Today’s Advent reading was from Isaiah 40:1-11. This passage of scripture is often read during Advent because it captures so well the essence of the Advent message and teaches us how to prepare our hearts to receive the great Christmas miracle.

The first 2 verses are an introduction and they bring words of comfort. This is an important introduction for a people, then and now, who are weary from the sin, and the foolishness and the pressures of this world. If you are feeling, or have ever felt insecure about yourself, weary from your toil, unsure about your future, doubtful about your faith, or afraid about anything in your life, don’t worry. Be comforted. There’s really good news coming.

Verses 3-5 encourage us to get ready for this good news. Don’t miss it because you weren’t prepared in your heart to hear it! We’re told to

We can apply this figurative language to our lives without too much trouble. Maybe we can paraphrase it like this:

I’m going to stop being distracted by all the other things going on at this time of year and focus on God. I want to give Him my undivided attention. I’m going to work to fill in any lack of knowledge I have about God. With God’s help, I’m going to forgive those that I’m secretly holding a grudge against, and I’m going to stop giving in to sin, and I’m going to stop making excuses for any lack of devotion to God in my life. In short, I’m going to repent. Because humbly and sincerely repenting is the only way to get our hearts ready for God.
毎年この時期になるとしなくてはいけないことに気を紛らわされることなく、神に焦点を当てよう。神に全神経を集中させたいのです。神についてまだ欠けている知識を増やしていきたい。神の助けをかりて、秘かに恨みを抱いている人を赦そう。そして、罪に屈することはやめて、神への献身が足りない言い訳をするのはやめよう。とにかく、悔い改めよう。へりくだって心から悔い改めることが、私たちの心を神のために準備する唯一の方法だから。
Isaiah’s words here are not only personal though. They are also communal. Most of the actions here are actually God’s work, not ours. There is a sense here that with the coming of Christ, nothing will be hidden. Everything will be exposed. This Christ will be for all people and will have effect in all circumstances. Through Him, all people will be equal before God. The humble will be exalted and the proud will be humbled. With the coming of Christ comes a great change in the way we see ourselves, our world, and our God. Get ready for this change of heart that God will bring.

There is an urgency and an importance to this. Remember the parable of the ten bridesmaids? While five of them were waiting for the bridegroom, the oil in their lamps ran out and they had to go and get some more. The other five had brought enough to last the whole night. The bridegroom returned while the five were still away, and they were not allowed in to the wedding feast. What had those bridesmaids done to deserve such rejection? They didn’t seem to be the filthy scum that Daryl was speaking about last week. Their only error was simply not being ready.

- Don’t be deceived

As we ready our hearts for the Christmas miracle and for the changes that Jesus brings if we open our hearts to Him, don’t be fooled by the promises of the world. Don’t be deceived by the glory of man, because the glory of man is a lie. Look at these people:

These people are or were glorious in the world. They achieved great things. Many have legendary status. They are ‘gods’ in their field. But I’ve read every one of their biographies and I will tell you that away from the spotlight, their lives read like a tragedy. I wouldn’t want to trade places with any of them. Every one of them had awful, sin-plagued and deeply troubled lives. The glory of man is like a flower of the field which withers and falls. Don’t be deceived by it.

Keep your eyes on the glory of God: the wonder of creation; the birth, death and resurrection of Christ; the presence of the Holy Spirit; the Word of God; and the hope of eternal life to come.
神の栄光に目を向けましょう：創造の素晴らしさ、キリストの誕生と死と復活、聖霊のご臨在、神の御言葉、永遠の命の希望

Look at the lives of the prophets Samuel, Isaiah, and Daniel. Their glory never faded because their glory was in God and in God alone. Isaiah assures us that the glory of man wilts like a flower but the glory of our God endures forever.

As we ready our hearts for the Christmas miracle and for the changes that Jesus brings, don’t look to the glory of the world, look to the glory of God who endures forever.

- Share the good news
良い知らせをわかちあう
Sharing the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ can be scary to many people. It doesn’t need to be. Listen to what Isaiah writes:
イエス・キリストの福音の良い知らせをわかちあうことは、勇気の要ることだと思う人がたくさんいることでしょう。そうではないのです。イザヤの言葉を聞いてください：
The good news is… good news. It’s nothing to be afraid of or ashamed of. It’s to be proclaimed and shared. Be gentle, respectful, bold and loving in doing this. If people don’t want to hear it, move on. If they listen, don’t share just Biblical history, but share your history, too. Share your biography with people. Tell people what God has done at Christmastime, and share with people what God has done in your life at this time, too.
良い知らせは、、、良い知らせなのです。恐れることも恥ずかしいと思うこともありません。宣べ伝えられ、わかちあうべきものです。優しく、敬意を表し、大胆に、愛情深く語りましょう。聞きたくないというのであれば、次に進みましょう。聞いてくれる人がいれば、聖書の歴史をわかちあうだけでなく、あなたの経験もわかちあいましょう。あなたの伝記を人とわかちあいましょう。クリスマスに神が何をなさったかを語り、あなたの人生に神が何をなさったかもわかちあいましょう。
Isaiah gives us some of his own tips on this. Share the good news of the Christmas miracle, he says, in word, share it in song, share it in deed. In a world that insists on saying ‘happy holidays’ instead of ‘merry Christmas’, let people know that you will be celebrating Christmas and, if it’s timely, share with them why.

Isaiah finished this section of his writing with more words of comfort. This whole section is bracketed by words of comfort.

As you get your heart ready for the Christmas miracle and for the blessed changes that Jesus brings, hold on to this image. It reveals the truth of God’s tender love for you. He tends your life, He gathers you, He carries you close to His heart, and He gently leads you. You can trust in His unfailing love.
(わたしはあなたのいつくしみに信頼し)
No more fear or sorrow or shame or confusion or doubt. This is a glory that the world cannot fake, and that God loves to provide.
クリスマスの奇跡とイエスがもたらす恵みの変化にあなたの心を準備するにあたり、このイメージをしっかりと描いてみてください。あなたへの神の慈愛が真実であることを示しています。神はあなたの人生を養ってくださいます。あなたをいだき、そのふところに入れて携えてゆき、やさしく導かれます。もう恐れることも、悲しむことも、恥じることも、混乱することも、疑うこともありません。これがこの世には偽造できない栄光、神がぜひとも与えたいと願って’おられる栄光なのです。
