Welcome to the summer of Psalms! Over the next five or six weeks we’re going to be looking at the Psalms in ways which will comfort us, challenge us, change us, strengthen us and in ways which will uplift us.

これからの５、６週間の間は詩編をリラックスしながら、自分を律しながら、変化させられ、強められるように読んでみていきましょう。
Today we begin by looking at the famous Psalm 23.
今日は詩編のなかでも有名な２３編から始めていきましょう。
It’s easy for us to lose the beauty and power of passages and verses which become very familiar to us yet it is well worth the effort to rediscover the truths that they contain.
読み慣れてしまっていて、節や句の、美しさを見失いがちですが、そこには見つけ出す価値のある真実が書かれています。
1. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.
主はわたしの牧者であって、わたしには乏しいことがない。
２３篇１節
As a kid, I could never understand this verse.
子どもの時の私は、この節に書かれている事が理解できませんでした。
If God is our shepherd, why wouldn’t we want Him?
もし、神が羊飼いなら、羊である私たちが神を必要としない事なんてあるのだろうか？と思いました。
Isn’t the whole idea of the Bible that we need and want God in our lives?
神が私達の人生にとって必要であるということが全てではないのか？とも、思いました。
A look at some other translations helps us to understand what the Psalmist means.
詩編の作者が意味していることを、わかりやすく解説してくれている訳文をみてみましょう。
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. (NIV)
主は私の羊飼い。私は乏しいことがない。
The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need. (GNT)
主は羊飼い、わたしには何も欠けることがない。
God, my shepherd! I don’t need a thing. (MSG)
神よ、私の羊飼いよ！私は何一つ必要としない。
These versions help us to understand that it’s not God that we don’t want, it’s things other than God that we don’t want.
これらの文では、私たちが欲しいものは神ではなく、それは、私達が欲しくもないものだといっているのです。
But without wanting to get caught up in details, there’s something about the earlier translations that, despite them being a bit confusing at first, is actually more wonderful once you understand the meaning.
しかし細かいことにとらわれず、先ほどの解釈に注目しましょう。それは、最初は少し困惑しましたが、理解する事ができれば素晴らしい解釈だからです。
You see, the later translations talk about our needs being met, but the earlier translations talk about our wants being met.
もうおわかりのように、後の翻訳では私達の必要が満たされる事が書かれています。しかし、先に述べられた訳では私達の欲しいものが満たされるという風に書かれています。
It’s not just that with God as our shepherd we don’t lack anything.
単に、神とともにいれば私達に欠けているものはなにもないとは書かれていません。
That’s good. But with God as our shepherd we are so well provided for that there isn’t even anything that we feel we want.
これは良いと思います。しかし、私達は羊飼いである神によって、もうほかに欲しいものなんて考えつかない程、たくさんのものがすでに備えられているのです。
Everything we want has been provided, so the only thing left for us to want more of is God Himself. This is what contentment with God the shepherd should be like.
何でも全てが備えられていて、唯一私達がもっと必要としなければいけないのは神様だけなのです。これが、神の安堵を得た「神を羊飼いとする生き方」を表しているのです。
God promises that when He is our shepherd we shall not want for anything.
神が私たちの羊飼いなら私たちは乏しいことがないと約束されています。
So when we find ourselves ‘in want’ it means one of two things:
ですから、もし私達が何かを「欲しい」と感じた時は、次の二つの事がおこっていると考えられます。
* What we desire is something that is not right for us, or
私たちの願っているものが私たちにふさわしくない
* What we desire, God will surely provide.
私たちの願っているものを神はたしかに備えてくださる
Psalm 37:4 says Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
詩篇37:4主によって喜びをなせ。主はあなたの心の願いをかなえられる。
Be comforted in this and actively delight in the Lord.
安心してください。そして神様をもっと賛美しましょう。
2. He makes me lie down in green pastures,
主はわたしを緑の牧場に伏させ
２３篇２節
God tells us that we need to be still before Him to know Him.
神様はこういいます。神を知る為には、神の前で静かにしていなさい。
We don’t just hit the pause button, we hit the stop button. We lie down at his feet and listen carefully like Mary did.
この意味は、ただ一時停止するだけではなく、全てをやめ、静止状態になることです。私達はマリアがそうしたように、神様の足下にひれ伏し、注意深く彼の声を聞くのです。
God wants us to lie down and find our rest in His provision.
神様は、私達に、「全てをやめ、彼の足の下にひれ伏し、安心して神が備えて下さるのを待て。」と言ってくださっているのです。
He leads me beside quiet waters, いこいのみぎわに伴われる ２３編２節
Quiet waters bring refreshment. 静かに流れる水は癒してくれます。
He restores my soul. 主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ ２３編２節
Restoration, like renewal, is a key concept throughout the Bible. God renews, re-creates us, regenerates us today so that we can serve Him into the future.
良き状態に戻すこと、回復することは、新しくなることと同様です。良き状態に回復することは聖書に書かれている重要なカギとなります。今の時代でもいつでも、神は新しくしてくださいます。再び創造してくださいます。更正させてくださいます。ですから、私達は未来に向かって神様を崇拝する事が出来るのです。
When we bring ourselves under the shepherd’s protection, we find rest, refreshment and restoration.
私達が羊飼いに守られたとき、最初は安らぎを感じ、生まれ変わった感じを受け、そしてついには癒されるのです。
Rest – from the weariness/hardships of our hard lives. Rest from the past.
憩い – 苦しい生活の疲れ・苦労からの憩い。過去からの憩い。
Rest from physical exhaustion, rest from mental anguish, rest from spiritual
temptation, rest from emotional ache.
私達は、肉体的な疲労から安らぎを得て、精神的な苦悩から安らぎを得て、霊的な誘惑から安らぎを得る。そして感情の乱れからも安らぎも得ることができます。
Refreshment – the receiving of something new. Refreshment that affects us now.
一新 – 何か新しいものを受ける。今の私たちに影響を及ぼす一新。
We find refreshment in quiet times, consuming spiritual food and drink.
私達は静かな時間を持った時に疲れが癒されます。それはまるで、霊的な食べ物と飲み物を体に取り入れるような感じです。
We find it in personal worship and in fellowship with others.
一人での礼拝でも、みんなと礼拝している時でも同じことがおこります。
Restoration – the re-creation of our souls and minds for future living.
回復 – これからの私たちの心と魂の再生
The rest of God affects our past, present and future.
神様との休息は私達の過去、現在、そして未来に影響を与えます。
3. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
み名のためにわたしを正しい道に導かれる。
２３篇３節
It’s interesting that the reason God gives for guiding us in the paths of righteousness is for His sake. It’s not about us!
実はとても興味深い事ですが、神様は私達を、神ご自身のために義の道に導いておられます。
私達のために義の道に導いてくれているのではなく、神様のためにです。
Our righteousness reflects Him. We represent Him. He is glorified when we live righteously.
私たちの義は神を省みます。私たちは神を表します。私たちが正しく生きるとき神に栄光を帰します。
This has deep implications. このことには隠された意味があります。
There is a tendency in the Christian world to divide Christ’s teachings into two categories:
クリスチャンの世界ではキリストの教えは次の二つの教えにあてはまる傾向があるようです。
General teachings about righteousness, virtues, love etc, and
義、美徳、愛などのついての一般的な教え
‘Spiritual’ teachings about Jesus Himself as the Son of God and the Saviour and the need to have faith in Him.
イエス自身が神の御子であり、救い主であるという霊的な教えとイエスを信仰をする必 要があること
We see this division very clearly in Japan in ‘Christian’ schools and ‘Christian’ hospitals and other ‘Christian’ organisations (YMCA) which continue to profess adherence to Christian principles but no longer worship or profess Jesus as the Son of God.
このことは次のような分野ではっきりと見る事ができます。クリスチャン系の学校とクリスチャン系の病院、そしてYMCAなどの他の組織。クリスチャンとしての原則に忠実にその生計をたてていますが、今となってはイエス様を神の子として賛美することを忘れてしまっています。
But Jesus made it very clear that the two are inseparable.
しかし、さっき挙げた二つの項目はイエス様がとてもはっきりと切り離す事のできないことだと示しておられます。
We can’t have Christian principles without Christ.
クリスチャンとしての原則はキリストなしでは成り立ちません。
Otherwise it’s just morality.
なぜかというと、それはただの道徳、モラルになってしまうからです。
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” (Mat 5:44,45)
しかし、わたしはあなたがたに言う。敵を愛し、迫害する者のために祈れ。こうして、天にいますあなたがたの父の子となるためである。マタイによる福音書5:44,45
In much the same way, there is a direct and necessary connection between the paths of righteousness we choose for our lives and our faith in God.
このことと同じように、私達が生活のなかでする義の選択と神への信仰は直接的な親密なつながりがあります。
We can’t choose God’s paths but somehow push aside God’s presence or involvement on those paths.
神の存在やかかわりを押しのけて神の道を選ぶことはできません。
We walk those paths of righteousness with God.
私たちは神とともに義の道を歩きます。
4. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
たといわたしは死の陰の谷を歩むとも、わざわいを恐れません。あなたがわたしと共におられるからです。
２３編４節
Earlier this week a number of us attended Keiko-san’s wake and funeral and I want to sincerely thank all of you who did come for coming.
今週の頭に、何人かの教会の方々が啓子さんの葬儀に参列されました。そして、この場で、来ていただいた方々にお礼をいいたいと思います。ありがとうございました。
Christian funerals are quite beautiful.
クリスチャンの葬儀はとても美しく、すばらしいものです。
They are powerful testimonies of what we believe in Christ and it was wonderful to have the physical presence of church members there to honour Keiko-san and to stand for Christ.
葬儀そのものが、神様を信じるという力強い証言でした。そして、啓子さんに敬意を払い、キリストの前に立つという箕面国際教会の人々の、そこでの存在感は素晴らしいものでした。
The truth and the power of this verse probably stands out no clearer than at a funeral.
２３編４節で言われている真実と力の教えが、葬儀では、はっきりと表れていたと思います。
Even in the valley of the shadow of death, there is no fear; but rather God’s presence and protection and comfort.
たとえ死の陰の谷にいたとしても、わざわいを恐れず、神の臨在と守り、そして慰めを感じるのです。
Death scares a lot of people. And if you don’t know God, that’s understandable.
たくさんの人々は死を恐れます。そして、あなたが神を知らないとすれば当然のことでしょう。
Yet those who know God see death differently. In death, as the Psalmist says, we fear no evil because even in death God is with us,
しかし神を知っている者は死を違った目で見ます。詩篇の作者が言うように、死においても神は私たちとともにおられるので、私たちはわざわいを恐れません。
and those who know God, know that God says we have nothing to fear from the first death because eternal life follows it.
そして神を知っている人たちには、最初の死を恐れる事はないと神が言っています。なぜなら永遠の命が私達に注がれるからです。
It’s the second death that we should fear.
私達が本当に恐れなければならないのは第二の死、永遠の命がもらえないことなのです。
your rod and your staff, they comfort me
あなたのむちと、あなたのつえはわたしを慰めます。
２３編４節
The rod is an instrument of authority, the staff is an instrument of support.
むちは権威の道具、杖は支えの道具です。
We have peace in knowing that God’s words of comfort have authority (they are not just poetry) and that God is willing and able to support us in our times of crises.
単なる美しい言葉ではなく、神のこのような、権力と慰めのある言葉は、私達に平安を与えてくれます。神は私達がどんな危機に陥ってもその度に惜しみなく応援して、助けてくれます。
5. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
あなたはわたしの敵の前で、わたしの前に宴を設け、わたしのこうべに油をそそがれる。わたしの杯はあふれます。
２３編５節
Honoured guests at a meal had their heads anointed with oil.
名誉ある客人は食卓でそのこうべに油をそそがれたとあります。
Kings had their heads anointed with oil at their coronations.
当時、王達は即位式でこうべに油をそそがれました。
Oil also symbolises consecration (making holy). Oil also symbolises the Holy Spirit. As Christians we are to understand that God has anointed us with his Holy Spirit.
油はまた聖別（聖なる者とすること）の象徴で、聖霊の象徴でもあります。クリスチャンである私たちは神が私たちに聖霊を注いでくださっていることを理解しましょう。
There is an interesting parallel between this NT understanding and this verse from the Psalms.
興味深い類似が新約聖書の解釈と詩篇５節のなかにあります。
It says here in Psalm 23 that our head is anointed with oil and as a result our cup overflows.
詩篇２３篇では、「わたしのこうべに油をそそがれる。わたしの杯はあふれる。」とあります。
Jesus spoke of us being anointed with the Holy Spirit and from us would flow streams of living water, which was the Holy Spirit.
イエスは私達に聖霊が注がれるという話をしました。クリスチャンである私達からは聖霊という生きた水が流れ出すのです。
Remember that every book of the Old Testament points to Christ and every teaching in the Old Testament finds its fulfillment in Christ.
旧約聖書のなかのそれぞれの書ではキリストのことが書かれており、あらゆる旧約聖書の教えのなかでキリストのことがよく表現されています。
So where the Old Testament writers were writing a spiritual truth on one plane – in this case the anointing of authority for a physical kingship – the New Testament writers show how it projects a greater truth in Christ where the oil of the Holy Spirit marks (or seals) each of us as royalty – co-heirs of Christ – in the house of God.
旧約聖書で書かれている霊的な真実というのは一つの例で、この場合は王位につくという権威が注がれたということ。そして、新約聖書では、聖霊という油で私達クリスチャンは忠誠の印がなされ、神の家でキリストとの共同相続人として、キリストの真実が私達の上に繁栄されているということが書かれています。
Amazing! Think about then how we should live our lives!
なんという素晴らしいことでしょうか！このことを考えてください。私達がどのように生きれば良いのか考えください！
6. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
わたしの生きているかぎりは必ず恵みといつくしみとが伴うでしょう。わたしはとこしえに主の宮に住むでしょう。
２３篇６節
Recently I have been reading the book of Deuteronomy and it’s fascinating to read how God laid out the law for the Israelites.
最近、わたしは申命記を読んでいます。そこにはイスラエル人達に神がどのように法をさだめたかが非常に興味深く書かれています。
He did it by pronouncing a series of curses for disobedience and a series of blessings for obedience. (And obedience was always a fruit of love.)
神はイスラエル人達の従順（従順は愛の賜物です）と不従順をまるで呪いの言葉のように挙げながら法を定めていったのです。
I suspect many Christians today are not entirely comfortable with this idea of God cursing us for failing to obey.
こんにちのクリスチャンにとってはその不従順を神様にののしられるなんていうことは、とても不快なことだと思います。
But how can we seriously ask God to bless us when we are serving faithfully but not expect to be disciplined when we are living waywardly?
しかし、わたしたちが誠実ではあるが、試練を受けるのが嫌なとき、または強情でわがままな時、そんな時にどうやって神様に真剣にお願いすることができるでしょうか？
Be warned. Jesus said,
忠告されなさい。イエス様がこう言われました。
“Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”
Matthew 7:22
その日には、多くの者が、わたしにむかって『主よ、主よ、わたしたちはあなたの名によって預言したではありませんか。また、あなたの名によって悪霊を追い出し、あなたの名によって多くの力あるわざを行ったではありませんか』と言うであろう。
マタイによる福音書7:22
But for those who are faithful,
しかし、誠実である人たちに伝えます。
There are unlimited blessings that flow from having the LORD as our shepherd.
主が私たちの羊飼いであることから限りない祝福を受けるのです。
