I was reading some materials from a Japanese elementary school ethics (doutoku) class recently which was reinforcing to students how much alike we all are.
最近、日本の小学校の道徳の本を読みましたが、そこには私たちはみなよく似ているということが強調されていました。
The materials said that we’re all pretty much the same, so we should care for one another and not think that other people are so different from ourselves.
私たちはみなほとんど同じだから、お互いを思いやり、ほかの人たちが自分たちとそんなに違うと思わないようにと書いてありました。
The teaching was all about unity and inclusiveness.
これは一致と包括性についての教えです。
I also happened to read some elementary school materials recently from an international school.
インターナショナルスクールの小学校の教材も読みました。
These materials focused very much on our uniqueness.
こっちは私たちのユニークさに焦点を当てていました。
The materials said that we’re all different and should embrace our individuality and care for one another no matter how different people are.
私たちはみんな違っていて、個性を大切にし、どんなに違っていてもお互いを思いやるべきだと書いてありました。
It was all about diversity and exclusivity (in the sense of individuality).
これは多様性と個人を尊重するが故の排他性についての教えです。
While they both encourage care for others, the two different systems – the Japanese system and the western system – produce two very different world views on ourselves and other people.
両方ともお互いを思いやることを奨励していますが、この2つの異なった日本の制度と西洋の制度は、自分たちとほかの人たちについて、とても異なった世界観を生んでいます。
One focuses on unity, the other focuses on diversity.
一方は統一性に焦点を当て、もう一方は多様性に焦点を当てています。
One focuses on commonality, the other focuses on uniqueness.
一方は共通性に焦点を当て、もう一方はユニークさに焦点を当てています。
Which one is right?
どちらが正しいでしょうか？
Should we teach our kids that they are unique or common?
子どもたちにユニークであるよう教えるべきでしょうか？それともみなと同じであるよう教えるべきでしょうか？
As a church, what should we teach?
教会ではどう教えるべきでしょうか？
What does God teach about unity and diversity?
一致と多様性について神はなんと教えているでしょうか？
The simple answer is: both. God teaches that both are right.
答えは簡単です。両方です。神は両方、正しいと教えています。
This week we’ve had a wonderful time in the Maker Fun Factory program learning all about how God made us and how he has a purpose for our lives.
今週はMaker Fun Factoryで、神様がどのように私たちをお造りになり、どのように私たちに目的を持っておられるかを学ぶことができ、すばらしい時を持ちました。
(And I would like to thank Prisca, Sunny, Susan and Min who gave up their time from their families and busy lives to come out from America especially to help us run the program.)

The theme of the kids’ program was “Built for a Purpose” and it addresses these issues of who we are as individuals and as a community of people.
子どもたちのプログラムのテーマは、“目的のためにたてられた”で、個人としての私たちとコミュニティーの一員でもある私たちのことがあげられています。
1. Diversity 多様性
Let’s look first at diversity. まず多様性を見てみましょう。
We’re all unique. 私たちはみんなユニークです。
There aren’t two Pierres. There’s only one of him.
ピエールさんは2人もいません。たった一人だけです。
He’s special. It’s the same with you.
彼は特別です。あなたもそうです。
There’s only one of you. God made you and named you before you were even born.
あなたはたった一人です。神はあなたをお造りになり、生まれる前に名づけました。
You are not primarily the desire of your parents, you are the desire of God.
あなたの人生を計画し、あなたについてすべて、良いこと悪いことを知っています。
He planned your life and He knows everything about you – both the good and the bad – and He loves you with a love that is more enormous than you can possibly imagine.
神はあなたの想像をはるかに超える大きな愛であなたを愛しています。
We have great diversity here in our church.
私たちの教会は多様性に富んでいます。
We have male and female.
男性と女性に分かれています。
Stand up if you’re a male.
男性の方、立ってください。
Stand up if you’re a female. We’re different.
女性の方、立ってください。私たちは皆違っていますよね。
We have church members from so many different countries.
いろんな国から来ている人がいます。
Stand up if you’re from Japan.
日本の出身の人、立ってください。
Stand up if you’re from Korea. 韓国から来ている人、立ってください。
China. Vietnam. Indonesia. Philippines. U.S. Canada. Australia. Germany. Botswana. Marshall Islands.
中国、ベトナム、インドネシア、フィリピン、アメリカ、カナダ、オーストラリア、ドイツ, ボツワナ、マーシャル諸島からの人たちもいます。
We have people from various different language backgrounds.
いろんな言語を話す人たちがいます。
We have people from many different faith backgrounds. We have people from different socio-economic backgrounds.
いろんな信仰の背景のある人たちがいます。いろんな経済社会を背景にもつ人たちがいます。
Different educational backgrounds. Different family backgrounds. We are all unique.
いろんな教育背景、いろんな家族背景、私たちはみんなユニークです。
B. Unity 一致
At the same time we are called to unity and oneness.
それと同時に、私たちは一致を保ち、一つとなるようにと召されています。
We’re all created by God.
私たちはみな神によって創造されました。
We’re all made in the image of God (we’re all spiritual beings).
私たちはみな神のかたちに造られました。（私たちはみな霊的存在です）
We’re all equal before Him.
神の前では私たちはみな平等です。
White, black, yellow, red, green, brown, purple or turquoise; sporty, beautiful, clever, funny, talented, musical, religious – we’re all equal before God.
白、黒、黄色、赤、緑、茶色、紫、青緑色；スポーツマン、美人、賢い、おもしろい、才能がある、音楽好き、信心深いー私たちはみな神の前では平等です。
We’re all equally loved by Him.
私たちはみな神に等しく愛されています。
We’re all called to live as one before God.
私たちはみな神の前でひとつとなって生きるように召されています。
And we all share the same general purpose.
そして私たちはみな同じ共通の目的を持っています。
What is that?
それは何ですか？
What is the grand purpose of life that unites us?
私たちを結ぶ人生の大きな目的は何ですか？
To learn to love.
それは愛することを学ぶことです。
By the end (or even the middle) of your life, if you’ve made a lot of money, produced a lot of children, published a number of academic papers, built a lot of buildings, written a lot of songs, developed medicines for the sick, preached sermons, performed miracles but have not learned how to love, then you have not achieved your purpose for living.
人生の終わり（又は中ごろ）までに、お金もちになり、子どもをたくさん産み、たくさんの論文を出版し、たくさんの建物を建て、たくさんの歌を作り、病気の薬を開発し、説教をし、奇跡を行ったとしても、愛することを学ばなかったら、生きる目的に達していません。
The highest calling we have and the only one that really counts, is to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbour just the way that you love and take care of [as] yourself.
私たちの最高の使命、本当に重要なのは、心をつくして神を愛することと隣人を自分自身のように愛することです。
One of the things that we celebrate and foster in our church is diversity within unity.
私たちの教会で祝されて培われていることの一つは一致の中に存在する多様性です。
We’re all from different backgrounds (and we celebrate this) but we all share the same faith in Jesus Christ (and we rejoice in this, too).
私たちの背景はみな異なりますが、そしてそれは素晴らしいことですが、皆共通してイエス・キリストにある信仰を持っています。素晴らしいことです。
We all have different different skills and interests but we all use those toward the same purpose in God.
私たちの得意とすることや興味は異なりますが、神における同じ目的のために用います。
We all speak different languages and have weird accents but we all love one another as we love ourselves.
話す言葉が違ったり、言葉に変なアクセントがあったりしますが、互いに愛し合っています。
Learning to love God and those around us is the greatest purpose in our lives.
神と他の人々を愛することを学ぶことは、人生でいちばん大きな目的です。
I want to encourage you to never lose sight of this.
このことを見失わないでください。
Whatever you’re working on, whatever you’re having success with, whatever struggles you’re going through, remember that the greatest purpose in your life is to love God and to love those around you.
何をするにしても、どんなことに成功しても、どんな辛いことにあっていても、人生のいちばん大きな目的は神を愛することと周りの人を愛することだということを忘れないでください。
This is the great general purpose that we all share.
これが私たちみなが持っている共通の目的です。
But God also teaches us in His Word that we all have a unique purpose as well, a unique calling in our lives as well.
しかし神は御言葉の中で私たちはみなユニークな目的も持っていると教えています。ユニークな召しもあります。
We’re not clones. We’re individuals with specific, God-given skill sets, giftings and personalities.
私たちはクローンではありません。私たちは特定の神から与えられたスキル、賜物、個性を持った一個人なのです。
God said through the prophet Isaiah:
預言者イザヤと通して神はこう言われました：
I have called you by name—you are mine. Isaiah 43:1
わたしはあなたの名を呼んだ、あなたはわたしのものだ。イザヤ書43:1
Jesus personified this teaching:
イエスはこの教えを擬人化しています：
The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. John 10:2,3
門からはいる者は、羊の羊飼である。 門番は彼のために門を開き、羊は彼の声を聞く。そして彼は自分の羊の名をよんで連れ出す。 ヨハネによる福音書10:2,3
The call of God upon your life is personal.
あなたの人生の神の召しはあなただけのものです。
God calls people by name.
神は人を名前で呼ばれます。
He has both a common purpose and a unique purpose for your life.
神はあなたへの、共通の目的とユニークな目的の両方を持っておられます。
I want to share with you something really wonderful and important about your unique purpose.
あなたのユニークな目的について、本当に素晴らしくて大切なことがあるのです。そのことについて話をさせてください。
Sometimes God gives us a very clear and specific call regarding what we are to do with our lives (or what we are not to do with our lives).
私たちが何をしたらいいか（何をしなくていいか）について、神はとてもはっきりと明確な使命を私たちに与えるときがあります。
And we are incredibly blessed when we follow this calling.
それに従うなら私たちは驚くほどに祝福されます。
But for the most part, we’ve been given tremendous freedom, within guidelines, to live out our unique purpose.
しかしほとんどの場合、私たちにはユニークな目的を生きぬくために、導かれて入ると同時に、たくさんの自由も与えられています。
This is because for the most part, the specific purpose God has placed on our lives is not so much ‘what we do’ but rather ‘how we do it’ in living our lives.
これはほとんどの場合、神がおかれた特定の目的は「私たちが何をするか」よりも「私たちがそれをどうするか」ということにあるからです。
The Bible says, in most cases, to fulfil your purpose, you don’t need to change jobs or houses or countries.
ほとんどの場合において、聖書は、自分の目的を達成するために仕事を変えたり、引越しをしたり、違う国に行かなくてもいいと言っています。
You just need to let God change your heart.
神に心を変えてもらうだけでいいのです。
You just need to love and follow His Son Jesus.
御子イエスを愛し、従うだけでいいのです。
The Christian message is this: クリスチャンのメッセージはこうです：
Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God through miracles, wonders and signs.
ナザレのイエスは奇跡、不思議としるしを通して神によって遣わされた人でした。
He was handed over by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge to evil men who put him to death by nailing him to a cross.
神の故意の計画と十字架にかけて死なせた悪人の予知によって引き渡されました。
But God raised him from the dead. (Acts 2:22-24) He is risen and now lives and intercedes for us as we live our lives.
しかし神はイエスを死からよみがえらせました。（使途2:22-24）イエスはよみがえりました。
そして今、生きていて、私たちのためにとりなしをしてくださるのです。
Paul explains the application of this event for us in personal terms:
パウロはこの出来事を個人に当てはまるように説明しています：
God wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:4
神は、すべての人が救われて、真理を悟るに至ることを望んでおられる。テモテへの手紙一2:4
and そして
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
すなわち、自分の口で、イエスは主であると告白し、自分の心で、神が死人の中からイエスをよみがえらせたと信じるなら、あなたは救われる。 ローマの信徒への手紙10:9
Jesus also said, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” John 6:29
イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「神がつかわされた者を信じることが、神のわざである」。ヨハネによる福音書6:29
It’s in Jesus that we ultimately love God.
私たちが究極的に神を愛するのはイエスのうちにあります。
For those who believe in the resurrected Jesus, a transaction happens and our true purpose is found.
よみがえったイエスを信じている者には、神の力が働き、真の目的が見つかるようになります。
Our sins are taken from us and we are declared righteous by God.
よみがえったイエスを信じている者には、罪が取り除かれ、私たちは神によって義だと宣言されます。
Then He puts a whole new spirit within us.
そして神は私たちのうちに全く新しい霊を入れます。
That new Spirit – the Holy Spirit of God – produces in us all sorts of fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control – and these fruits, enable us to fulfill both the general and the specific God-given purposes for our lives.
その新しい霊、つまり神の聖霊は、あらゆる実を結びます：愛、喜び、平安、寛容、親切、善意、誠実、柔和、自制ーこれらの実と賜物が、神を愛し、隣人を愛すという「誰にでも共通する目的」と神から与えられた「あなただけの特定の目的」の両方を私たちが果たせるようにしてくれます。
Let me finish with this.
最後に言います。
You were made for a purpose.
あなたはある目的のために造られました。
Your purpose is to love God and to understand that you are loved by God.
あなたの目的は神を愛することと神に愛されていることを理解することです。
Your purpose is to believe in Jesus and to follow Him as the ultimate demonstration of God’s love.
あなたの目的はイエスを信じ、神の愛をの実証として神に従うことです。
Your purpose is to receive the Spirit of Jesus in your heart so that you can know God, live a life that pleases Him and love others as God loves them.
あなたの目的は神を知ることができるようイエスの霊を心に受け入れ、神に喜ばれる人生を生きることと神が愛するように人を愛することです。 Pray.
