Introduction
According to Westminster Shorter Catechism:
『ウエストミンスター小教理問答』によると：
Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to His will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgement of His mercies.
祈りは、罪の告白をして、神様の慈悲を認めた上で、神の御子であるイエス様の名を通して、神様のご意志にかなうようにと願い事をすることです。
E.M. Bounds ((August 15, 1835 – August 24, 1913) an American author, attorney and a pastor, who wrote many books, focused on the subject of prayer. He said:
アメリカの作家，弁護士であり牧師でもあったE. M. Bounds氏は祈りをテーマにした本をたくさんの本を書いた人です。彼は、こう言っています。
What the Church needs today is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use–men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. [In contemporary parlance, I suppose he meant men and women.]
現代の教会が必要としているのは、たくさんのよりよい機械でもなく，新しい組織や新しいやり方でもなく、精霊が動かせる人です。それはつまり祈りの人，祈りの力のある人です。
Early African converts to Christianity were earnest and regular in private devotions. Each one reportedly had a separate spot in the thicket where he would pour out his heart to God. Over time the paths to these places became well worn.
初期のアフリカ人のキリスト教への転向者は、個人的な祈りを熱心に行いました。彼らはみなそれぞれに密生したやぶの中に分け入って、神様に対して一所懸命に心から祈りをする習慣がありました。その熱心な祈りの繰り返しによって，やぶが踏みならされ，いつしか，その祈りの場所へ向かう小道ができるようになっていきました。
As a result, if one of these believers began to neglect prayer, it was soon apparent to the others. They would kindly remind the negligent one, “Brother, the grass grows on your path.”
結果として、仲間の誰かが祈りの時間を大切にしなかったときには，そのことがすぐに周りの人にわかるようになってしまいました。人々は祈りを軽んじた仲間に向かって「友よ、あなたの道に草が生えてるよ！」と優しく言って，そのことを気付かせたのです。
If we recognize that prayer is what we need in our time, how do we motivate ourselves to this important task and privilege? Shall we also remind one another, “Brother/sister, the grass grows on your path”?
さて、祈りが私たちの時代にも必要なものだと認識しているのならば，わたしたちはどのようにして自分自身を，この重要な任務と特権に対して意欲的にさせるのでしょうか。わたしたちも，「友よ、あなたの道に草が生えてるよ！」とお互いに言いましょうか。
How do we invigorate our prayer-life? I would like us to consider three (3) things.
わたしたちはどのようにして，祈りのある生活を活気あるものにしていくことができるでしょうか。3つのことで考えましょう。

Keep on praying
絶えず祈る
We can talk all day long about prayer, extol its importance and give examples of its effect on others, but it takes a much simpler approach to make it happen: Start praying!
私たちはその気になれば一日中祈りについて話し，その重要性を主張し，他の人に与える影響の数々について具体例を示すことができるでしょう。しかしもっと簡単なアプローチがあります。それは「祈りを始める」ことです。
Paul writes that we are to “pray without ceasing.” He is quite obviously, not telling us to stay on our knees in a posture of prayer 24 hours each day. That would be nearly impossible. His admonition refers to a mindset of always being conscious of our Heavenly Father and living a life of surrender to Him and His will. It is awareness of the truth that God should govern our every thought and action.
パウロはテサロニケ人への手紙に、「いつも祈りに励みなさい」と書きました。もちろん、一日中膝をついて祈っているようにとは言っていません。そんなことはほとんど不可能です。彼が言っているのは、つねに神様の存在を意識し，神様の前にひれ伏し，そのご意志に全面的に従うという考え方をもつことです。つまりそれは，神様が私たちのあらゆる考えや行動を支配するべきであるという真実を意識することです。
When our thoughts turn to worry, fear, discouragement, and anger, we are to consciously and quickly turn every thought into prayer and every prayer into thanksgiving.
私たちの心が心配、恐怖、落胆、そして怒りに支配されたなら、私たちは意識的に，そして素早く，その心を祈りと感謝で満たすべきです。
In his letter to the Philippians, Paul commands us to stop being anxious and instead;
ピリピ人への手紙で，パウロはわたしたちに，不安になるのをやめて，代わり
にと言っています。
As we go through the day, prayer should be our first response to every fearful situation, every anxious thought, and every undesired task that God commands. A lack of prayer will cause us to depend on ourselves instead of depending on God’s grace.
1日を過ごすなかで、祈りというのは私たちがとるべき最初の反応は祈りであるべきです。どんなに怖い状況でも、どんなに不安なときでも、神様に命じられた，あなたにとって望ましくない任務にあたるときでも。祈りを欠いてしまうと、神様の恵みではなく自分自身を頼るようになってしまうでしょう。
While very ill, John Knox, the founder of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland, called to his wife and said, “Read me that Scripture where I first cast my anchor.” After he listened to the beautiful prayer of Jesus recorded in John 17, he seemed to forget his weakness. He began to pray, interceding earnestly for his fellowmen. He prayed for the ungodly who had thus far rejected the gospel. He pleaded in behalf of people who had been recently converted. And he requested protection for the Lord’s servants, many of whom were facing persecution. As Knox prayed, his spirit went Home to be with the Lord. The man of whom Queen Mary had said, “I fear his prayers more than I do the armies of my enemies,” ministered through prayer until the moment of his death. (Our Daily Bread. April 11).
スコットランドの長老派教会の設立者であったジョン・ノックス氏の病気がひどくなったとき、彼は奥さんを呼んで，そばで聖書を読むようにいいました。そして、ヨハネの福音書17章にあるイエス様の素晴らしい祈りを聞いてから、彼は自分の病気のことなど忘れたように見えました。彼は祈り始めました。同僚のために熱心に祈りました。福音を拒絶した人々のために祈りました。キリスト教へ転向した人のために祈りました。そして、迫害を受けていたクリスチャンのために祈りました。そしてノックスの魂は，祈りのうちに天に召されたのです。彼について、スコットランドのメアリー女王はこう言っていました。「私は敵の軍隊よりもっと，彼の祈りの力を恐れています」。彼は死の間際まで祈りを捧げたのです。
To pray without ceasing is to reveal our total reliance on and dependence upon our loving Father God.
絶えなく祈ることは、愛に溢れた父なる神様に完全に頼ることの明かしである。

Keep on believing
絶えず信じる
You only truly believe the parts of the Bible that you obey. People say, “I believe in prayer.” But do they pray? No? Then they don’t believe in it.
聖書で書かれていることの中で、人々が本当に信じているのは、自分が従える部分だけです。人々は「わたしは祈りの力を信じます」と言います。ですが、彼らは祈るでしょうか？答えはいいえ？それなら、祈りを信じていないということです。
And in
When the Devil assaults your mind, resist him! Understand that you are in a war. Don’t entertain the lies of the Enemy when God Almighty paid such a great price for your redemption. Keep on believing God and His promises.
悪魔があなたの心を攻撃したら、抵抗してください。自分が戦闘状態にあることを理解してください。全能の神様が私たちの罪に対して大きな犠牲を払ってくださったのに、敵の甘い言葉におぼれてはいけません。神様を信じ、神様との約束を信じ続けてください。
Nothing can rob you of your hold on grace and your confidence in God without your permission. The grace of God is too great. The love and mercy of God are too strong. The compassion and peace of God are too powerful.
あなたの許可なしには、神様からの信頼と恩寵を奪うものはないのです。神様の恩寵はあまりにも偉大です。神様の愛と憐れみはあまりにも強大です。神様の慈悲と平和はとても力強いものです。
We must believe God’s Word. Never release your grip on the covenant Christ made for you. The Bible teaches that you are to walk by faith, not by sight. Our prayer-life is reflective of our faith life.
わたしたちは神様の御言葉を信じなければなりません。イエス様があなたのためにしてくれた約束を決して手離さないでください。聖書の教えは、「実際に見ることによってではなく、信じることによって、これを事実と認めているのです」。祈りとはすなわち信仰の表れなのです。
Dr. Helen Roseveare, missionary to Zaire, told the following story.
ザイールへの伝道師だったヘレン・ロゼヴェル博士は次のような話をしました。
“A mother at our mission station died after giving birth to a premature baby. We tried to improvise an incubator to keep the infant alive, but the only hot water bottle we had was beyond repair. So we asked the children to pray for the baby and for her sister.
子供を産んだばかりの母親が伝道所で亡くなりました。その赤ちゃんをなんとかして生かしてやりたいと保育器を作ろうとしたのですが、わたしたちの手元にあったたった1つの湯たんぽは修理不能な状態でした。そこでわたしたちは，赤ちゃんとそのお姉ちゃんのために祈ってほしいと，子供たちにお願いしました。
One of the girls responded. ‘Dear God, please send a hot water bottle today. Tomorrow will be too late because by then the baby will be dead. And dear Lord, send a doll for the sister so she won’t feel so lonely.’
一人の女の子はこう祈りました。「神様、今日中に湯たんぽを送ってください。明日では遅すぎます。赤ちゃんが助かりません。それから神様、お姉ちゃんが寂しくならないようにお人形も送ってください。」
That afternoon a large package arrived from England. The children watched eagerly as we opened it. Much to their surprise, under some clothing was a hot water bottle!
その日の午後のこと，イギリスから大きな荷物が届きました。私たちが箱を開けていた時，子供たちは熱心に見守っていました。そして驚くことに、いくつかの服の下にあったのは湯たんぽだったのです。
Immediately the girl who had prayed so earnestly started to dig deeper, exclaiming, ‘If God sent that, I’m sure He also sent a doll!’ And she was right! The heavenly Father knew in advance of that child’s sincere requests, and 5 months earlier He had led a ladies’ group to include both of those specific articles.”
あのお祈りをした女の子がすぐ，「湯たんぽを送ってくれたんだから、お人形も絶対に送ってくれているはずです」と言って箱の中を探しはじめました。そして彼女は正しかったのです。天におられるお父様はその女の子の誠実な祈りを5ヶ月も前からお分かりになっていて、彼女の願ったもの、つまり、湯たんぽとお人形が届くように，ある女性グループをザイールまで導いていたのです。

Keep on expecting
待つことをやめない
In Acts 12:1–17, we read that King Herod, who was persecuting the Church, had already killed James, the brother of John, with the sword. He then had Peter arrested and thrown in jail.
『使徒の働き』１２章には、ヘロデ王が教会を迫害し、ヨハネの弟であるヤコブをすでに剣で殺したとあります。そして，ペテロを逮捕して刑務所に入れたのです。
It was a dark time for God’s people. They were being hunted by brutal Roman soldiers, and one by one, either killed or imprisoned. To their credit, the disciples sought the Lord for Peter’s deliverance.
神様を信じる人々にとって暗い時代でした。残忍なローマ兵士に捕らえられ、一人ずつ殺されたり，刑務所に入れられたりしました。弟子たちは、ペテロの解放のために神様の救済を求めました。
Verse 5 says
God miraculously released Peter, but when he knocked at the gate of the house where they were meeting, the disciples didn’t believe he was really there! Rhoda, the servant girl, was so excited to hear Peter’s voice, she didn’t stop to let him in. She just ran back and told the others. “Guess what? Peter’s here!” They didn’t believe her.
神様の奇跡でペテロが解放されました。しかし、弟子たちが集まっていた家の戸を彼がノックした時、弟子たちはペテロが本当にそこにいるとは信じていませんでした。手伝いの女性ローダはペテロの声を聞いて喜び、彼を招き入れました。彼女はただみんなのところに走って行ってその状況を説明したのです。「何だと思う？ペテロがいるのよ！」しかし弟子たちは彼女を信じませんでした
The angel fetched Peter out of prison, but it was prayer that fetched the angel.
天使がペテロを刑務所から救出したのですが、天使をそこへ連れて行ったのは祈りの力でした。
When you pray, be ready to receive God’s answer. Expect a miracle! Trust His Word and allow Him to be God. He knows what you need, and He knows the best way to meet your needs. Remember, He is a good God!
祈るときはいつも，神様の答えを受け入れる準備もしてください。奇跡を待つのです。神様の御言葉を信じ、神様に従ってください。神様はあなたに何が必要かご存じです。そして、それに応える最善の方法もご存じなのです。覚えておいてください。神様，それは良い神様なのです。
Conclusion
When we pray, remember:
祈る時には，覚えていてください

The love of God that wants the best for us. So, keep on praying.
私たちにとって最善を望まれる神様の愛。だから、祈りをやめないでください。 -
The wisdom of God that knows what is best for us. So, keep on believing.
私たちにとって何が最善かをご存じである神様の英知。だから、信じることをやめないでください。 -
The power of God that can accomplish it. So, keep on expecting.
全てを成し遂げることのできる神様の力。だから、待つことをやめないでください。
