Happy Easter

Customs and the Cross

Happy Easter, everyone!

My job today is to tell you all about Easter; to explain to you what Easter is all about. To help me do this, I’m not going to refer to the apostle Paul or the apostle Peter or the apostle John. I’m going to refer to Johnny Depp. Without him knowing it at all, he has demonstrated very well what the Easter message is all about.

Last year, he and his then-wife Amber Heard tried to smuggle their two dogs, Pistol and Boo into Australia. He was caught by customs and the Australian government threatened to throw him out of the country, fine him and even put his dogs down (kill his dogs). You see, Australia has very strict quarantine laws to protect the country’s pristine environment.

Johnny then posted a weird apology video online that made everyone laugh.
He then went on the U.S. talk show circuit and angered every single Australian by complaining about his treatment and mocking Australia’s laws because, he said, his dogs were cute and cuddly and wouldn’t hurt a fly.

He completely missed the point.

It was never about his dogs’ appearance or temperament or behaviour. It’s about the diseases that they might be carrying. That’s why when you go to Australia, you’re often not allowed to take animals or things like ramen or wooden carvings into the country. They might be carrying germs which are harmful to the Australian ecosystem. Unless you’ve been through quarantine and been declared clean, then you’re unclean and you can’t get in.

And this is pretty much what Easter is all about.

One topic that Jesus taught about more about than anything else was the Kingdom of God. He taught that the Kingdom of God is very different from the Kingdom of this world. The Kingdom of God is spiritual, the kingdom of this world is physical. The Kingdom of God is holy, the kingdom of this world is corrupt. The Kingdom of God is greater, the kingdom of the world is lesser. And the Kingdom of God is not just a paradise you go to when you die, but is the presence and power and love of God which can enter our lives here and now if we’re willing.

Many people think about entering God’s kingdom in much the same way that Johnny Depp thought about taking his dogs into Australia.

Some people think that if they’re cute and cuddly and wouldn’t hurt a fly, then God will allow them into His kingdom. But that’s to completely miss the point. It’s all about being clean and righteous.

Some people think that they’re already clean and righteous and their lives are good enough so God will allow them to enter His kingdom. That’s what Johnny thought about his dogs. But again that’s to completely miss the point. You see, our standards of cleanliness are irrelevant. If we want to enter the Kingdom of God, we must do it on God’s standards.

By the way, on the other hand, some people feel that they are big and ugly or dark and dirty and they could never enter the kingdom of God. Some people have a very negative view of themselves and feel certain that God would never be interested in or could never love a person like them. Wrong again! Because entering the kingdom of God is a work of God, not a work of men.

Now, an important question at this point is: how do I know if I’m clean or unclean before God?
When you’re standing in line at customs, this question should also be going through your mind. Am I carrying anything in my baggage that will keep me from entering this country? In the same way, when it comes to entering God’s Kingdom we need to ask, is there anything in my ‘life baggage’ that is keeping me from entering this paradise, this Kingdom of God?

How do we know if we’re unclean?
Well, there’s good news here and there’s bad news.
Good news: The Bible tells us.
Bad news: everybody is unclean. Everybody.
Everybody has sinned. Everyone is guilty of lying, stealing, gossipping, being selfish, not honouring their parents, not loving others as they love themselves and not loving God with all their hearts and so on and so on. Everybody.

The Bible declares that
“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”
Romans 3:10-12

So that looks pretty gloomy. By this standard, no-one enters the Kingdom of God. Everyone is separated from God and lost in their sin.
But God loves people too much to allow that to happen. So He provided a way. And that is what Easter is all about.
The apostle Paul explains it this way:
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8
At Easter time, the sinless Jesus died in the place of sinful man to take away our sin and make us right with God.
The apostle Peter puts it this way:
Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 1 Peter 3:18
This is what we celebrate and embrace at Easter.
The death of Jesus removes our sin. The resurrection of Jesus brings us new life in the Spirit and access into the Kingdom of God.
But there’s a catch! You see, you can’t buy forgiveness for your sins with money because they’ve already been paid for. You can’t earn righteousness from God by doing good things because righteousness is a gift of grace. You can’t win your way or luck your way into the Kingdom of God because it’s not winnable and it’s got nothing to do with luck.

With His death and resurrection, Jesus made a way for us to be right with God. But how do we access this way to God, in real terms, in our lives? How do we access and receive the Kingdom of God in our lives today?
There was a man. A long time ago there was a great man. He was a very learned, very clever and highly respected man. His name was Nicodemus. He was one of the leading Jewish priests in his day. He came to Jesus at night because he was too embarrassed to approach Jesus during the day. Picture it: the great and esteemed scholar-priest approaching Jesus the carpenter to find out about God. That’s like a world renowned mathematics professor approaching one of his new students to ask him how to solve a maths problem.

But Nicodemus knew that Jesus was the real deal. He said, “I know that you’re from God because no-one could perform the miracles you do unless he were from God.”
And then he asked the big question: “How can I enter the Kingdom of God?”
Jesus answer must have been a huge disappointment and shock to him. He said, “You can’t.”
Jesus said, “No-one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
If you don’t understand what Jesus meant, don’t worry, neither did the great Nicodemus.
Jesus explained further: “No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”
That is, no-one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are baptised in water and baptised in the Holy Spirit. That’s how we enter and receive the Kingdom of God in our lives.
There’s so much more I’d like to explain about this but we don’t have time today, so I would like to invite you to come and speak with me more about this after the service, or come back next week when I will speak more about it.
But Jesus summed up his discussion with Nicodemus with these famous words:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not die but have eternal life.
This is Easter in a nutshell. But I’d like to make this a little more understandable and relatable to you, because Jesus didn’t intend for this to be a vague, distant teaching. It’s intensely personal.
For God so loved Japan that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God so loved Minoh that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God so loved [name] that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
That’s the Easter message. That’s what Easter is all about. Let me finish with the only proper response to this truth about God’s love for us. The apostle Peter said,
38 “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
And this is what I say to you today. Jesus Christ died for your sins and to bring you into eternal life (which starts now, not when you die). And if you want to be free from your sins and want to receive the Holy Spirit of Jesus and live with the love of God, then repent from your sins and be baptised into Jesus Christ.

You can effect this today by making a decision to turn from sin and by giving your life exclusively to Jesus. You can do this as simply as by praying a prayer of faith, accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, and, in place of baptism for today, receiving, along with the rest of the church, the elements of bread and grape juice which symbolise the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Eating and drinking these means you become one with Christ, your sins are forgiven and salvation is given to you.

I’m going to say a prayer of salvation now. On this Easter day, if you want to start your life over, be born again in Christ, and enter the kingdom of God, then pray this prayer with me in your heart, and then come forward with everyone else for prayer and to receive the elements of communion.

Sinner’s Prayer/
Dear God in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness.

I believe that Your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin.

You said in Your Holy Word, that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved.

Right now I confess Jesus as the Lord of my soul. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved.

Thank you Jesus for your unlimited grace which has saved me from my sins. I thank you Jesus that your grace never leads to license, but rather it always leads to repentance. Therefore Lord Jesus transform my life so that I may bring glory and honor to you alone and not to myself. Fill me with your Holy Spirit that I might live under your guidance and receive the full measure of blessings that you intend for me.

With all my heart I desire to love You Father God, follow You Lord Jesus, and be filled every day with Your Holy Spirit.

Thank you for saving me and giving me eternal life.
Amen.
