Mini-sermon #1 (Kids’ Message) Sounds That Please
Can you listen to these sounds and tell me what they are?
What is this sound?
これは何の音ですか？
1,2,3,4,5,6,7.
Jesus said something very important about the sounds that we make. He said,
“It is not what goes into your mouth that makes you ritually unclean; rather, what comes out of it makes you unclean.” Matthew 15:11
口にはいるものは人を汚すことはない。かえって、口から出るものが人を汚すのである」。マタイによる福音書15:11
So don’t worry too much about what food goes into your mouth.
Let your mum and dad worry about that.
What’s really important for young kids – and big kids – to think about, is the words that come out of our mouths.
Words are very important.
With words that you can make a friend, and with words you can break a friendship. Which are you going to do?
With words you can praise God and give Him thanks, and with words you can put people down. Which are you going to do?
With words that you can say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and ‘that’s very kind of you’, and with words you can complain. Which are you going to do?
Paul in the Bible said, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing”. Philippians 2:14
すべてのことを、つぶやかず疑わないでしなさい。フィリピの信徒への手紙2:14
In Australia, we call people who complain all the time ‘whingers’. (And if there’s a whole group of them – like the English – we call them ‘a bunch of whingers’.) Today I want you to make a promise here in the church. According to what Paul has written, I want you to say: “I will not be a whinger”.
Okay, so we know we’re not supposed to whinge. So, what things are we supposed to talk about? Good news! The Bible tells us! Here’s a short list (based on 1 Corinthians 13): It says that when we speak:
* Don’t be quick to speak but listen carefully first
すぐに話さないで、まずよく聞く
* Use kind words
優しい言葉を使う
* Say good things about other people
人のいいことを言う
* Don’t say good things about yourself. (Let other people do that.)
自分のいいことは言わない（ほかの人に言ってもらう）
* Don’t speak angrily (even if you’re feeling angry)
怒って話さない（怒りを感じていても）
* Don’t talk about mistakes that others have made in the past
過去の人の間違いのことを話さない
* Always tell the truth! (then people will know that you’re trustworthy)
いつも本当のことを話す（そうすれば人に信頼されます）

Mini-sermon #2 Our Words
私たちの言葉
In the first mini-sermon, I quoted Jesus: 最初のお話の中で、イエスが次のように言ったと伝えました。
“It is not what goes into your mouth that makes you ritually unclean; rather, what comes out of it makes you unclean.” Matthew 15:11
口にはいるものは人を汚すことはない。かえって、口から出るものが人を汚すのである」。マタイによる福音書15:11
Our world is so utterly obsessed with what goes into our mouths and so utterly unconcerned, it seems, with what comes out.
私たちの世界は自分たちの口に入ってくるものが何なのかということに気を取られていて、何が私たちの口から出てくるのかなんて気にもとめていないようです。
The modern world is so gluttonous that we now have more obese people than hungry people.
近年の世の中は食べ物に貪欲になっていて、お腹の空いている人々より、肥満の人達の方が多いぐらいです。
Our world is so gluttonous that we no longer know what gluttony is – it’s just normal.
私たちの世界は貪欲になっていて、暴飲暴食が何であるかなんてわからないぐらい、当たり前のことになっています。
And then we have diets.
そしてダイエットをしなくてはなりません。
How many magazines can you sell on a diet? An awful lot, it seems.
どれぐらいの雑誌がダイエットの特集を組むことによって売れているのでしょうか？たくさん売れると思います。
Look at some of these magazine covers:これらの雑誌の表紙をみてください。

You know what I’d like to see? I’d like to see magazines promoting word diets. Like this,

Word diet: Speak less!
言葉のダイエットといえば、言葉を減らす、口数を少なくするということでしょう。
The Kind Word Diet – How I Won Ten Friends in a Month Just By Speaking Kindly!
では言葉のダイエットでも、優しい言葉のダイエットというものがあるとすれば、「優しい言葉だけを使うことによって一ヶ月に１０人も友達を作ることができた。」と言ったところでしょうか。
The Praise Diet – Only Speak About What You Can Praise!
賛美のダイエットといえば、「賛美ができることだけ、賛美の言葉だけを述べる。」ということになるでしょう。
Paul was onto this. He said,
パウロはちょうどこれにあてはまることを言っています。
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:6
いつも、塩で味つけられた、やさしい言葉を使いなさい。そうすれば、ひとりびとりに対してどう答えるべきか、わかるであろう。コロサイの信徒への手紙4:6
We know what he means by having words full of grace, but what does he mean by ‘seasoned with salt’?
優しい言葉を使うということがどういうことか、もうわかると思います。しかし、塩で味つけられた言葉というのはどういうことでしょうか？
What does salt do?
ここで、塩がどういう働きをするのか考えてみましょう。
* Salt adds flavour.
塩は味をつけます。
It brings out the best in the food.
食材の旨味をひきだします。
That’s what our conversation should do.
私たちの会話・言葉もまさにそのようにあるべきだということです。
Our conversation should add flavour and interest, and bring out the best in us.
私たちの会話は味と興味を加え、私たちの最善を引き出すべきです。
* Salt heals.
塩は癒します。
So should our conversation.
私たちの会話も塩のように癒しの効果をもつべきです。
Our words should bring healing to those we speak to.
私たちの言葉は話す相手に癒しをもたらすべきです。
Our words should make us peacemakers.
私たちの言葉は平和をもたらすべきです。
Our words should bring reconciliation.
私たちの言葉は和解をもたらすべきです。
* Salt preserves.
塩は保存します。
So should our words.
私たちの言葉も保つ効果を持つべきです。
Our words should preserve our relationships, making them long-lasting and healthy.
私たちの言葉は長く続く健全な人間関係を保つべきです。
Again, Jesus said,
イエスは繰り返しこう言っています。
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Luke 6:45
善人は良い心の倉から良い物を取り出し。悪人は悪い倉から悪い物を取り出す。心からあふれ出ることを、口が語るものである。 ルカによる福音書6:45
If we only speak good things but we still harbour ugliness in our hearts, then we’re just being hypocritical and people will see through that.
いくら私たちが言葉で良いことを言っていても、心の中では醜い気持ちを持っていたとしたら
、それは偽善的な行為であるということにしか過ぎず、他の人々には醜い気持ちは見透かされてしまいます。
So the key is to have our hearts right.
ですから、肝心なことは正しい心を持つということです。
Jesus doesn’t say ‘the mouth speaks despite what’s going on in the heart’.
イエスは「心で思っていることとは関係なく、口は語る」とは言っていません。
The mouth speaks the overflow of our hearts.
「心からあふれ出ることを、口が語る」と言っています。
So how do we get our hearts right?
ではどのようにして心を正しくするのでしょうか？
Of course, this takes us to the heart of the gospel.
もちろん、それは福音によってという結論にいつもたどり着きますが。
Through the redeeming work of Jesus on the cross and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, God does what he promised He would do long ago:
イエスの十字架での贖いのはたらきと私たちの心を清める聖霊のはたらきを通して、神はずっと前に約束されたことをなさいます：
He takes away our hearts of stone and replaces them with hearts of flesh.
それは神が私たちの石のような心を取り去り、新しい心と取り替えてくださるということです。
Likewise God promised that when the Holy Spirit comes, He would write His laws on our hearts.
聖霊が降りてくるとき、神の掟を私たちの心に刻むと神が約束したように。
We wouldn’t have to remember a long list of do’s and don’t’s.
しないといけないことややらないでいいことなどというリストに掲げるようなことではありません。
His law would be in our new hearts and in our transformed minds.
神の掟は私たちの新しい、生まれ変わった心に定められるべきなのです。
This calls us to live intimately with God, to be in step with His Spirit, seeking to be constantly re-filled by His Spirit.
そうするには、神と親密な関わりを持つこと、常に御霊に満たされることを求め、御霊と一致していること、御霊と一緒であることが必要です。
Paul gives us some really good advice as we do this. He says,
パウロはこのことにおいて私たちにとても良いアドバイスをくれました。
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8
最後に、兄弟たちよ。すべて真実なこと、すべて尊ぶべきこと、すべて正しいこと、すべて純真なこと、すべて愛すべきこと、すべてほまれあること、また徳といわれるもの、称賛に値するものがあれば、それらのものを心にとめなさい。フィリピの信徒への手紙4:8
This is a practical application of a spiritual truth.
聖霊の真実についての実に実用的なアドバイスだと思います。
Don’t watch movies where people swear, blaspheme, get shot in the head and romp around in their underwear.
人々が汚い暴言を履いていたり、神への冒涜があったり、頭に弾丸が打たれるような襲撃シーンがあったり、下着で戯れているようなシーンがあったりするような映画は見ないでください。
Don’t listen to music that celebrates an unholy lifestyle.
聖さがどこにもないようなライフスタイルを讃える音楽を聞くのはやめましょう。
Don’t involve yourself in art or hobbies or passions that don’t edify.
何の教えにもならない、芸術や趣味、何かに情熱を持つことはやめましょう。
But rather immerse yourself in things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy.
代わりに、本当のこと、真実で、立派で、正しく、清い、愛すべき、賞賛に値する、優れた、かけがえのないものに没頭しましょう。
Because if you do that, your speech will be like that, too. Pray.
そう言ったものに没頭し、浸れば、あなたの言葉もそのように、真実で、立派で、正しく、清い、愛すべき、賞賛に値する、優れた、かけがえのない言葉になるでしょう。
Mini-sermon #3 God’s Word
神の御言葉
Though I’ve known many of you for a long time, some of you may not know that my professional background is not in Christian ministry.
あなた方のことを長い間知っていても、クリスチャン宣教師以外の、私の職歴を知っている人は少ないでしょう。
My professional background is in linguistics.
私は言語学を専攻しました。
Linguistics is the study of language.
言語学は言語を学ぶということです。
I’ve always been fascinated with words and language and when I went to university and discovered there was such a thing as linguistics, I was really excited.
私は昔から常に言葉と言語に興味を持っていました。そして大学に入った時に言語学というものがあることを知った時は本当に興奮を覚えました。
(I was even more excited when I found out a few years later that you could actually use linguistics to get a job.
さらに、その数年後に、実際に言語学を活用できる仕事があるとわかった時にはもっと興奮しました。
I had up until that time always thought it was interesting but otherwise useless.
そのことがわかるまでは、言語学は興味深いけれど、それで仕事につけなければ意味はないなと思っていました。)
But based very much on Jesus’ teaching that words are the overflow of the heart, I was keen to learn all I could about how children learn language, about sociolinguistics, language universals, semantics (meaning), syntax (grammar) and why words can be so beautiful and so damaging.
言葉は溢れる心のようであるというイエスの教えのように、当時私は言葉を学ぶことにとても興味を惹かれて、子供がどのようにして語学を習得するのか、社会言語学、世界共通語、意味論、文法、なぜ言葉は美しいのか、または破壊的なのかなど、学べることは全て学びました。
I was employed by Kumon to design and write an English language learning program from kindergarten years up to university level.
くもん教育研究会に勤め、幼稚園児から大学生のレベルまでの英語教材の開発に携わりました。
My task was very broad.
当時の私の仕事はとても幅広いものでした。
At one end, I was teaching kids how to read using phonics and other methods, and at the other end, I was preparing study units based on the writings of Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare and many other great writers.
一方で、子供達にフォニックスやその他の方式を使って読み方を教えたり、また一方で、オスカーワイルドやチャールズディキンズ、ウイリアムウイリアムシェークスピア、その他の有名な作家の書を元にした単元を書いていました。
This was a five year project and amidst all the study and review and analyses of all the great writings,do you know the most important discovery I made in that time?:
それは５年間にも渡るプロジェクトで、勉強と復習、有名な著書の文体を分析するという項目の中で、私がその当時、一番重要だと感じたこと、発見したことは何だったかわかりますか？
The Word of God is amazing.
神の御言葉はすばらしいということです。
The great writers were great!
有名な作家は素晴らしい。当然のことです。
They deserve their place in English literature.
英文学において有名な作家たちが認められるのは当然のことです。
But they have nothing on God.
しかし、彼らは神の足元にも及びません。
The Word of God stands far apart from any other work of literature.
神の言葉は、どんな文学よりかけ離れているのです。
It’s not just that some of the writing of David and Isaiah and Paul is some of the most beautiful and rich writing you’ll ever see.
聖書の中の一部の書物、例えばダビデ書やイザヤ書、パウロのように描写に優れている書物のことだけを言っているのではありません。
It’s not just that it was written over a 1,500 year period by over 40 different writers from all walks of life, on three continents, in three different languages, and that all their writings are in perfect harmony and mesh together to bring the whole good news of God’s plan of salvation in a stunning crescendo in the pages of the New Testament.
１５００年前に書かれ、４０人以上の違う作家によって、３大陸にもまたがって、調和され、融合され、新約聖書の中で福音となって神の救済を強調した書物であるからというだけのことではありません。
There’s more to it than that!
それ以上のことがあります。
It’s the authority of the Word.

Nowhere else in credible literature will you find these words:
次のような説得力のある文学は他では見ることができません。
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Genesis 1:1,2
はじめに神は天と地とを創造された。地は形なく、むなしく、やみが淵のおもてにあり、神の霊が水のおもてをおおっていた。創世記1:1,2
And God spoke all these words:
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:1-3
神はこのすべての言葉を語って言われた。「わたしはあなたの神、主であって、あなたをエジプトの地、奴隷の家から導き出した者である。あなたはわたしのほかに、なにものをも神としてはならない。 出エジプト記20:1-3
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. Psalm 51:17
神の受けられるいけにえは砕けた魂です。神よ、あなたは砕けた悔いた心をかろしめられません。詩篇51:17
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
わたしは道であり、真理であり、命である。だれでもわたしによらないでは、父のみもとに行くことはできない。 ヨハネによる福音書14:6
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. Revelation 20:11,12
また見ていると、大きな白い御座があり、そこにいますかたがあった。天も地も御顔の前から逃げ去って、あとかたもなくなった。また、死んでいた者が、大いなる者も小さき者も共に、御座の前に立っているのが見えた。かずかずの書物が開かれたが、もう一つの書物が開かれた。これはいのちの書であった。死人はそのしわざに応じ、この書物に書かれていることにしたがって、さばかれた。 ヨハネの黙示録20:11,12
No other books of literature speak like this. このように書かれている文献は他では見ることができません。
None of them proclaim a resurrected saviour or a Holy Spirit outpouring; none present a true knowledge of God, or contain wave after wave of prophecy and fulfilment.
よみがえった救い主や聖霊の注ぎを宣言している本は他にありません。神の真の知識を提示したり、次から次へと預言と成就が含まれているものもありません。
Is it any wonder that we are taught to fear this holy God, and to hold His Word in the highest esteem?
聖なる神を怖れよと教わり、神の言葉を尊重しなさいと言われるわけがわかりましたでしょうか？
We’ve been talking about words today.
今日は言葉のことについて話してきました。
God our Father’s words are holy, righteous and true.
父である神の言葉は聖であり、正しく、真実です。
He is not capable of lying.
神は嘘をつきません。
We are His children, and as His children we are called to take on the mind of Christ and the tongue of Christ and to speak as God speaks – words that are holy and righteous and true.
私たちが神の子供であるように、そして神のように私たちはキリストの心とキリストの舌を見に着け、神が語るように語ること、つまり聖なる正しい真実な言葉を語るように召されています。
Words that never lie.
決して嘘をつかない言葉。
That’s pray that it would be so.
それは、そうでありますようにというあなたの祈りです。
