I like to write books.
私は文章を書くことが好きです。
And the honest truth is, I’ve written some very good books:)
実を言うと、私は良い本を今までに相当書いたと自分では思っています。
Unfortunately I haven’t written any great books.
しかし、不運なことに私は「傑作だ」と言える本を書いたことはありません。
I’m still working on it but alas nothing yet.
まだ頑張ってはいますが、悲しいかな傑作と言える境地にまでは達していません。
I’d like to ask you,

“What’s the greatest book you have ever read?” [Open question]
今まで読んだ本の中でいちばんすばらしい本は何ですか？
Samuel Coleridge (the great English writer of the early 1800s) once called the book of Romans,
サミュエルコールリッジ （1772‐1834; 英国の詩人・批評家）はかつてはローマ人への手紙を
“The most profound writing in existence of all time.”
今まで書かれた書の中で、もっとも意味深い書であると言いました。
Richard Halbertson (great Christian writer) wrote,
リチャード ハルバートソンは偉大なるクリスチャンの著者です。彼はこう書きました。
“In a very basic sense, western civilization is a by-product of Paul’s letter to the Romans. Nothing was written by man that had a greater impact on modern history.”
ある意味、パウロのローマ人への手紙は、西洋の文化にとって大いなる恩恵である。近代の歴史に影響を与えるような書は他には書かれなかった。
John Calvin wrote concerning Romans,
ジョンカルビンはローマ人への手紙に関してこのように書いています。
“If a man understands Romans he has a sure road open to help him understand the entire Bible.”
もしローマ人への手紙を理解することができたなら、人は聖書に書かれている全てを確実に理解することがにできるだろう。
Romans is the basic handbook for Christianity.
ローマ人への手紙はキリスト教の基本的な案内書です。
This one letter has helped to change history.
この一つの手紙は歴史を変えました。
Martin Luther started the Reformation because of the book of Romans.
マーティン・ルーサーはローマ人への手紙によって改革を始めました。
John Wesley started the Wesleyan revivals because of the book of Romans.
ジョン・ウェスリーは英国の神学者・伝道者ですが、ローマ人への手紙に影響されて独自のメソジスト運動を展開しました。
Augustine became a Christian because of the book of Romans.
アウグスティヌスはローマ人への手紙を読んでクリスチャンになりました。
I actually think there is a trilogy here: John – Acts – Romans.
ヨハネの福音書、使徒行伝、ローマ人への手紙は、見事な三部作になっていると思います。
These three books together form the very core of the Christian faith.
これらの三つの書はクリスチャンの信仰の中心核となります。
John: tells us about the life of Jesus.
ヨハネの福音書はイエスの生涯を私たちに教えてくれます。
Acts: tells us about the works of the Holy Spirit.
使徒行伝は聖霊の働きを私たちに教えてくれます。
Romans: tells us what God means by it all.
ローマ人への手紙は神が一体、何であるのかを私たちに教えてくれます。
Last week Pastor Mike talked about the power of the Holy Spirit and the different ways that can be manifest.
先週マイク牧師が聖霊の力について、そして、その力はどのように違った形で現れるのかということを話してくれました。
Here is one very powerful way: in the writing of the book of Romans.
ここで聖霊の強力な現れの一つの形についてお話ししましょう。それはローマ人への手紙に書かれています。
So I would like us to study this book over the next few weeks and months, and as we do, I believe you will conclude, as I have, that this book could not have been written by man alone.
ですから、これから二、三週間または数ヶ月かかっても、ローマ人への手紙を学んでいきたいと思います。そして、私が感じたように、一人の人物が描いたのではないなという結論にみなさんもたどり着くと思います。
It is a work of the Holy Spirit.
それは聖霊の働きなのです。
Paul gets right into it from verse 1(-4):
パウロは次の節ではっきりと書いています。
Paul begins his theological thesis with this vital statement on who Jesus is:
パウロは自分の神学的な論文を「イエスが誰であるか」という重要なことから書き始めています。
- He is the Son of God.
イエスは神の御子です。 - He is resurrected from the dead.
イエスは死から復活されました。 - He is our Lord.
イエスは私達の主です。
We are called by God Himself.
私達は神ご自身に召されています。
God is calling us.
神は私たちに使命を与えてくださいます。
And what is He calling us to?
では私たちの使命とは何でしょうか？
It’s not to sing and dance although you can do that if you want.
あなたがそうしたければそうしてもいいですが、踊ったり、歌ったりすることではありません。
It’s not to get a degree although you can get that if you want.
あなたがそうしたければそうしてもいいですが、学校で学位をとることではありません。
It’s not even to write books unfortunately but we can do that too if we want.
不運にも本を書くことでもありません。もちろんあなたがそうしたければそうしてもいいですが。
We are called primarily:
私たちの基本的な大元の使命は
To belong!
属することです。
I wrote about this in this week’s mail.
今週のメールにも書きましたが、
God is calling us to belong to Christ!
神は私たちにキリストに属してください。キリストのものになってくださいと言っています。
He is calling us to obedience that comes from faith in Christ.
神は私たちにキリストの信仰により神に従順になることが私たちの使命だと言っています。
That’s our call.
神は私達を召しています。
What an encouraging statement!
何という励ましの言葉でしょうか！
It leads me to wonder:
この言葉は次のような考えに導いてくれます。
Is our faith being reported all over the world?
私達の信仰は全世界に言い伝えられていますか？ という考えです。
To some degree it is because we are an expat church and people go out from here into many different countries of the world.
ある意味、私たちのこの教会は仕事や学業で海外駐在している人々のための教会であるので、人々は世界中の様々な国に、ここから旅立って行くことになります。
What a wonderful thing this is!
何んと素晴らしいことでしょう！
Let me rephrase the question:
もう一度言わせてください。
Is our faith easy for others to forget?
私たちの信仰は他の人々にとって忘れられるようなものでしょうか？（私たちの信仰は人に忘れられやすいものでしょうか？）
Or is it something remarkable that people talk about?
それとも他の人々の話題に上るほどに素晴らしいものでしょうか？（それとも人が話題にするほど素晴らしいものでしょうか？）
I know that many have gone out from here blessed by the fellowship of this church and God’s presence here but I believe we still have so much more ahead of us.
たくさんの人々がこの教会から祝福を受けて旅立ったことでしょう。でも、私たちにはもっとたくさんのことが待ち受けています。
It is my hope and prayer that people all over Minoh and all over the world would hear about our faith and give thanks to God for it, just as Paul did with the Christians in Rome.
パウロがローマの信者たちとそうしたように、箕面と世界中の人々が、私たちの信仰のことを知り、神に感謝を捧げることが私の願いと祈りです。
Look at the passion in this statement:
この節からは情熱が感じられます。
my whole heart, constantly, all the time.
心より、常に、絶えずという情熱です。
Paul sets an example of how we are to pray for one another.
パウロは、私たちがどのようにお互いのために祈れば良いのか、手本を見せてくれました。
There’s a sense of both urgency and joy in doing this.
急ぎばやに喜びの中で行われている様子がわかります。
Praying members make a strong church.
教会員が祈るなら強い教会になります。
How often this past week did you remember your church – the other believers here – in prayer?
今週、あなたは教会のメンバーのことを、祈りの中でどれだけ思い出しましたか？
The leaders do it regularly but this is something we should all be doing.
教会のリーダーたちはもちろん頻繁に教会の人々のために祈っていますが、私たちも同じように教会の人々のために祈るべきです。
Let’s re-commit to doing this daily.
毎日祈ることをもう一度心がけましょう。
How much stronger our church will be if we all share this passion.
もしみんなが同じ情熱を持てば、私たちの教会は何と強くなることでしょうか。
The prayers of the saints are valuable to God.
神にとって聖人の祈りは貴重なものです。
And any time is a good time.
時間や時は選びません。いつでもいいです。
Let’s stop right now and pray for our church.
今から、少しお話をやめて、教会のために祈りましょう。
This is the theme of the entire book of Romans.
これがローマ人への手紙の全体のテーマです。
Are you ashamed of the gospel?
福音のことを恥ずかしく思っていませんか？
I was once very publicly ridiculed for my faith.
かつて私は、公の場で私の信仰について嘲笑されたことがあります。
Someone wrote a letter to a national newspaper in response to a letter I had written and they attacked me for my faith so libelously I couldn’t believe the paper would print such a piece and I wondered if I should have taken legal action.
私が新聞社の投稿欄に向けて書いた手紙、それは私の信仰について書いた手紙ですが、その手紙が採用され、読者の誰かが、その掲載された私の手紙に対して攻撃的な中傷をしたのです。新聞社がそんな手紙を掲載したことも信じられませんでしたが、今思えばその時、然るべき法的な手段を取ってもよかったのではないかと思えるぐらいです。
It didn’t make me ashamed of the gospel but I did want to crawl down a hole, hide there and not talk about God for a long, long time.
もちろん福音に対して私はこれっぽっちも恥ずかしいとは思いませんでしたが、その時は穴に入って隠れたい、神様のこともしばらくは長い間話したくないと思いました。
But someone shared with me the words of Jesus in
しかしその頃、誰かがイエスの言葉を私と分かち合ってくれました、
I was greatly encouraged by these words and came back out of my hole.
私はこの言葉にとても勇気づけられました。そして暗い穴から脱出することができたのです。
But Christians are often mocked for believing in a risen Christ, a virgin birth, a second coming; for adhering to sexual purity, sober living, clean speaking, and so on.
しこのようにクリスチャンたちはよく、復活したキリストや処女の出産、キリストの再臨、性的な純潔を守ること、地味な生活、綺麗な言葉遣いなどを信じていることを嘲られるのです。
When confronted about these things and mocked for them, are you inclined to feel ashamed?
これらのことを正面から嘲られたり、バカにされたりした時、あなたは自分を恥ずかしく思いますか？
Don’t!
思わないでください！
Paul says that he is not ashamed of the gospel.
パウロは福音のことを恥ずかしいとは思いませんでした。
To a dying world – a world that Paul is soon to say has been ‘handed over to its own sinfulness’ – the gospel is foolishness because the world relies on its own wisdom which no longer knows God.
滅びつつあるこの世に、パウロが言う「自らの罪に支配された」この世に取ったら福音は馬鹿げています。なぜならこの世は神など知らず、自分たちの知恵に頼って成り立っているからです。
The great irony is about to be laid bare:
大いなる皮肉がそこにはあります。
Those who ought to be ashamed of living unrighteously try to bring shame on those who live righteously.
罪深い道を走っているので恥ずかしく思うはずの人が、義の道を歩む人に恥をかかせようとします。
Paul says he is not ashamed of the gospel because The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. V16
パウロは福音を伝えることを恥ずかしいとは思いませんでした。なぜなら、福音は、すべて信じる者に、救を得させる神の力であるからです。
He adds, “first for the Jew, then for the Gentile”
彼はユダヤ人をはじめ、ギリシヤ人にもと、付け加えました。
This is speaking of chronology, not superiority.
それは、ユダヤ人がギリシャ人に優っているからというような優先順位ではなく、年表に乗っ取った歴史的な順番です。
The Jews were God’s vehicle for introducing his plan of salvation to all humanity.
ユダヤ人たちは全人類に神と救いの計画を広めるための働き手でありました。
Therefore the gospel has first been revealed to Jews, then it was introduced to the Gentiles.
ですから福音は最初にユダヤ人たちに伝えられ、それから異邦人に伝わりました。
But let’s come back to the gospel being the “power of God”.
しかし神の力である福音をもう一度見直してみましょう。
The gospel is power because it reveals Truth.
福音は神の力です。なぜなら、真理を啓示させるからです。
Specifically it reveals the two-fold nature of God’s righteousness:
神の義、の二つの要素による性質を詳しく表しています。
The absolute holiness of God and therefore his wrath over the world’s sinfulness;
神の完全な聖さ、そして神の、罪深い世界に対する憤慨により、
and his grace in bringing righteousness to an undeserving world.
神の恵み、哀れみをもって、あたいしない世界に神の義がもたらされるのです。
There are many, many alternative ideas and suggestions out there and some of them are very, very nice.
それに取って代わるアイデアや案はたくさんありますし、中にはとても魅力的なものもあります。
But they count for nothing if they’re not true.
しかし、それらは真理ではありません。
The gospel is the truth, just as Jesus himself is the truth.
福音は真理です。イエスが真理であるのと同様に真理です。
And the truth, for all it’s hard realities (awareness of sin), takes us way, way beyond nice.
そして真理は、受け入れがたい事実、その事実とは罪の意識ですが、私たちをはるかに良いものに導いてくれます。
The truth transforms us. It heals us. It empowers us.
真理は私たちを変えます。私たちを癒してくれます。私たちに力を与えてくれます。
The fruit of the gospel is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
福音のみのりは愛、喜び、平安、忍耐、親切、善、誠実、柔和そして自制心です。
Ultimately the power of the gospel lies in its ability to bring together what had been torn apart. The gospel reconciles us to God.
ようするに、福音の力は、バラバラになったものを繋げてくれて、私達を神と和解させる力なのです。
This truth must, however, be received by faith, which leads us to the final statement Paul makes in this opening section of his letter to the Romans:
しかしながら真理は信仰によって得られ、その信仰については、ローマ人への手紙の冒頭でパウロが書いた最後の宣言に繋がっていきます。
“The righteous will live by faith.”
信仰による義人は生きる」
Conclusion/Review:
結論のおさらいをしましょう。
- Know who Jesus is: the Son of God, the resurrected Lord.
イエスを知るということは：イエスが神の御子、よみがえった神だということを知ることです。 - Understand what the gospel is. It’s about Jesus and His role in reconciling us to God.
福音が何かを理解する。福音はイエスのこと、私たちを神と和解させるイエスの役割のことを言います。 - Recognize the importance of meeting together, building our faith together and praying for one another.
共に集まり、信仰を高め、互いのために祈ることの大切さを知る。 - Never be ashamed of the gospel.
福音を決して恥と思わないでください。
On the contrary, delight in it. It is the power of God.
反対に、喜ばしいことは福音です。神の力です。
When you invite people to our Lifetime service, do it kindly and respectfully but also with joy and with eagerness.
私たちのライフタイムサービスに友達を招待するなら、喜びと熱心さを持ち、親切に責任感を持って接しましょう。
We should feel confident to share the gospel.
福音を分かち合うことに自信を持ちましょう。
We have nothing to apologise for or be afraid of.
謝ったり、恐れたりすることは何もありません。
The Roman Christians were thrown to the lions for their faith.
ローマのクリスチャンたちは信仰を持っているが故に、ライオンの群れの中に放り込まれました。
You won’t be thrown to the lions.
あなたたちは信仰のためにライオンの群れに放り込まれることはありません。
- Live by faith. Trust God with every aspect of your life.
信仰によって生きる。人生のすべてを神にゆだねましょう。
