Hosea

Hosea is the first of the Twelve minor prophets.

Did anyone read the book of Hosea in this last week?

In the last month?

In the last year?

Decade?

Have you ever wondered why the books of the minor prophets are in the Bible?
Because they’re great!

They are part of the inspired Word of God.

In preparing for today’s sermon I was reminded that the minor prophets rock!
Their writings are wonderful and powerful and we are the poorer for neglecting them!

Overview of Hosea: [image]

Pentateuch (law), history, wisdom literature, major prophets.
Today minor prophets.

Hosea prophesied just before the fall and just after the fall of the northern Kingdom (Israel).
There was a lot of prophetic activity going on at this time (in both Israel and Judah).
God was warning His people, ‘Get your lives right before me or I will cut you off!’
Hosea was a contemporary of Amos. And he was the only one of the twelve minor prophets to come from the northern kingdom (Israel).
All the others came from the southern kingdom (Judah).

We can see three themes in the book of Hosea.

1. Judgement 裁き

The Bible describes numerous instances of God exercising His judgement:
The flood, the conquest, the exile, to name a few.
There will be a final judgement also at the second coming of Christ and we would be very foolish to ignore it or to downplay it in any way.
“War is a terrible curse that the human race brings on itself as it seeks to possess the earth by its own unrighteous ways. But it pales before the curse that awaits all those who do not heed God’s testimony to Himself or His warnings – those who oppose the rule of God and reject His offer of grace.”
NIV notes

Last week Pastor Mike spoke on love.
And I’m so glad he did! Because God is love and God’s love is so different from the love of the world. We need to know this.
We also need to know that God is much more than love.

Here’s where many get caught up.

They say “How can a loving God allow this tragedy?”, “How could a God of love let such bad things happen to good people?” etc.
Have you ever heard anyone ask, “How could a holy God tolerate sin?” “How could a holy God not punish the sinful?” No-one asks that, do they?
To simply say “God is a God of love” and leave it there, leaves us with a one-dimensional God who conforms easily to who we believe God should be.
God is a God of love. And He is also a God who is holy, righteous and just. He is also a judge.

Because of His holiness and righteousness, He cannot let sin go unpunished. And so we have a God of judgement as well as a God of love.
There’s an aspect to God’s judgement that I would like to address this morning because it is sometimes raised and it can be troubling.
“The penalty doesn’t fit the crime: eternal punishment for temporal sin isn’t fair.”

Essentially by stating this, we became the judge and instead of God judging us, we judge God.
To be sure, this is a big issue and I can’t address it all today but let me respond with four brief answers.
i. The people who say this do not understand the nature of sin.

ii. Jesus taught very clearly about degrees of punishmentイエスは罰の度合いをはっきりと教えられました。
(just as He spoke of degrees of reward). So there is no one-size-fits-all punishment. God’s punishment does fit the crime.

iii. God is holy and righteous.
He is supremely just by nature. He is right when He judges.
He is fair.

iv. Most importantly!
God is not only our judge but also our rescuer.
God’s love reaches out to all people to save us from the punishment of sin.

This leads us to the second theme in the book of Hosea.

2. Repentance.
As humans we don’t repent well. It’s not in our nature.
When I think of natural human repentance, I think of this: Blues Brothers clip.
The good news is the Bible teaches us how to truly repent, and the book of Hosea is no exception:
“Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us
but he will bind up our wounds.
After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him.
As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains that water the earth.”
Hosea 6:1-3/
This is true repentance, right?!
Wrong!
This is human repentance.
This is false repentance.

This is where God’s people often go wrong.
We take God’s goodness for granted and allow that to lead us into insincere repentance.
We think that deep down God is a big softy – big teddy bear – who, given enough time, will eventually calm down and forgive and forget and heal and shine on us again because He is God and that’s what God does.
That’s the mistake the Israelites made and they paid heavily for it.
Let us not make the same mistake.

Because of insincere repentance (or false repentance) we fail to receive forgiveness and we fail to live a truly renewed life with a new heart of flesh and a truly transformed mind.

Let me give you an example of true repentance from the Bible:

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge…
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
Psalm 51:1-4,17/

Please read the rest of Psalm 51 for homework. If you need to repent, that’s how it’s done.

True repentance then leads to the third theme in Hosea:

iii. Abundance 豊かさ

The abundance of God’s love.
“Despite the unavoidable judgement announced, the major purpose of the book [of Hosea] is to proclaim God’s compassion and love that cannot – finally – let Israel go.” NIV notes

God is a generous God who provides abundantly and whose love is lavish.

I can’t emphasise this enough, especially when we have been talking about judgement and repentance. Look at how God revealed Himself to Moses. This is the God of heaven:

“The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished.” Exodus 34:6,7
Let me say again, God is a generous God who provides abundantly and whose love is lavish.

Let me share with you the abundance I see in our church.
I see a church that is growing in every respect.
I see a church that is truly repentant.
I see a church that is hungry to know God.
I see a church that desires to be filled afresh with the Holy Spirit.
I see a church that has grown in discipleship and is growing in maturity.
I see a church that desires to worship in Spirit and in truth.
I see a church that desires to share its faith.
And I see a church that is growing in size as people come to Christ.
But I believe this is just a beginning.
I believe that God has so much more for us and we are not to slow down or take God’s blessings for granted.
I believe that we are to enjoy the period of growth before us.
At the same time I also believe that we are called to bring God’s Kingdom to the earth.
I believe we are to be ministers of His Word, of His mercy and of His power.
And we are to expand this garden of a church into a park, and then expand the park into a national reserve.
I firmly believe we are entering a period of abundance.

Therefore, I have a warning for you. The warning comes from the book of Hosea 13:6
God says,
When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud;
then they forgot me.

Heed the warning, church!

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. (Matthew 3:8)

Delight in the Lord that He might give you the desires of your heart. (From Psalm 37:4)

And continue to seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness. (From Matthew 6:33)

Pray.
