Joy and Hardship In Christ
キリストにある喜びと苦難
Palm Sunday
Today is what is known on the church calendar as ‘Palm Sunday’.
今日は教会のカレンダーではパームサンデーと言われる日です。
On Palm Sunday we remember the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.
パームサンデーは、私たちが、イエス様がロバに乗ってイスラエルの地に踏み入れたことを思い出すための日です。
He was not only riding a donkey, though, he was also riding a wave of great popularity.
イエス様はロバにただ乗っていただけではなく、ものすごい声援の中、ロバに乗って群衆の中を通っていました。
He had recently raised Lazarus from the dead and healed blind Bartimaeus, amongst performing other miracles.
その当時、たくさんの奇跡を起こし、中でもラザロを死から蘇らせ、盲目のバルティマイをちょうど癒したところでした。
He had given some ground-breaking teaching.
衝撃的な、画期的な教えを人々に施したところでした。
And all the people were going nuts.
そして、人々は熱狂しました。
The threw their cloaks on the ground for His donkey to walk on, they waved palm branches, and they shouted ‘Hallelujah!’ and ‘Praise God!’.
群衆の人々はイエスのロバの通り道を自らのマントで覆い、ヤシの木の枝を振りかざしました。そして「ハレルヤ神を賛美します」と叫んでいました。
And it was generally a very happy and festive time.
それはいわゆる幸せなお祭りのような祝福の時でした。
This festive mood wasn’t just because of the amazing things that Jesus had been doing and saying.
このお祭り気分は、単に、イエスが行動や言葉によって素晴しい偉業を成し遂げたからという訳ではありませんでした。
It was also because of the expectation surrounding Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem which we hear in the shouts of the crowd.
イエスがエルサレムにやってきたことへの期待もあり、人々はお祭り気分に浸っていたのです。それは群衆の叫び声によっても、聞き取ることができます。
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Luke 19:38
「主の御名によってきたる王に、祝福あれ。天には平和、いと高きところには栄光あれ」。ルカによる福音書19:38
The meaning of these cries might be lost on many people today but they certainly weren’t lost on the Pharisees of Jesus’ day.
今日の人々は、この聖書の箇所の意味が何であるかわからないと思いますが、当時のパリサイの人々はイエスがメシヤであることがわかっていました。そのことが、このルカによる福音書の１９章３８節に書かれています。
They knew these cries associated Jesus with Messiahship and they immediately moved to address this. They said, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
パリサイ人たちは、これらの叫はイエスがメシヤであることと関係していることを知っており、すぐさまこのことを反対しはじめました。数人のパリサイ人たちは群衆の中からイエスにこう言いました、「先生、あなたの弟子たちをおしかり下さい」
Jesus replied, “Even if they keep quiet, the stones along the road will burst into cheers!”
イエスはこう答えました。「あなたがたに言うが、もしこの人たちが黙れば、石が叫ぶであろう」
It was good and it was fitting that Jesus be praised – as the Messiah – as he entered Jerusalem.
イエスがメシヤとしてイスラエルの地に足を踏み入れた時に、このように賛美されたのは、当然のことでした。
So there was great rejoicing amongst the people.
人々は大いなる喜びを感じていました。

Here’s my question to you this morning:
ここで、今朝みなさんに質問があります。
How do you think Jesus was feeling? [Open question]
イエスはこの時どのように感じていたと思いますか？
I suspect that Jesus had many mixed feelings.
私は、個人的に、イエスはその時、複雑な気分だっただろうなと思っています。
On one hand, He received the praise of the people.
一方で、イエスは人々の祝福を受けました。
He could see and hear and share in their joy.
イエスは人々の声を聞き、喜びを感じ取ることができました。
On the other hand, he knew what lay ahead in Jerusalem.
しかし一方では、イエスはエルサレムでこれから自分に起こるであろう出来事を知っていました。
He had already predicted his death.
イエスは自分の死を予測していたのです。
And several times he had wept openly with these words:
そして幾度か彼は、みんなの前で次のように嘆き悲しんでいました：
“O, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” Matthew 23:37-39
ああ、エルサレム、エルサレム、預言者たちを殺し、おまえにつかわされた人たちを石で打ち殺す者よ。ちょうど、めんどりが翼の下にそのひなを集めるように、わたしはおまえの子らを幾たび集めようとしたことであろう。それだのに、おまえたちは応じようとしなかった。 見よ、おまえたちの家は見捨てられてしまう。わたしは言っておく、『主の御名によってきたる者に、祝福あれ』とおまえたちが言う時までは、今後ふたたび、わたしに会うことはないであろう」。マタイによる福音書23:37-39
In many ways,Jesus’ journey into Jerusalem reflects the journey of the Christian life:
いろんな意味で 、イエスのエルサレムへの道はクリスチャン人生の道を反映しています。
Jesus said, イエスはこう言いました。
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24
だれでもわたしについてきたいと思うなら、自分を捨て、自分の十字架を負うて、わたしに従ってきなさい。 マタイによる福音書16:24
This is the way of the Christian life.
このことが、まさにクリスチャンとして生きるということなのです。
The writer of Hebrews puts this in rather extraordinary terms:
ヘブライ人への手紙の中で、このことはもっと極端に書かれています。
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2
信仰の導き手であり、またその完成者であるイエスを仰ぎ見つつ、走ろうではないか。彼は、自分の前におかれている喜びのゆえに、恥をもいとわないで十字架を忍び、神の御座の右に座するに至ったのである。ヘブライ人への手紙12:2
“For the joy set before Him endured the cross.” 自分の前におかれている喜びのゆえに十字架を忍び
It’s not easy to grasp the magnitude of that statement.
この言葉の意味の大きさは私たちには測りしれません。
But we need to because in the same way, for the joy set before us, we take up our cross and follow Christ. Paul knew this. He said much the same thing:
しかし知っておく必要があるのは、同じように、「私たちの前に与えられている喜びがゆえに、十字架を負いキリストに従うのだ」ということです。
（同じように、私たちの前におかれている喜びのゆえに、十字架を負い、キリストに従うのです。）
“In all my suffering my joy knows no bounds.” 2 Corinthians 7:4
わたしはあらゆる患難の中にあって喜びに満ちあふれている。 コリントの信徒への手紙二7:4
The Christian life is full of joy.
クリスチャンの人生は喜び’にあふれています。
It’s also comes with hardship.
しかし苦難も伴います。
And we shouldn’t be surprised or disappointed to find both in our lives.
その両方があることに驚いたりがっかりしたりするべきではありません。
The hardship will come from different sources.
クリスチャンの困難はいろんな理由で起こります。
Sometimes it will come from persecution as people oppose us in our faith.
時には私たちの信仰に対する、他の人々からの迫害によって苦難を受けます。
Sometimes it will come from the world as we deal with sickness, loss and other trials.
時には、この世での私たちに起こる病や死であったり、その他の試練によって苦難があります。
Sometimes it will come directly from Satan as we deal with temptation, doubt and confusion.
時には、悪魔による直接的な誘惑、疑い、混乱によって苦難があります。
Sometimes hardship will come as a result of our own poor choices.
時には、自分たちの愚かな選択によって苦難が起こってしまうこともあります。
And sometimes hardship will come as a result of obedience to Christ. (See Mark 4:35-41)
そして時に、キリストに従順であるがゆえに苦難が起こってしまうこともあります。

Listen to what Paul wrote to Timothy:
パウロがテモテに書いたことを見てみましょう。
You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 2 Timothy 3:10-12
しかしあなたは、わたしの教、歩み、こころざし、信仰、寛容、愛、忍耐、それから、わたしがアンテオケ、イコニオム、ルステラで受けた数々の迫害、苦難に、よくも続いてきてくれた。そのひどい迫害にわたしは耐えてきたが、主はそれらいっさいのことから、救い出して下さったのである。いったい、キリスト・イエスにあって信心深く生きようとする者は、みな、迫害を受ける。テモテへの手紙二3:10-12
We do a terrible disservice to new believers and seekers if we tell them that the Christian life is all roses.
もし私たちが新しく信者になったばかりの兄弟姉妹に「クリスチャンの人生とはバラ色ですよ、素晴しいですよ」と言ったとしたら、酷い仕打ちをしていることになります。
Living a godly life invites persecution and living in a broken world involves suffering.
神のように聖い人生を送るということは、迫害を招き、この崩れてしまった世の中で、苦難することを意味します。
The road to the Kingdom of God is narrow, windy and full of obstacles.
神の御国への道は狭く、風当たりが強く、障害だらけです。
Imagine you get a phone call one day and are told that you have just won a free trip to a tropical island (maybe one of those Greek ones we looked at a few weeks ago).
もしあなたが、ある日、「南国の島への旅行が当たりましたよ」という電話をもらったとしたらどうでしょうか。想像してみてください。以前、子供達に見せたようなギリシャの島の写真のような島を想像してください。
You’re absolutely thrilled!
喜んで興奮しますよね！
You go into the travel agent the next day and find out, it’s true.
さらに次の日、旅行会社に行ってみると、それが本当のことだとわかったらどうでしょう。
As the travel agent explains the details of the trip to you, you have the following conversation:
そして旅行会社があなたに旅行の詳細を説明してくれます。次のような会話が始まります：
“Your flight leaves from Kansai airport,” she says.
「あなたの飛行機は関西空港から出発します。」と旅行会社の女性社員が言います。
“I don’t like Kansai airport,” you say. “It’s too far away. I’m exhausted by the time I get there.”
「 でも、関西空港から出発するのは嫌なんです。とても遠いし、空港に着くまでに疲れてしまいます。」とあなたが言ったとしましょう。
She ignores your complaint. “You have to go through check in, customs and immigration.”
しかし旅行会社の社員はあなたの言ったことを無視して、「チェックインをして入国審査にそのまま進んでください」と続けます。
“You’re kidding me. I hate waiting in line and shuffling through those things. I feel like a sheep being herded.”
「冗談じゃないですよ。並ぶのは大嫌いだし、羊飼いの羊でもあるまいし、荷物を持ってうろうろするのは嫌です。」とあなたは言います。
“Then you will fly to Athens via Abu Dhabi.”
「そして、アブダビ経由でアテネに行ってください。」
“Fly? Really? Planes are dangerous. They go down all the time. Isn’t there another way?”
「飛ぶ？本当ですか？飛行機なんて危険なものに乗るのは嫌ですよ。墜落だってよくしてるし、他にその島に行く方法はないんですか？」
“No.”
答えは「他に方法はありません」でした。
“And do I have to stop in Abu Dhabi? What if they take my laptop computer while I’m there?”
「それにアブダビにどうしても止まらなくてはいけないんですか？アブダビで自分のコンピューターが没収されたりしたらどうするんですか！？」
She continues. “Once you arrive in Athens…”
その女性社員はそれでも言い続けます。「アテネに行ってですね。到着しましたら、、。」
“Wait a minute, you said I was going to a Greek island. You never said anything about having to go through Athens.”
「ちょっと待ってください！あなた、私はギリシャの島に行くと行ってましたよね。アテネに行くなんて、聞いてませんよ！」
“You have to go through Athens to get to the islands”…
「アテネに行ってもらってから、その島に着くんです。」
And so on. You can imagine the travel agent wanting to give the prize to someone else.
そんな調子で、旅行会社はまるで、あなたを嫌がらせて他の人に賞品の旅行をあげようとしているようにさえ思えます。
You can’t expect to step out of your house and straight onto the sand of a tropical island.
ひょいと家から飛び出して、次の瞬間には南国の島の砂の上を歩いているなんていう、うまい話はありません。
In the same way, some Christians expect their trip to heaven to be an easy ride all the way to the pearly gates.
ある意味、クリスチャンたちは神様の国、天国に、ひょいと簡単に乗り物に乗って、その真珠でできた門を潜れるかのように思っています。
When we travel, it helps to keep in mind the beauty of the purpose of the destination.
私たちがどこかに旅をするとき、終着点に到着する目的を知っていた方がいいですよね。
In much the same way, in living out our faith, we need to remember the joy and the purpose set before us.
それと同じように、信仰に生きるにあたり、私たちの前におかれている喜びとその目的を覚えておく必要があります。
Just as Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him, so we are to persevere in our faith for the joy set before us.
イエスが、神のみ前に準備されている喜びを思って、十字架に耐えたように、私たちクリスチャンも、神によって私たちに備えられている喜びを思い、信仰を持ち続けるのです。
Let’s focus on this joy: この喜びに焦点をあてていきましょう
1 Peter 1:8 ペトロの手紙一1:8
The apostle Peter wrote,弟子のペテロはこう書きました。
“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, unless you have had a bad childhood experience somewhere that you are still getting over.”
あなたがたは、イエス・キリストを見たことはないが、彼を愛している。現在、見てはいけないけれども、信じて、言葉につくせない、輝きにみちた喜びにあふれている。子どものころの苦い経験から今でも立ち直ろうとしているのでなければ。
Is that right? Let’s try again:正しいと思いませんか？もう一度読んでみましょう。
“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, unless you have just lost your job, or can’t find one, or you don’t particularly like the terms and conditions of your current job.”
あなたがたは、イエス・キリストを見たことはないが、彼を愛している。現在、見てはいけないけれども、信じて、言葉につくせない、輝きにみちた喜びにあふれている。失業していたり、仕事が見つからない、今の仕事の条件がどうも好きでないという状況になければ。
Sound right? Let’s try again.そうだと思いませんか？もう一度読んでみましょう。
“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, unless you’re in the middle of exams or got a bad score in a recent project.”
あなたがたは、イエス・キリストを見たことはないが、彼を愛している。現在、見てはいけないけれども、信じて、言葉につくせない、輝きにみちた喜びにあふれている。試験の真最中だったり、プロジェクトの成績が悪かったりしなければ。
Maybe this one:ではこれはどうでしょう。
“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, unless you’re suffering from depression, of course, or some other form of melancholy.”
あなたがたは、イエス・キリストを見たことはないが、彼を愛している。現在、見てはいけないけれども、信じて、言葉につくせない、輝きにみちた喜びにあふれている。うつ病や憂鬱な思いに苦しんでいるのでなければ。
You get the point.
そうです。
We all have a desire from time to time to say that the truth of the Word doesn’t apply in my life at the moment because of what I’m going through.
私たちは皆、自分の身に起こっている苦難を考えると、この世の現実が直視できない時が往々にして、あります。
Here’s what the scripture really says,
このことを、聖書の箇所は実に次のように述べています。
“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
あなたがたは、イエス・キリストを見たことはないが、彼を愛している。現在、見てはいけないけれども、信じて、言葉につくせない、輝きにみちた喜びにあふれている。ペトロの手紙一1:8
（Realising joy
喜びに気づく）
How do we realise this joy in the face of life’s hardships? By understanding that the very essence of Christian living is supernatural.
人生の苦難に直面してこの喜びをどのように実感すればいいのでしょうか？それは、クリスチャン生活の本質は人知を超えたものであるということを理解することによってです。
The power to persevere, the power to overcome, the power to have boundless joy in the face of suffering, comes from heaven, not from our own strength.
信仰を保つ力を持つ、困難に打ち勝つ力を持つ、苦難の中にいても、自分で困難に打ち勝とうとする力を身につけるのではなく、天国からくる果てしない喜びを感じる力を持つ。
Read 2 Corinthians 7 and you’ll see how
第二コリント人への手紙７章を読んでみてください。わかってもらえると思います。
it’s not odd for the Christian to experience real joy and real sorrow at the same time.
クリスチャンが本当の喜びと本当の悲しみを同時に経験するのは珍しいことではありません。 This is a natural result of having the Spirit of God in our hearts while we live in a sinful world.
それは罪ある世界に生きている私たちの心に神の御霊があることの、当然の結果です。
Jim Cymbala puts it like this:ジム シンバル牧師はこう言っています。
“The Holy Spirit’s power is not an option for those who desperately want to be like Christ; he is the only answer. We must get delivered from the idea so prevalent around us that Christianity begins with a supernatural new birth, sin is erased, the conscience is cleansed – but then it’s up to us to try real hard to be good and obey God’s commands. No, it’s God’s work from beginning to end. Just as forgiveness can only come through Christ’s work on Calvary, daily living for the Lord can only be done through the Spirit.” (Fresh Power, p 159)
聖霊の力は切実にキリストのようになりたいと願っている人の選択ではありません。聖霊の力が唯一の答えなのです。キリスト教は人知を超えた新生から始まり、罪が消され、良心が清められるが、その後は一生懸命良くなろうと神の命令に従うという私たちの周りに広まっている考えから解放されなければなりません。そうではなくて、初めから終わりまで神のはたらきによるのです。赦しがカルバリーでのキリストのわざを通してのみ成し遂げられるように、主のために日々生きることは、聖霊を通してのみなされることである。
Joy is not merely the product of a job well done.
喜びは良い仕事をしたから感じるのではありません。
Joy is not merely the result of a successful or easy life or ministry.
喜びは宣教の成功や、宣教のたやすさからくるものではない。
Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.
喜びは御霊の実です。
As Pastor Mike wrote in last week’s church mail,
マイク牧師が先週のメールのメッセージの中で書いたように。
“The Holy Spirit is a gift to all believers. Without it, we can do nothing of Kingdom value.
聖霊は全ての信者への贈物です。それがなくては、私達は御国における価値ある事を何ら行うことはできません。
But with it, we are empowered to do everything Jesus Christ taught us, including enjoying an exciting life of faith.”
しかし、それがあれば、私達は力を授かり、イエスキリストが教えて下さった全ての事を行うことが出来るのです。そこには喜ばしい信仰生活を楽しむ事も含まれます。
Open your heart to Him today.
神様に心を開いてください。
