Merry Christmas!
Perhaps you’re wondering why I’m wishing you a merry Christmas. Has the jetlagged really hit me? Maybe everyday’s Christmas for me. Or maybe I’m just a bit weird. (It’s not a quiz, don’t raise your hands.)
おそらく、みなさんはどうして私が今更「メリークリスマス」と挨拶するのかとおもっているでしょう。時差ぼけのせいでしょうか。もしくは私にとって毎日はクリスマスなんでしょうか。もしくは、私はちょっと変わっているだけかもしれません。（クイズではないので、手を上げなくていいです）
We celebrate Christmas on December 25 of course, but many people, many Christians around the world from different cultural backgrounds – mainly Eastern Orthodox Christians – actually celebrated Christmas last Monday on January 7. So merry Christmas:)
私たちはもちろん12月25日にクリスマスを祝うのですが、世界中で多くのキリスト教徒は、特に東方教会の信者が1月7日、先週の月曜日にクリスマスを祝いました。

皆さんの中で、先日のキャロル礼拝での私のクリスマスメッセージを覚えている人はいますか？
Given that it’s still Christmas (in an Eastern Orthodox sense), I’d like to continue with this message and look a little more at the wise men who came to the infant Christ. At the carol service we looked at their gifts. Today, I’d like to look at them. Who were [the magi] they?
ある意味ではまだクリスマスですので、そのメッセージを続けたいと思います。キャロル礼拝では賢者たちが持ってきた「贈り物」について注目しましたが、、今日は賢者たちについて見ていきたいと思います。一体彼らは何者なんでしょうか？
Matthew is the only gospel writer to mention them. Although they are often called ‘kings’ or ‘wise men’, they were really ‘magi’. But what were magi? The more you look at who they were, the weirder it gets, and the more uncomfortable I tend to feel.
福音書の中ではマタイだけが彼らのことについて書いています。一般に彼らは「王様」または「賢者」と呼ばれていますが、実際は、彼らは「マギ」と呼ばれる職種の者でした。マギとはどんな人たちなんでしょうか？調べれば、調べるほど話がおかしくなってしまい、変な気持ちになってしまいます。
‘Kings’ and ‘wise men’ is a nice way a putting it. It works well for Christmas Nativity plays and for singing Christmas carols. But it’s actually a little misleading. They might have been in the company of kings and they were most certainly regarded as wise men by the people of their day. But they were more than this (or should I say, less than this?).
「王様」や「賢者」という訳はクリスマスの劇やキャロルではよく使われているのですが、そのままの意味だと誤解が生じます。彼らは王様のところにいたかもしれない、そして当時の人々から見て「賢者」であったかもしれない。しかし、彼らはそれ以上のものであり、もしくは、それ以下のものだったのです。
They were actually astrologers – not astronomers who study the stars, but astrologers who read omens in the formations of the stars. They were magicians, dreamers and likely even practiced sorcery. This is weird. It feels uncomfortable. These people don’t belong in the Christmas story.
実際は彼らは「星占い師」でした。それは星を勉強する「天文学者」ではなく、星の形から神のお告げを読む「星占い師」だったのです。彼らは魔術師、夢占い師、そして魔法使いであったかもしれません。これは本当に変な話です。なんか気持ち悪いですね。クリスマスの話とは程遠いものです。
The more you look at who they were, the more you realise that they don’t fit in. Even more so when you think that it was only Matthew who wrote about them. Luke was a little more open-minded and John was more of the dreamer-type. You’d think they might – might – have mentioned them. But Matthew?
彼らをよく見れば見るほど、クリスマスの話に合わないことが分かります。さらにマタイしか彼らのことを書いていません。ルカはもっと偏見のない人物だったし、ヨハネはもっと「夢で預言する」タイプでしたが、彼らは「マギ」について何も書いていません。なのに、どうしてマタイだけが書いたのでしょう？
Matthew was a Jew, writing about Jews for Jews. Why on earth was he connecting strange, non-Jew astrologers to the birth of the Messiah? It doesn’t make sense. It’s weird. It feels uncomfortable. And it’s wrong because, quite simply, these people really don’t belong in the story.
マタイはユダヤ人でした。そして、彼はユダヤ人についてユダヤ人向けに福音書を書きました。一体なぜ、マタイは妙なユダヤ人でない星占い師たちをメシアの誕生に関連させたのでしょうか？全く意味不明なことです。不愉快な話ですよね。簡単に言うと、この人たちはクリスマスの話に属するタイプの人たちではないのです。
But as we look into the life of Jesus, from his birth to his death, and from His resurrection to the giving of His Holy Spirit at Pentecost, we come to understand that while Jesus came for the Jews, he also came for the non-Jews. In fact, while Jesus came for the common man, he (Jesus) also came for the weirdos, for those who make us feel uncomfortable. He also came for those who don’t belong.
しかし、イエスさまの人生を振り返ってみると、彼の誕生から死まで、復活から聖霊が降臨するまで、イエスさまはユダヤ人だけでなくユダヤ人でない人たちのためにも来られたことがわかります。イエスは変わり者のためにも、不快に感じさせられる人のためにもこの世にやってきました。孤立している人のためにもきました。
Let’s look at some of the characters who followed Jesus.
ではイエスさまに従った人達についてみてみましょう。
Mary Magdalene was a demoniac. She had been possessed by demons. Surely that is the last kind of person you want hanging around while you’re trying to bring God’s Kingdom into the world. But Jesus delivered her and forgave her and loved her, and she became a devoted disciple that we would do well to imitate.
マグダラのマリアは悪魔に取り付かれたような人でした。神の王国をもたらそうとする時に一緒についてくるタイプの人ではありません。しかし、イエスさまは彼女の罪を赦し、そして、彼女はイエスさまの献身的な弟子になりました。我々が模範にするに相応しい存在になりました。
Zacchaeus was a snivelling little thief. No-one liked him. People avoided him and ostracised him. But Jesus called him, accepted him, corrected him and loved him, and salvation came into his life. He was a changed man.
ザアカイはこっそりと盗む泥棒でした。彼はみんなに嫌われました。人々に「黙って帰れ」とよく言われました。しかし、イエスさまは彼を受け入れ、彼の間違いを正して、愛して、彼の人生に救いを与えました。ザアカイはその後、別人のように生まれ変わりました。
Simon the Sorcerer was …a sorcerer! He wasn’t just some immoral sinner that you could easily forgive. He was a sorcerer. An enemy of God. He of all people did not belong in the church. But when he heard Philip preach the gospel and saw the amazing signs that accompanied that preaching, he believed in Jesus and was baptised.
シモンはなんと魔法使いでした。彼は簡単に許せるような単なる罪人ではありませんでした。彼は魔法使いでした。神の敵とよべる人物でした。彼こそ教会に相応しくない人でした。しかし、彼はピリポの福音のメッセージを聞いて、そのメッセージに伴う素晴らしい出来事を見て、イエスさまを信じて、すぐに洗礼を受けました。
There’s more to the story of Simon, but what matters here is that he was someone who was weird, unsuitable and didn’t belong, but when Jesus changed his life, he became beautiful, suitable as a worker of God and someone who belonged in the family of God.
シモンの話にはまだまだ続きがありますが、ここで大事なポイントとは、彼が変な人物であったということ、そして、社会にも相応しくない人だったということです。しかし、イエスさまが彼の人生を変えた時、彼は清められ、神さまのために働くのに相応しい人となり、神の家族に属する存在になりました。
Perhaps there are people today out there that we think don’t belong in here. We’d never say that! But deep in our hearts, not far from where we keep the little black book, we might be thinking that these people don’t belong, and these people should be ‘given some space’:
おそらく、こんにち、私たちは、教会の外には、ここにふさわしくない人たちがいると考えています。口に出しては言いませんが、私たちの心の奥深くに、私たちが要注意人物リストを保管する場所からそれほど遠くないところで、私たちはこれらの人々が属していないと考えているかもしれません。
The drug addict, the prostitute, the atheist, the homosexual, the Muslim, The Japanese Ossan and so on. We might be tempted to avoid them as people who are different, or at least people who are not like us. We might think of them as people who are unreachable, if not unsuitable for the Christian life and for church life, and people who would never want to belong to a church like ours.
麻薬中毒者、売春婦、無神論者、ホモセクシャル、イスラム教徒、日本人のおっさんなどなど。彼らは自分たちと違ってちょっと変わっているから避けたい気持ちになることもあるかもしれません。福音を伝えようにも絶対届かないと思うかもしれません。もしくは、クリスチャンの生き方や教会の生き方に合わないと思うかもしれません。もしくは彼らは教会に属したくないタイプの人達だと思うかもしれません。
But Jesus said,
しかし、イエス様は言いました。
Jesus came for the whole world. He came for the Jews and the Gentiles, men and women, the well-educated and the poorly-educated, the weird and wonderful, the popular and the unpopular, the straight and the gay, the believer and the atheist, and the priest and the sorcerer. In fact, there is no-one, no-one at all, who is outside of God’s affections.
イエスさまは全世界の人々のために来られました。彼はユダヤ人と非ユダヤ人、男性と女性、教育に富んだ人とそうでもない人、変人と良い人、人気者と嫌われているもの、異性愛者と同性愛者、信者と無神論者、祭司と魔術師、全員のために来られたのです。実際、神の愛から外されるものは誰もいないのです。
This is a double-edge message. Firstly it means that if you feel unlovely, unusable, unappealing to God and to people, a little weird, or are someone who perhaps just doesn’t belong, then take heart. This message is for you because God loves you and has a plan for your life. You are valuable and useful and lovable, and you belong to God. If you haven’t heard or responded to this gospel of Jesus, then today is your day. Today is the day of salvation.
このメッセージには二つの意味が含まれている。まず、もしあなたが、神様や人々に、愛されていない、役に立たない、この場に相応しくない人だと思っていたり、少し変わり者で、ここに属さないと思っているとしたら、元気を出してください。このメッセージはあなたのためです。なぜなら、神様はあなたを愛しておられます。あなたの人生のために素晴らしい計画を持っておられます。あなたは価値があり、役立つ人であり、愛されるべきであり、神のものなのです。今までに福音書のメッセージに応答したことがないなら、今日があなたの救いの日です。
The other side to today’s message is this: As we enter 2019, I’d like us to refocus on the mission given to us by Jesus in Matthew
このメッセージのもう一つの意味はこれです。2019年を前にして、イエスさまがマタイの福音書２８章に私たちに伝えた使命に注目しましょう。
The command is not to go to those people who are like us, or those people who are well dressed, or well-educated, or well-spoken, or amusing or talented or especially beautiful. We can go to them because God loves them too. But we can’t limit ourselves to them. We are to go to “all nations” – all people, warts and all, and share with them as we can, by word and by deed, respectfully, gently, boldly and prayerfully, the gospel of Jesus.
その使命とは、自分と同じような信者や人にだけでなく、おしゃれな服を着た、教育に富んだ、話の上手い、面白い、才能のある、きれいな人にだけでなく、私たちは”すべての人々”、変わった人も含めすべての人々のところへ行って、言葉と行ないによって、イエスの福音を分かち合うのです。
What is our church mission statement?
私たちの教会のミッションステートメントはなんですか。
Loving God, making disciples, blessing all.
神を愛する、弟子を育てる、すべての人を祝福する
This is our church’s way to fulfill the great commission to disciple all nations.
この教会はこのミッションステートメントによって、イエスさまの最後の指令「全世界に福音を広める大宣教命令」を果たしています。
We love God because that is the greatest thing we can do, and we know that all ministry can only be done in God’s strength.
私たちは神を愛しています。なぜならそれが私たちにできるいちばんすばらしいことだからです。そして、全てのミニストリーが神様の力によってのみできることなのです。
We make disciples because that is the commission, and that is the joy given to us. (We have some wonderful testimonies of that from last week.)
私たちは弟子を育てます。なぜならそれは私たちに託されていることであり、私たちに与えられた喜びだからです。（これについては、先週からのいくつかの素晴らしい証があります。）
We bless all people because all people have been created in the image of God and come under His affections. One of our highest callings is to love others as ourselves.
私たちはすべての人を祝福します。なぜならすべての人々が神のかたちに造られて、神に愛されているからです。あなたの隣人を自分のように愛せよというのが、神様が私たちに与えられた召しです。
The magi who followed the star to the infant Christ were a bunch of superstitious weirdos. But something happened on their journey to Christ and by the time they found Him, their worship of Him was so good and so right that it was recorded for all time for all people to read about and to imitate.
赤子のキリストを求めて旅に出た「マギ」達は、迷信を信じ偶像礼拝をする変人達の集まりでした。しかしその旅を通して彼らの心に変化が表れました。イエスさまを見つけた時に、彼らはイエスさまを賛美し礼拝しました。それは素晴らしく正しいことだったので、その出来事が記録され、現在までその話を読むことができ、彼らの行動を模範とすることができるのです。
Let’s be like the magi: people who are at the start, apart from God, a little weird and who don’t belong; yet who come to be in the presence of Jesus, who worship Him, are accepted by Him, loved by Him, and who ultimately belong to Him.
私たちもその「マギ」のようになりましょう。最初は神を知らず、ちょっと変わった、どこにも属さないものでしたが、イエスさまの前に立って、イエスさまを賛美して、イエスさまに受け入れられ、ついにはイエスさまに属しましょう。
