Want to be Happy? – Repent

Which face is the repentant face?
(Gloomy, stressed/frustrated/deliriously happy?)
Last week as we looked at the book of Hosea, we focussed on God’s
judgement, repentance and abundance.

Today I would like to focus more on repentance because I want us to be happy.
I want us to be a happy people, a happy church.
I don’t believe we can be truly happy until we know how to truly repent and have done so.
Why do I say this?
Because repentance is key to receiving the Kingdom of heaven and without the kingdom of heaven we will never know true joy.
Bill Johnson said: “Most Christians repent enough to get forgiven but not enough to see the Kingdom.” (Chapter 3 – top)
Remember, the kingdom of this world and the Kingdom of God are completely different and at odds with each other (actually, at war), despite often looking similar on the surface. And one of the first places we see a difference is in repentance from sin.
The Bible teaches us that sin is rebellion against God and requires repentance.
The world does not recognise sin, and certainly not as rebellion against God.
More so, here’s how the kingdom of the world views Christian repentance:
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
Psalm 51:17/
This is from scripture, so we can’t argue against this. They have a good point. But the worldly conclusion is often that this is harmful, negative and depressing.
And sometimes we Christians, in our manner of going about repentance, have given the world good reason to think so.
The problem isn’t the brokenness. Don’t misunderstand me. Hidden sin is the Achilles’ heel of the church today (3rd section “An About Face”, second paragraph) and we must root it out. Repentance means we come to God broken and contrite. But the problem is that sometimes we tend to stay that way, and that is not what repentance is all about.
Bill Johnson said: “Most Christians repent enough to get forgiven but not enough to see the Kingdom.”
How do we take our repentance to the next level so that we then see the Kingdom of God?
That’s what we’re going to look at today.
We know that repentance means more than just being sorry for sin. We know that it means doing an about face. Turning radically from sin to God. I believe already we know this.
What I want to emphasise this morning – and this is key – is that
repentance also involves changing your way of thinking.
It means having a transformed mind (Romans 12:2).
It means taking on the mind of Christ .
This is what takes us beyond forgiveness and brings us the healing from the brokenness.

This is where we leave behind impurity and take on purity. We leave behind doubt and we take on faith. We leave behind one kingdom (of the world), and we move in another Kingdom (of God).

What happens at this point is amazing and it is where we must live.
From repentance, we have purity, faith and Kingdom vision.
That is, the presence of God’s Kingdom fills our consciousness.

This means that the enemy’s attempts to lure us away with the visible treasures of the world are easily resisted because our hearts are aware of the presence of His Kingdom in our lives. (4th section “Co-laborers with Christ”, 1st paragraph)
As such, we partake in the Kingdom and become co-labourers of Christ in the Kingdom of God.
So the prayer “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done” becomes a reality to us and influences the words we speak and the words that we no longer speak, and the actions that we do and no longer desire to do.
This is all the fruit of true repentance.

The greatest sermon ever given…was not mine. I know that will be a shock to many of you but it’s true, it wasn’t. The greatest sermon ever given was by Jesus and it is known as the sermon on the mount. (Matthew 5) And it was basically about repentance. But at the same time it was about so much more than repentance.

Although this sermon might be familiar to you, I’m not just going to give it to you. Because there’s no fun in that. I’m only going to give you half of it. (Matthew 5: 3-10) And we’re going to play Mix n’ Match. Match the correct blessing to the beatitude (on the screen – take volunteers)
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit – for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn – for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek – for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness – for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful – for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart – for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers – for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness – for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The sermon on the mount is actually not so much about repentance as it is about receiving the Kingdom of heaven.
In it Jesus reveals the attitudes that help his followers to access His unseen world. As citizens of heaven, these attitudes are formed in us so that we might fully grasp all that His Kingdom has available.
The Beatitudes are actually the lenses that the Kingdom is seen through. Repentance involves taking on the mind of Christ revealed in these verses. (7th section “The Greatest Sermon”, 5th paragraph)
And these lead to happiness.

I know a lot of boring old Bible enthusiasts like myself will say, “Hang on a moment. These beatitudes are talking about blessings, not mere happiness. And blessings involve a lot more than just happiness. So we don’t really like the translation of the Living Bible and others which use the word happiness here”.

This is a good point and I think that essentially the boring old Bible enthusiasts are right. Except that blessings do actually bring true happiness, and sometimes we forget that!
And as this is a family service, I’d like to make a special application of the beatitudes for families.
So allow me to paraphrase the beatitudes. Here is Andrew’s version of the beatitudes for families:
• You’re going to be really happy if you know you really need God in your home because then you get the Kingdom of heaven right there in your living room.
• You’re going to be really happy if you are truly sorry to God and your family members for the bad things you’ve said and done because that’s when you find peace and rest in your home.
• You’re going to be really happy if you have a gentle spirit before God and others in your family because then people will be happy to share things with you.
• You’re going to be really happy if you have a passion in your heart to treat your family members well because then you’ll be really satisfied in your own heart.
• You’re going to be really happy if you don’t get angry with other family members even if they do something bad to you, that way, people won’t get angry with you when you do something bad to them.
• You’re going to be really happy if you only look at good books and good movies and good things on the internet and only think about good things because that will help you to see God in your home.
• You’re going to be really happy if you’re kind and peaceful with other family members because that’s how God’s children should be in the home.
• You’re going to be really happy even if you get a hard time for doing the right thing because God sees and He will reward you with things from His Kingdom.

Let me finish with a word to the adults.

Repentance, like the beatitudes, is not about law and it’s not even about reward for obedience.
It’s all about grace. We need to understand this. It gets deep and heavy here so listen carefully.

At the heart of our repentance is God’s unwarranted favour that is poured upon a humble heart before any acts of obedience are done.
(The acts of obedience will later confirm the integrity of the repentance.)
Under grace, the commandments of the Lord come fully equipped with the ability to perform them. Grace enables what it commands. And so Kingdom power is released in us upon repentance. (Section 7, last paragraph)
Finally, something I touched on earlier: Hidden sin is the Achilles’ heel of the church today and we must root it out.
Time of silent prayer.
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the sin in your life, and then
– turn from the sin,
– submit your whole life to God and

pray that God would truly change your whole way of thinking so that you can move from repentance, to have purity, faith and Kingdom vision.

(If God is leading you to confess sin with me or one of the other leaders as a part of that process, then be faithful to that in the prayer time at the end of the service.)
Which face is the repentant face? (Gloomy, stressed/frustrated/deliriously happy?)
