The Holy and the Common – Valuing Like Christ

In the kids’ message this morning we were looking at a special word.
Holiness.
When we think of the very nature of God – His attributes – I suspect that loving is the first thing that many people think of.
And it’s easy to understand why. God is love.
Other key attributes would be powerful, mighty, just, forgiving, kind.

But when the Bible takes us right before the throne of God, right into His presence (in the books of Isaiah and Ezekiel and Revelation) the angels before God are not crying out “Loving, loving, loving is the Lord God Almighty!”
They’re not crying out “Powerful, powerful, powerful is the Lord God Almighty!”
They’re crying out
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.”Revelation 4:8
They’re really emphatic about the holiness of God.

1. Holiness is the very essence of who God is

This morning I really want us to try to grasp what this holiness of God is because it’s something that we are to have, too.

It’s what we call a communicable attribute of God, which means it’s a part of God which He shares with us.

“He has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature.” 2 Peter 1:4

God’s holiness means that He is separated from sin and devoted to seeking His own honour.

For very fallible and corrupt human beings, that might seem to be a bit of an odd definition.
But holiness is about separation.
Separating the godly from the common and separating the common from the profane.
It is not a list of do’s and don’t’s.
Holiness leads to an inward desire to separate ourselves from the values of the world and to align ourselves with the values of Christ.
It is the Holy Spirit imparting his own nature into our lives. That’s what holiness is.

2. Holiness is to be the essence of who we are

Holiness is to be our ultimate life goal.
Not our savings, our education, our image or status. It’s holiness.
“Be holy, because I am holy.” Leviticus 11:45
This call to holiness affects everything.
It affects our decision making (and we looked at this when we studied wisdom a few weeks ago).
It affects our business, friendship and romantic relationships.
It affects our values, ethics and morals. It affects our behaviour, our speech and our thinking.
Unlike in OT times when certain regulations had to be followed for a person to be holy, in NT times, everything is to be holy. We are to be holy.

Holiness is not just a series of rules to follow but it is to be the essence of who we are.
We are set apart from sin and we are set apart to God.
We don’t need a list of rules for what we are to do and not do.
We need a new heart that yearns to be holy.

I wrote about this in Tuesday’s mail.
This yearning to be holy, this yearning to spend time in the presence of God should be a natural response to the Spirit of God living within us.

In the kids’ message I talked about Pierre being holy. It’s true! Praise God!
Pierre has been made holy! It is now the essence of who he is. Not by following the law but by receiving Jesus as the Lord of his life.

3. Holiness is the result of the Spirit of Jesus living in us.

In the OT holiness came through the OT law.
That was the purpose of the OT law.
The law was given to make God’s people holy.
But it was very arduous and complicated.
And it was only ever a temporary measure until something or someone better and more permanent came along.
That someone was Jesus.

Since NT times, holiness comes through the redemptive work of Christ.
The Spirit of Jesus enters us at conversion and then sanctification – that is, the process of becoming holy – begins.

This was foreshadowed in the OT.
[Kids to act out] One day, Moses was tending his sheep in the wilderness.
And suddenly he sees a burning bush.
He goes over to take a closer look and he hears the voice of God.
And God says
“Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5
Moses was standing on holy ground.
Now, what’s important to understand is that it wasn’t the soil itself that was holy.

If Moses had dug it up and carried it around with him, it wouldn’t have meant much.
It wasn’t the ground itself that was holy but it was the presence of a Holy God that made the ground holy.

This means for us today,
when we penitently take communion we are standing on holy ground.
When we read or teach from the Word of God we are standing on holy ground.
When we pray we are standing on holy ground.
When we’re washing the dishes at the kitchen sink we’re standing on holy ground because as Christian people the Spirit of God never leaves us.
His holy presence is always available to us.
We can quench and grieve the Spirit of God within us by sinning.
When we do our relationship with God remains but our fellowship with Him is broken until we repent.
We need to move back onto holy ground, come back into the presence of God.
We’re able to come back onto holy ground because the death of Jesus ripped the curtain of the temple in two and gave us direct access to the throne of the Holy God.

4. Holiness leads to radical change

David Wilkerson, the founding pastor of Times Square Church in New York, discusses three areas of radical change when we are standing on holy ground, living in the presence of a holy God. I want to finish with these three thoughts which highlight the radical change that holiness brings.

i. Holy ground is a place where our sins and weaknesses are exposed.
Before a holy God our sins are exposed for the purpose of learning that our strength can only be in God if we are to be holy and work in His Kingdom.
God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. Hebrews 12:10

ii. Holy ground is a place of no reputation.
Wilkerson wrote to group called the Kingston Trust to get biographical backgrounds on men who had served in a wonderful ministry.
This is the answer he received from the Trust:

“Dear David – These men labored mostly unknown and unrecognized in their time.
They allowed little to be written about themselves; consequently, there is nothing to send you.
They were concerned only with the glory of Christ and cared nothing for reputation or recognition.”

Wow!
No pictures! No press clippings. No glamour.
No flowery recommendations from well-known pastors. Nothing left of their work or reputation but the message of Christ.

Wilkerson comments on this in a sermon:

“Let me tell you honestly what I believe a number of well-known ministers ought to do.
Shut it all down for a while and get alone with God.
Enter into a time and place of no reputation.
Decrease! Shut down all the machinery – turn off all the cameras – silence all the publicity.
Let all the promotion grind to a halt.
Let the dear man of God isolate himself from the public eye, and let him touch God for a new revelation of Christ.
Then bring back what is of God, in a purified form.”

Incidentally, Rick Warren did exactly this. The result was a book called The Purpose Driven Life.
Jesus Himself is our model when it comes to loss of reputation:
Jesus made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Philippians 2:7

iii. Holy Ground Is A Condition Of Freedom From Materialism.
Nothing saps the power and authority of a man of God quicker than materialism.
To get on holy ground, we have to cut the cord of materialism.
Wilkerson says (and I am the same), I have not yet come to that place, but that is my goal.

I really want to encourage each of you individually and us as a unified community to seek out the holiness of God, to understand your own holiness and pray and ask God to show you what that means in the way you live your life.
I want to encourage you to “be holy as He is holy”.
I want to encourage you to value as Jesus valued.
Pray.
