James 4:1-10
ヤコブの手紙 4:1-10
Introduction
はじめに
There are many notable things I can say about my beloved country, the Philippines. Aside from beautiful sceneries and rich natural resources, our country has produced many exceptionally talented people. From the beautiful and smart ladies that won the Miss Universe pageants, the award-winning talents in Broadway and in the movie industry, to individual sport champions in bowling, chess and boxing, to name a few.
私の大好きな故郷フィリピンの有名なものについて私が言えることはたくさんあります。綺麗な景色や豊かな天然資源だけでなく，著名人も数多くいます。ミスユニバースのグランプリに輝いた美しく聡明な女性達やブロードウェイや映画界で活躍している方々もいれば，ボウリング，チェス，ボクシングで世界チャンピオンになった方々もいます。
Speaking of boxing, I’m not sure if the name Manny Pacquiao rings a bell. To the uninitiated, Manny Pacquiao is a Filipino professional boxer and politician currently serving as a Senator of the Philippines since 2016. Pacquiao is regarded by many boxing historians as one of the greatest professional boxers of all time. According to a Wikipedia entry:

He is the only eight-division world champion in the history of boxing, having won twelve major world titles… Pacquiao is also the first boxer in history to win major world titles in four of the eight “glamour divisions” of boxing: flyweight, featherweight, lightweight and welterweight, and holds the record of being the only four-decade world champion in boxing history, having held world championships across four decades (1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s).
パッキャオはボクシングの歴史で唯一の8部門における世界チャンピオンであり，12の主要な世界タイトルを獲得しています。パッキャオは，WBCフライ級 ，フェザー級，ライト級，ウェルター級の4階級で世界タイトルを獲得した史上初のボクサーでもあります。1990年代，2000年代，2010年代，2020年代の4つの年代にわたって世界チャンピオンとなった唯一のボクサーです。
Regardless of this man’s achievements and accolades, I believe that fighting is something that comes to us naturally. Why? Because we are born with a sinful nature that prefers going for the jugular instead of giving in.
パッキャオ氏の功績に関わらず，戦うことは私たち全員に共通していることと思います。それはなぜでしょう。なぜなら，私たちには相手に屈することよりも相手の急所を攻撃することを好むという罪深い性質があるからです。
The threat of war, in spite of treaties and world peace organizations, is always hanging over our heads. Sad to say, infighting can also take place among Christians and between family members.
様々な条約や世界平和集団の存在にも関わらず戦争の恐れがつねにどこかにあります。残念なことに，クリスチャンどうし，あるいは家族のあいだでもいさかいは起こります。
James understands this reality and addresses the problem of conflicts. He begins with the rhetorical question: 1 “What causes fights and quarrels among you?”
ヤコブはこの現実をふまえて，手紙のなかで対立の問題について書いています。彼ははじめにこのように問いかけます。「あなたがたの争いは，いったい何が原因ですか。」
- The CAUSE of fights and quarrels – verses 1-4
争いの原因
In the original language of the NT (Greek), the word “fights” refers to individual battles and “quarrels” as a general term for an entire war. And, James provides us with a clear answer as to its root cause.
新約聖書はもともとギリシア語で書かれていましたが，ギリシア語におけるfightは個人間の争い，quarrelは戦争全体の意味でした。そして，ヤコブはその根本的な原因を明確に指摘しています。
- Desires
欲望
Actually, desire is a neutral term that, depending on the context, can refer either to evil or good desires. When our desires go unmet, however, our frustration grows and explodes into a conflict. The desire is so powerful and all-consuming to the point of covetousness. So we wage war, intent on fighting until we get our way.
実際には，「欲望」というのは評価的にはニュートラルなことばです。文脈に応じて，悪いものも良いものも指すことができます。ただ，欲望が満たされない時には不満が増大し，紛争に発展してしまいます。欲望はあまりに強く，貪欲にあらゆるものを消費します。その結果，戦争を起こし，欲しいものが手に入るまで戦うのです。
Then, James identifies the results of this unchecked, combative desire.
そして，ヤコブはこのような制限のない戦闘欲求の辿りつく先を見極めています。
I suppose, most of us are not guilty of killing someone in a literal sense, but we do kill with our thoughts. We allow ourselves to devise ways to ambush someone else’s character. Someone might say, “At least, it can’t hurt anyone. It doesn’t go any further than that.” But it does.
私たちのほとんどは，文字通りの意味で誰かを殺すという罪を犯してはいないと思いますが，心の内では人を殺します。いつも，他人の性格を攻撃する様々な方法を企んでいます。誰かが言うかもしれません。「少なくとも，誰も傷つけたりしていない。頭の中のことにすぎない」。しかし，人を傷つけているのです。
The same malicious thoughts may lead us on to the 2nd effect James identifies as “fight and quarrel” – tongue-lashing or wounding with words. And, as is often the case in quarreling, the truth is always lost. The third effect is failure to pray. Why? When you’re angry and are fighting, there’s no consideration of asking God’s blessing or surrendering to His will. We just want to win the argument at all cost. Right?
その悪意ある考えこそが，ヤコブが２番目に説いている「戦いと口論」に導いてしまうのです。つまり，厳しい叱責あるいは言葉によって人を傷つけること。そして，口論によくあることですが，その最中に真実は失われてしまいます。悪意によってもたらされるものの３番目は「祈りの失敗」です。なぜでしょう。それは，怒っている時や口論をしている時，わたしたちは神様の祝福を求めることや神様の意志に従うことなど考えもしないからです。その時には，どうにかして勝ちたい，そのことしか考えていないからです。
I’m glad that James anticipates the fighter’s response. Some would answer like a smart-aleck would say, “We asked God, but He didn’t answer our prayers.” To them he will say in verse 3: “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” Here’s one clear hindrance to prayers: Asking with wrong motives. Remember: Real prayer allows God to come to our rescue… His way, not our way! Another cause for quarrels is identified in verse 4.
ありがたいことに，ヤコブは戦いが好きな人がどのような反応をするかさえ予測しています。「神様に祈っても，応えてくれなかった！」そのようなことを言う人に，ヤコブは第３節で「いくら願い求めても手に入らないのは，その目的や動機がまちがっているからです。自分を楽しませることのみ求めているからです。」と述べています。祈りに対する一つの明確な障害，それは「目的や動機を間違っている」ことです。覚えていてください，真の祈りは神様にその救いの方法を委ねることにあります。神様のやり方で。わたしたち人間のやり方ではなく！
さて，口論のもう一つの原因は第４節にあります。

Worldliness
世俗にまみれること
In the NT, the original word for world is kosmos. In this context, it means “the world that is separated from God.” It signifies a world that is self-centered, operating with demonic wisdom and is hostile toward God.
新約聖書では「世界」のもとの言葉は「Cosmosコスモス」です。この文脈では「神様から隔てられた世界」を指しています。自己中心的で，サタンの知恵で機能し，神様に対して敵対的な世界です。
Believers engage in battle when they try to satisfy their selfish desires with worldly motivation. It may include conflicts by fighting, pushing, and demanding until one gets exactly what he wants, when he wants it. This kind of attitude is so dangerous. It creates enmity (hostility) toward God. Deliberately living according to the world’s ways rather than God’s is an act of rebellion.
信者であっても世俗的な動機を持ってその自己中心的な欲望を満たそうとする時，争いが始まるのです。それは戦い，押しあい，要求ばかりして，欲しいものが欲しいときに手に入るようになるまで対立し続けることです。このような態度はとても危険です。神様に対する敵意をもつきっかけになります。故意に神様に逆らって世俗的に生きることは反逆の行為です。
Let’s consider some specific examples at this moment.
いくつかの例を詳しく見てみましょう。
- If you are hyperventilating because of the coronavirus (COVID-19), you might be tempted as the people of the world who don’t know God. You might want to hoard toilet paper, face masks, hand sanitizer, or other supplies. But, we know that God wants us to trust Him and to be at peace in our hearts even as we make necessary preparation and precaution.
コロナウィルスの件で過度に騒いでいるなら，神様を知らない人々と同じような行動に出るかもしれません。例えば，トイレットペーパー，マスク，消毒剤などを買いだめしてしまう。必要な準備と注意をしながら，神様を信用することは何より重要です。 - If you are single and eager to be married, you may be tempted to panic and hurry into a relationship. But God’s wisdom would be, “Don’t run ahead of Me, I know your desires. Lean on Me and I’ll help you find the right mate.”
独身で結婚願望のある人は，パニックに陥り関係を急ぐように誘惑されるかもしれません。しかし，神様の知恵は違います。「私の前を走らないことです。あなたの望みを知っていますよ。私に頼りなさい。あなたにぴったりのパートナーは必ず現れます」と神様は言われます。 - Or, maybe you’ve overperformed and done a really good job, but somebody else received the credit. The world naturally wants you to fight for your “rights.” Promote yourself, because if you don’t, nobody else will. But God’s wisdom says, “There’s no need to clamor for recognition. You’re here to do your work for My glory, not yours. I have seen the good that you’ve done and I will be the One to reward you.”
また，自分が一所懸命頑張ってよい仕事をしたのに他人の方が高く評価されるということがあるかもしれません。世の人は自分の権利のために戦うよう言うでしょう。自己喧伝を大いにしなさい！他の誰もしてはくれないよ！しかし，神様の知恵は違います。「人に認められる必要はありません。自分の栄光のためではなく，私の栄光のために働きなさい。私はあなたの努力を見ています。そしてそれに報いるのも私です」
Having diagnosed the cause and effect of fighting, James next turns our attention to God’s CURE, the divine solution to this problem.
このように争いの原因と結果について述べたあと，ヤコブは神様による「治療」に注意を向けます。これこそがこの問題に対する神聖な解決策なのです。
- The CURE against fights and quarrels – verses 5-10
戦争と口論に対する解決策（5節-10節）
- Being indwelt by the Holy Spirit – 5 “Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us?”
聖霊の宿り─5「神が私たちのうちに住まわせてくださった聖霊は，ねたむほどの愛をもって，私たちを見守っておられる」と書いてある聖書のことばを，どう理解しているのですか。
The Holy Spirit has been given to empower us for living. He jealously desires our wholehearted devotion. When we divide our allegiance between the Lord and the world, there’s an inner battle for control. But when we draw upon His power and confess, “Lord, it’s Your battle, please take control,” the struggle subsides.
聖霊は私たちに与えられた生きる力です。聖霊は私たちの心からの献身を切望しています。神様と世界の間で忠誠心を分けようとする時，支配のための内なる戦いが起こります。しかし，私たちが神様のお力に頼って「主よ，この戦いをあなたのものとして制御してくださるように」と告白すれば，争いは自然と静まります。
- Being filled with grace- 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” The NLV renders it this way…
恵みに満ちる─6しかし，神は，さらに豊かな恵みを与えてくださいます。ですから，こう言われています。「神は，高ぶる者を退け，へりくだる者に恵みをお授けになる。」（『新改訳聖書』「ヤコブの手紙」4:6）この箇所は『ニューライフ版 新約聖書』では次のように訳されています；
Conclusion
まとめ
It’s interesting to note that the word HUMBLE encloses verses 7-9. In v.6, we’re told that God “gives us more grace” to the humble, and in v.10, we’re instructed to humble ourselves “before the Lord.” Sandwiched between vv.6 & 10, is a list of imperatives that describes the process of becoming humble before God.
「ヤコブの手紙」4章において，「謙虚でいること」を指すことばが第7節-9節を挟んで使われていることに注目してください。第6節には「神は謙遜な者に力をお与えになります」とあります。また第10節には「主の前で，自分がいかに取るに足りない存在か思い知らされる時，主はあなたがたを助け起こし，力づけてくださるのです」と書かれています。そして，この二つの節に挟まれるかたちで謙虚になる為にやるべきことが書いてあります。
Submit to God (v.7a) – We are to stop fighting and surrender our wills to His control.
神様の前に謙虚になりなさい（7節前半）─争いをやめて神の前に降伏するのです。
Resist the devil (v.7b)– The devil has no control over us. We must resist his temptation to assert ourselves that often leads to conflict.
悪魔に立ち向かいなさい（7節後半）─悪魔が私たちを支配することはできません。悪魔の誘惑に抵抗して，争いへ導かれないように強く立ち向かうのです。
Come near to God (v.8a) – Let’s walk closely with God day by day.
神に近づきなさい（8節）─一日一日を，神様とともに歩みましょう。
Purify life (v.8b) – This means forsaking our sinful works and asking God for forgiveness earnestly. It means true repentance, as v.9 implies: 9 “Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.”
純粋で真実な心（8節）─これは私たちの罪深い業を捨て，真剣に神様に許しを求めることを意味します。9節にあるようにそれは「真の悔い改め」を意味します；9 あなたがたは，苦しみなさい。悲しみなさい。泣きなさい。笑いを悲しみに，喜びを憂いに変えなさい
If you live your life fighting and quarreling, you’ll end up on the ground; over a lifetime, you’ll end up with ashes. For people who fight fire with fire usually end up with ashes. Wouldn’t you prefer surrendering to the One who promises to lift you up? 10 “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”
争いに囲まれていては，あなたの人生は地に落ちてしまいます。そして最後には灰にまみれてしまうでしょう。争う者はみな，最後には灰になるのです。あなたを高く持ち上げることを約束してくださる神に降伏しようとは思いませんか。10主の前で，自分がいかに取るに足りない存在か思い知らされる時，主はあなたがたを助け起こし，力づけてくださるのです。
Our Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated it to us as written in Philippians 2:5-11.
イエス様は「ピリピ人への手紙」2章5-11節においてこのように示されました。
