Three Revelations 3

The Advent/Christmas season is so much more than remembering the birth of Christ 2000 years ago. It’s about celebrating and participating in the coming of God’s Kingdom to the earth.

Today we’re going to look at three periods of this revelation of God – in which the Kingdom of God is revealed – in three short mini-sermons.
We find the first revelation in Isaiah 52:7-10

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
8 Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices; together they shout for joy.
When the Lord returns to Zion, they will see it with their own eyes.
9 Burst into songs of joy together, you ruins of Jerusalem,
for the Lord has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 The Lord will lay bare his holy arm in the sight of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God.
Isaiah 52:7-10/

This image of the beautiful feet running with good news refers back to the time of the exile when the messengers returned with the good news of God’s deliverance from captivity. “Hey guys! We’ve been set free! We’re finally free from captivity!” God’s people had been released from their bondage.
But this reading is much more than that. It is prophetic in that this deliverance from captivity prefigures Jesus delivering us from sin.

And so this passage is essentially all about the beauty and the joy and the comfort and the power of God’s salvation. This prophecy looks forward 600 years to what is 2000 years in our past[image], when Jesus was born and brought salvation to all people through his death and resurrection. It’s in Jesus that we truly see the salvation of our God throughout the earth. It’s in Jesus that we “burst into songs of joy” and “lift up our voices and shout for joy”. It’s in Jesus that we have this climax of the good news.

So the Advent/Christmas season is a celebration and participation in the coming of God’s Kingdom in the past, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem and “the light shined in the darkness”.

Let’s sing about this with the song: Servant King

2. We find the second revelation of God – in which the Kingdom of God is revealed – in Joel 2:28-32 (and this is repeated in Acts 2:17-21 when it is fulfilled).

“And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
30 I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
32 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.
Joel 2:28-32/

In the first reading:, we saw God’s Kingdom revealed for a short time when Jesus came to the earth emptied of His glory. It was a time of salvation. That time has passed.
The fulfilment of this prophecy in Joel: marked the beginning of a new era in which God’s Kingdom would be revealed through the outpouring and workings of the Holy Spirit of Jesus. This would be a time of salvation and sanctification. A time of redemption and power.

No longer would God limit the work of His Spirit to a few select prophets, but rather He would pour His Spirit on “all those who call on the name of the Lord”. This ushered in an era when even the person of lowliest position could prophesy and see visions.
I want to encourage those of you who feel that the releasing of the supernatural – the workings of the Holy Spirit – are for a select few who have been specially chosen or learned or gifted – that you are wrong! You’re living in the past! That was the way of the Old Testament. That time has finished.
For those of you who are young, unlearned, lacking in confidence, quiet, old, feeling irrelevant or of little use to God or His church, I want you to understand that God wants you to dream dreams and to see visions and to prophesy. He has prepared the way for you to do this. God wants the common person – the humble and lowly – who call on the name of Jesus, to experience the revelation of God – the coming of the Kingdom of God – in the fullness of the Holy Spirit.
This takes us beyond salvation. Remember what I was saying last week?
Salvation was not the ultimate goal of Christ’s coming. The redemption won on the cross made possible the higher goal of Christ – that is, the filling of every believer with the Holy Spirit, and the shaping of every believer into His likeness.

So the Advent/Christmas season is not only a celebration and participation in the coming of God’s Kingdom – in the past – when Jesus was born in Bethlehem and “the light shined in the darkness”;
it’s also a celebration and participation in the coming of God’s Kingdom now – in the present – when the Holy Spirit is given to all who repent and are baptised into the name of Jesus.

Let’s sing for joy about this wonderful news, the song: I Believe in Jesus

3. There is a final revelation of God yet to come. We find it in Matthew 24:23-27:

23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.
26 “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
In the first reading:, we saw God’s Kingdom revealed for a short time when Jesus came to the earth emptied of His glory. It was a time of salvation.
In the second reading: we saw a new era in which God’s Kingdom is revealed through the outpouring and workings of the Holy Spirit. That’s now. This is a time of salvation and sanctification. A time of redemption and power.

In this third reading:, we see God’s Kingdom revealed at the end of days when Jesus returns in His full glory. Unlike the first two revelations, this will be a time of judgement, justice, full restoration, and eternal glory.

This is the essence and the fulfilment of what we believe. Paul says it very clearly in 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18:

For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

So the Advent/Christmas season is a celebration of three primary revelations of God:
It’s a celebration and participation in the coming of God’s Kingdom – in the past – when Jesus was born in Bethlehem and “the light shined in the darkness”;
it’s a celebration and participation in the coming of God’s Kingdom now – in the present – when the Holy Spirit is given to all who repent and are baptised into the name of Jesus;
and it’s also a celebration and participation in the Kingdom which is yet to come – in the future – when Jesus returns to take all those who remained faithful to Him home to be with Him forever.

There is a lot for us to celebrate and participate in at Christmas time. Let’s make the most of it and really enjoy this time.
