I don’t know if you have heard the news but researchers have recently found a fifth gospel. There have been many so-called gospels ‘found’ or ‘fabricated’ over the years (and dismissed for various reasons) but this one looks very, very promising. It’s still being assessed. But it looks set to be more widely read than the first four gospels.
5番目の福音があると言われています。
みなさんはご存知かどうか分かりませんが、最近の調べでは５番目の福音があると言われています。今までに発見されたと言われては様々な理由で却下された福音がいくつもがありましたが、この５番目の福音はとても有望なのです。それはまだ査定中ですが、初めの４つの福音よりもっと幅広く設定されているようです。
The first four gospels, of course, are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Today I would like to talk about living the gospel.
今日は生きている福音についてお話します。
Our primary focus for this year is discipleship and living the gospel is exactly what discipleship is all about.
今年の私たちの第一の焦点は弟子訓練で、福音に生きるということがまさに弟子訓練です。
The early church knew how to live the gospel. That is one reason why it grew so quickly. They lived their lives as though they really believed the gospel. They lived with conviction, zeal and a passion that was tangible. That’s what I want us to have.
初期の教会はどのようにして福音に生きるかを知っていました。だからとても早く成長した分けです。彼らは本当にその福音を信じ彼らの人生を送りました。彼らは明白に信念、熱意と情熱を持ち生きました。
Too many Christians today treat the gospel like fine china – only for special occasions; or like an ancient treasure displayed in a cabinet that you only talk about when someone asks.
今日ではあまりにも多くのクリスチャンはその福音を特別な行事のためにだけ使う繊細な食器のように、又は、キャビネットに飾ってあるようなアンティークの宝物のように、福音は誰かが尋ねた時だけ話すという扱いをしています。
There is only one ‘lost gospel’ and that is the one hidden away in the hearts of believers.
‘失われた福音’というものがあり、それはクリスチャンの心の中に隠された福音です。
We are the fifth gospel.
私たちは5番目の福音です
But we must understand what that means.
でも、私達はその意味を理解しなければなりません。
We’re not an addition to the four gospels – offering something that they don’t have. We’re certainly not some sort of modern amendment to the four gospels – as though they need modernisation or correction.
私達は４つの福音の付け足しではありません。それらに無い物を提供します。 私達はその４つの福音の付け足しをするのではなく、福音に必要な現代に見合ったものを提供します。
We are to be a living incarnation of the four gospels, in harmony with them, revealing them to a world that does not know God.
私たちは4つの福音と調和して、神を知らない世に示している福音の生きた生まれ変わりです。
The purpose of the gospels is made clear in
福音の目的はヨハネ20章31節で明らかにされています。

These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
しかしこれらのことが書かれたのは、イエスが神の子キリストであることを、あなた方が信じるため、また、あなた方を信じて、イエスの御名によっていのちを得るためである
The purpose of our lives should be the same:
私達の人生の目的も同じであるべきです
We live our lives in such a way that others may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing they may have life in his name.
イエスが神の子キリストであることを人が信じるため、また信じて、イエスの御名によっていのちを得るように私たちは生きるのです。
This is a good mission statement for our lives, isn’t it?
これは私達の人生にとって良い声明ですよね？
The gospel of Jesus is beautiful.
イエスの福音は美しいものです。
It’s powerful, it’s rich, it’s life-changing, it interacts with a sinful humanity but remains pure, it’s glorious just as it is and requires no glossy marketing to make it appealing.
この聖句は力強く、豊かで人生が変わります。この聖句は人間の罪深さに関係しますしかし純粋のまま現代にも通じる素晴らしい聖句です。
Our lives – the gospel we live out – are to be the same: beautiful, powerful, transformed, pure, glorious.
私たちの人生も同じようでなければなりません。 美しく、力強く、大きく変化し、純粋で光り輝くようでなければなりません。
Understanding this is incredibly wonderful and incredibly daunting at the same time to most believers.
このことを理解することは、ほとんどのクリスチャンにとって、ものすごく素晴らしいことであり、ものすごく圧倒されることでもあるのです。
It’s certainly an enormous challenge.
それは確かに大きな挑戦です。
What if our lives are not particularly beautiful, powerful, transformed, pure or glorious at the moment?
もし、私達の人生が特に美しくなく、力強くなく、大きく変化しなく、純粋でなく、光り輝きがないなら
Suddenly this concept of us being the fifth gospel looks very risky, feels awkward and could even be dangerous.
この私達が５番目の福音になる概念は非常に危なっかしく思われ、ぶざまで危険にさえ感じます。
But this doesn’t change the fact that most of our friends and acquaintances will never read the first four gospels, and that for most of our friends and acquaintances, we are the only gospel they will ever read.
だからと言って、私たちの友人や知人のほとんどが最初の4つの福音を読むことがないという事実には変わりがなく、私たちの友人や知人には、私たちが唯一の福音なのです。
So our challenge this year, is to become more Christlike – even in our weaknesses – especially in our weaknesses! We need to become visible witnesses for the One we claim is #1 in our lives.
だから私達の今年の課題は、もっとキリストのようになることです。私達は弱みの中でも神を私達の中に１番に置くことです。私達は自分達の人生で目に見える証人になる必要があります。
There are two extremes in being visible witnesses that I would like us to be aware of and to avoid.
私達が意識して避けてもらいたい２つの両極端な目に見える証人があります。
1. The morality police
道徳警察
Bobby Conway calls them ‘Gospel grenade-launching believers’.
ボビーコンウェイは彼らを’福音手榴弾を投げる信者達と呼びます’。
These believers feel it is their job to expose and condemn every sick part of the culture we live in.
このような人たちは私たちが住んでいるところの文化のあらゆる腐敗したところをさらけ出し、非難しなければならないと思っています。
But this only serves to further alienate non-Christians from anything that has to do with Jesus. It’s a real turn off.
しかしこのように警察みたいな信者達の言動はクリスチャンでない人達にとってキリスト教に関する意欲を無くさせてしまいます。
2. The apologisers
謝罪人
These believers feel it is their job to apologise for thousands of years of mistakes made by Christians.
このような人たちは、何千年にもわたるクリスチャンによる過ちを謝らなければいけないと思っています。
Everything from the Crusades to the Inquisitions to the Salem Witch trials to the church’s more recent moral failures and even for the glossy style of the new megachurches, is fair game.
今までにたくさんの事件がありました。例えば、十字軍、宗教裁判、セイラム魔女裁判、教会の道徳問題、そして近年の巨大な教会はコンサート会場化しています。
There’s no denying, believers over the centuries and the church have done some shameful things.
全く否定はしません。信者達は何世紀にも渡りその教会は恥じるべき事をしました。
The problem is that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.
問題は少しの知識は危険なことになります。
So when you get a bunch of zealous young bloggers with a little knowledge of history and almost no understanding of the gospels, their mantra becomes this: ‘If we’re just nice to people, and don’t judge anyone, and don’t offend anyone, then maybe they’ll start to see things from our perspective’.
だから、少しの歴史の知識で沢山の若い熱心なブロガーの束があれば、福音を理解し得ません。彼らのモットー（心がけているもの）はこのようになります。もし、私達がただ人々に良くし、
批判せず、誰も攻撃しないなら多分彼らは私達の視点から物事を見始めるかもしれません。
All this does is water down the power of the gospel to accommodate our culture’s tolerance-based morality.
これら全てのモットーは福音を弱くさせてしまいます。何でも寛容であれば良いというのは福音とは言えません。
The morality police and the apologisers need to understand the truth that the world is in sinful rebellion to God.
道徳警察と謝罪人は、この世は神に対して罪深い反逆にあるという真実を理解しないといけません。
Our world is, in a sense, on fire. The apologisers are squirting at it with a water pistol and the morality police are throwing fuel on it. And a lot of Christians are caught in the middle and don’t know what to do.
私達の世界は炎の上にあるような感覚です。謝罪人は水鉄砲で撃ちそして道徳警察はその上に焚き付ける物を投げています。そして多くのクリスチャンはその真ん中で捕えられていてどうして良いのか分からなくなっています。
Many feel guilty for not preaching the gospel, so just stay silent and try to keep out of the way. Others simply don’t know how to communicate their faith and live it out in a way that makes sense to a watching world.
多くの人々は福音を宣べ伝えていないので、罪悪感を感じ、ただ静かに居て邪魔にならないようにとします。その他の人達は単に彼らの信仰の交わり方を知らなかったり、世間を理にかなって見る方法が分からないでいます。
Yet when we live like Jesus – and this is our goal – we move beyond the printed gospel and begin to demonstrate the true spirit of the gospel.
私たちがイエスのように生きるなら-それが私たちの目標でもありますが-紙に書かれた福音を超えて、福音の真の精神を実行し始めます。
When we live like Jesus, the beauty, the power, the newness, the purity, and the glory of the gospel become evident in and through our lives.
私達がイエスのように生きる時、その美しさ、力、新しいこと、純真、そしてその福音の栄光は私達の人生の行き方を通してその福音の証拠となります。
To live as Jesus lived requires a mental and a spiritual transformation. This is a work of our will and it is a work of the Holy Spirit.
イエスが生きたように生きるということは、精神的、霊的に変わることが必要です。それは私たちの意志のはたらきであり、聖霊のはたらきです。
This begins today and is something we will be working on throughout the year as disciples of Christ.
これを今日から始めてそして私達はキリストの弟子であるようにこの一年を通して何かこの教会に神の働きをしましよう。
John Calvin said, “The gospel is not a doctrine of the tongue, but of life. It cannot be grasped by reason and memory only, but it is fully understood when it possesses the whole soul and penetrates to the inner recesses of the heart.”
ジョン カルビン曰く、福音は口で言う信条ではなく、生き方の信条です。道理や記憶だけによって把握されません。しかし、心全体を満たし、心の奥底にまで浸透するときに十分に理解されるのです。
