をまず求めてください。なぜなら従うことに祝福があるからです。
God promises to honour those who honour Him and He will reward those who put Him first with the true desires of their hearts.
神はご自分を敬う者を敬うと約束し、神を第一としたいと心から願う者に報いてくださいます。
Trust God with your time.
あなたの時間を神にゆだねなさい。

ハガイ書からの重要な教えの三つ目は
3. Don’t compare the works of God
神のはたらきを比べない ということです。

Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory [the Jerusalem temple before the exile]? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing? Haggai 2:3
あなたがた残りの者のうち、以前の栄光に輝く主の家を見た者はだれか。あなたがたは今、この状態をどう思うか。これはあなたがたの目には、無にひとしいではないか。ハガイ書2:3

There is a temptation – I’m speaking to older Christians here – to look at the current works of God and think as the elders did in Haggai’s day,
ここにいる年配のクリスチャンにむかって言いますが、神が今なさっているはたらきを見て、ハガイの時代の年老いた者たちと同じようについ考えてしまいがちです。それはどんな考えかというと、
“This is nothing like the revival I saw in my day.”“
これは私が見てきたリバイバルのようではない”
“Back in my country we had hundreds come forward for altar calls.”“
私の国では招きのときに何百人もの人が前に出てきた”
“This is nothing like Pentecost.”
“これはペンテコスト過ぎ越しの祝い のようではない”

Listen to God’s response:神の答えに耳を傾けましょう。

“This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations [the Messiah] will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord Almighty….‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the Lord Almighty.” Haggai 2:6,7,9
万軍の主はこう言われる、しばらくして、いま一度、わたしは天と、地と、海と、かわいた地とを震う。
わたしはまた万国民を震う。万国民の財宝は、はいって来て、わたしは栄光をこの家に満たすと、万軍の主は言われる。
主の家の後の栄光は、前の栄光よりも大きいと、万軍の主は言われる。わたしはこの所に繁栄を与えると、万軍の主は言われる』」。 ハガイ書2:6,7,9

Let’s pray for this. Let’s work faithfully toward it.
こうなるように祈りましょう。それに向かって誠実に取り組んでいきましょう。
And let’s see God respond to our obedience.
そして神が私たちの従順さに答えてくださるのを見ましょう。
