Today I’d like to talk about conversations. And when I think of conversations, I think of Pierre! 🙂
今日私は会話することについて話したいと思います。私は会話するということについて考えると、ピエールさんを思い浮かべます！ 🙂
Because Pierre can converse like no-one I’ve ever met before. So if you’re not a good conversationalist, go and talk to Pierre because he’ll help you and see you through. He has a real gift going there.

Pierre’s gift, however, is nothing compared to the gift for conversing that Jesus had.

Jesus engaged in conversations that literally changed the world. Today we’re continuing with our 7 year study of the books of the Bible by looking at the gospel of John.
イエスは、文字通り世界を変えた会話に従事しました。今日私たちは、ヨハネの福音書を読みながら、聖書の本の7年間の勉強を続けています。
The gospel of John is different from the other gospels. Where the other gospels are like photographic snapshots of Jesus’ life, John’s gospel is more like an oil painting.
ヨハネの福音書は他の福音とは異なります。他の福音書がイエスの生涯を絵にしたスナップ写真のようなものに例えるなら、ヨハネの福音書は油絵のようなものです。
John’s gospel has a unique style. It is more personal, and it’s also more theological. It also contains many of these knockout conversations of Jesus, seven of which I would like to look at this morning.
ヨハネの福音書には独特のスタイルがあります。それは、より個人的であり、より神学的でもあります。また、私が今朝、これから読もうと思っている7つのすばらしい会話を含んでいます。
Because of time, I’m really only going to introduce these conversations to you but I strongly encourage you to read them for yourselves when you get back home and prayerfully apply Jesus’ words to your own life.

- 1st conversation: Jesus vs Nicodemus
最初の会話はイエスとニコデモの会話です。
Jesus, the humble carpenter vs Nicodemus, the esteemed priest.
質素で謙虚な大工イエスと、尊敬される司祭ニコデモ。
The priest comes to Jesus at night because he’s too embarrassed to ask his questions in front of others in broad daylight. Yet he can’t resist! He recognises Jesus as one who has come from heaven and implicitly asks Jesus how a person can be saved.
ニコデモは夜にイエスに会いに来ます。なぜなら、彼は昼間に他人の前でイエスに質問をするのはあまりにも恥ずかしいからです。しかし、ニコデモは我慢することができなくなりました！ニコデモはイエスが天から来られた方だと認めています。人がどのように救われるのかをイエスに聞きました。
He should have known the answer to this but, to his credit, he had the humility to come and seek Jesus out this most important of all matters.
ニコデモはこれに対する答えをもちろん知っていたはずですが、自分のためにも、謙虚に、この質問を尋ねました。
Jesus’ answer makes spiritual history when he says,
イエスの答えは、霊的であり、歴史を作ったとも言える言葉となりました。
This answer completely stumps the esteemed priest, so Jesus tells him again,
この答えは、尊敬に値する司祭を完全に困らせました。イエスは司祭ニコデモに再び告げます。
This conversation soon led to one of the most monumental statements ever uttered:

- 2nd conversation: Jesus vs Pharisees (The 7 ‘I AM’s)
２つ目の会話はイエスとパリサイ人、7つの「私は～である」という会話についてです。
Jesus regularly tussled with the Pharisees (who were Jewish priests). Jesus was often angered by their legalistic approach to God’s law, and they were typically frustrated by Jesus’ teachings and his miracles, to which they had no answer.
イエスはよくユダヤ教の司祭であったパリサイ人たちと衝突しました。イエスは、しばしば、彼らの神への律法的アプローチに反したため、戒（とが）められました。そしてパリサイ人たちは、彼らの理解を超えるイエスの教えとその奇跡にほとほと困っていました。
But the conversations that might have infuriated the Pharisees more than any other were the 7 statements Jesus made concerning His divinity. In speaking with them, Jesus said:

The 7 “I AM” statements are a very important part of John’s gospel.

They continue the teaching of Jesus’ divinity, introduced in the first verse of John’s gospel.
7つの「私は～である」という発言は、ヨハネの福音書の最初の節から始まり、イエスが神であることの教えが続きます。

- 3rd conversation: Jesus vs Man Born Blind vs Pharisees
３つ目の会話は、イエスと生まれつきの盲人とパリサイ人についての会話です。
The 9th chapter of John contains one of the most extraordinary dialogues I have ever read. It’s dramatic. It’s clever. It’s insightful. And it’s extremely funny. (They could easily make a Monty Python skit out of it.)
ヨハネの第9章には、私が今まで読んだことのない最も特別な対話の1つが含まれています。それは非常に劇的で、洞察力もあり、賢く、とても面白く書かれています。モンティ・パイソンのコメディを作れるぐらい面白いです。
In it, Jesus heals a man born blind. What follows is the most hilarious conversation between the healed man and the Pharisees. You can read the comedy for yourself later. I’d like to focus on what Jesus said to the man before and after the healing.
それでいて、イエスは目が見えない人を癒しました。以下は、癒された男とパリサイ人との間で交わされた最も愉快な会話です。後で、みなさん、コメディだと思って読んでみてください。私は、治癒の前後にイエスが人に言ったことに焦点を当ててみたいと思います。
Jesus’ disciples had asked Him why the man was born blind. “Who sinned?” they asked. “This man or his parents?” It’s a question people still ask today. Why is that person suffering? What did I do to deserve this sickness or this trouble? Whose fault was that tragedy?
イエスの弟子たちは、なぜその人が生まれつき盲目になったのかと神に尋ねました。「誰が罪を犯したのですか？」「この男ですか？彼の両親ですか？」と彼らは尋ねました。それはこんにちでも人々が当然聞くような質問です。なぜその人はそんなにも苦しまなければならないのですか？このような病気やこのような苦難に値するほど悪いことを私はしましたか？そのような悲劇は誰のせいですか？と聞きたくなるのは当然です。
Jesus gives a very direct, clear answer:
イエスは非常に直接的で明確な答えを与えてくれます。
Simply put, the devil does his spoiling work with God’s creation, but God overcomes with His redemptive work. Sickness and suffering are not from God, but God is with us in our sickness and suffering, and he uses our sickness and suffering to display God’s saving work.
簡単に言えば、悪魔は神が造ったものをダメにしようとしますが、神は贖いのはたらきをされます。病気と苦しみは神からくるものではありませんが、神は私たちの病気と苦しみの中でも私たちと共におられ、病気と苦しみを神の働きを表すためにお使いになります。
Jesus concludes the matter later when speaking to the Pharisees: He said,
イエスは後にパリサイ人と話すときにこの問題を結論づけます。イエスはこう言いました。

- 4th conversation: Jesus vs Martha
４つ目の会話はイエスとマルタの会話です。
Here’s another for the “I AM” collection. The whole conversation Jesus has with Martha is breathtaking. Here’s the highlight:
「私は〜である」シリーズのうちの一つです。イエスがマルタと話しているすべての会話は息を呑むほど見事です。次にあげるのがハイライトの箇所になります：
Of course, this wasn’t just fancy talk. Jesus then raised Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, back to life.
もちろん、これはただの話だけでは終わりませんでした。イエス・キリストは4日間死んでいたラザロを生き返らせました。
Jesus was, and is, the resurrection.
イエスはよみがえりであったし、よみがえりなのです。イエスは復活です。
Go for a stroll through the beautiful Onohara cemetery and you’ll see peppered throughout the grounds Christian graves, and most of them have this simple statement of truth on the tombstones: “I am the resurrection and the life”.
この近辺、小野原にある美しい墓地を散策してみると、墓地のいたるところにキリスト教徒のお墓が見えます。その大部分は、「わたしはよみがえりであり、命である。」という、端的に真実による声明で墓標が刻まれています。
18 months ago, at Keiko-san’s funeral, this simple but profound statement was the foundation of the sermon that was preached and it remains the centre of hope for all Christians as we live and die.
18ヶ月前、慶子さんのお葬式では、この簡単なようですが意味深い声明は、葬儀の話の中で話しましたし、生きて死にゆくクリスチャンとって希望の基盤となります。

- 5th conversation: Jesus vs Thomas
５つ目の会話はイエスとトマスの会話です。
Poor Thomas gets a bit of a bum rap. He makes one statement of doubt and he’s forever known as ‘Doubting Thomas’. Thomas is also the disciple who seemed to be a little slow to understand what Jesus was saying sometimes, but it was Thomas’ questions that led to some of Jesus’ greatest statements – one more for the “I AM” collection:
トマスはちょっとかわいそうだと思います。彼はたった1つの疑惑の発言をしてしまったが故に、永遠に「疑惑のトマス」として知られるようになってしまいます。トマスはまた理解が遅く、時々イエスが言ったことを理解するのに時間がかかる弟子でもありました。これからお話しするのはトマスの質問についてですが、イエスの偉大な発言の一部になりました。
This must be either the most arrogant statement ever made, or the greatest.

Given the rest of Jesus’ teaching, His miracles, the nature of His death, His resurrection, and the pouring out of His Spirit at Pentecost, I’m going with [this is] ‘the greatest statement ever made’.
イエスの教え、イエスの奇跡、イエスの死の本質、イエスの復活、ペンテコステでの聖霊の注ぎの中で、これが今までの中でいちばん偉大な発言です。

- 6th conversation: Jesus vs Pilate
６つ目の会話はイエスとピラトの会話です。
Jesus’ conversation with Pilate is lengthy, and it’s one of the most dramatic in history. It began before Jesus’ flogging and continued after it. Here’s a snippet:
ピラトとイエスの会話は長く、歴史の中で最も劇的なものの一つです。その会話はイエスの鞭打ちの前に始まり、その後も続きました。ここにそのほんの一部を紹介しましょう。：
Even in the face of His crucifixion, Jesus could only speak Kingdom truths.
イエスが十字架にかけられることになっても、イエスは御国の真理だけを話すことができました。
Jesus still speaks words of revelation to a broken and hopeless world.
イエスは壊れてしまった絶望的な世に今でも驚くべき言葉を語ります。
His answer to Pilate’s last question was given to us earlier in chapter 14:6. (“I AM the way, the TRUTH and the life.)
ピラトの最後の質問に対するイエスの答えは、第14章6節で「わたしは道であり、真理であり、命である。」と、私たちに教えられています。

- 7th conversation: Jesus vs Peter
７つ目の会話はイエスとペテロの会話です。,/li>
This is one of the most beautiful conversations in the whole Bible. Remember, this occurs after the resurrection, and after Peter has shamed himself terribly by denying Jesus three times. At this point, Peter is probably expecting to be harshly rebuked by Jesus, if not rejected by Him entirely. But listen to how the conversation unfolds:
これは聖書全体の中で最も素晴らしい会話の一つです。ぜひ覚えておいてください。この話はイエスの復活の直後であり、ペテロがひどく恥知らで、イエスを3回否定した後に起こります。この時点で、ペテロはおそらくイエスによって厳しく叱責されることを予測していました。しかし、その時の会話はこのように展開していきます：
After all Peter had done in letting Jesus down, Jesus lovingly reinstates him as the leader of His church. That’s mercy. That’s grace. That’s real love.
ペテロがイエスを失望させてしまった後、イエスは愛をもってペテロを彼の教会のリーダーとして復活させます。それは憐れみです。それが恵みです。それは本当の愛です。
This same mercy, grace and love of God is available to all of us through the work of Jesus on the cross. Each of us, in our own way, are forgiven, and given a new life with a fresh purpose and direction in our lives. Our only response can be to love God with all of our hearts.
十字架上にあるイエスの働きを通して、ペテロと同様に、神のこの慈悲と恵みと愛が私たち全員に与えられます。私たちはそれぞれ赦され、新たな目的と導きとともに新しい人生が与えられたのです。これに対して私たちが唯一できることは、私たちの心のすべてで神を愛することです。

How can we know if someone is really who they say they are, or who other people say they are? (Open Question)

Now, Jesus was the most important and most wonderful person who ever lived. He said that He was the Son of God. He said that he was the only way that you can get to God. And he said actually that He was God Himself. [Image: Jesus – “I am God”]
- Have you ever heard your dad say that?
- Have you ever heard your mum say that?
- Have you ever heard a friend say that?
- I don’t even think I’ve heard Donald Trump say that (and he’s said a lot of stuff!)
That’s what Jesus said. But how can we know that it’s true?
Because it’s written in the Bible – by people who heard Him and knew Him
Because Jesus rose from the dead. You can’t do that unless you’re God.
Because Jesus lives today in our hearts and His Holy Spirit keeps doing God’s work in our world today.
Here’s the important thing: your relationship with your dad is not the same as your relationship with Donald Trump. With Donald Trump, you know about him because you see him on TV, but you don’t know him personally (and that’s not necessarily a bad thing). With your dad, you know him personally because you can talk to him and eat with him and barge in on him while he’s having a shower.
It’s the same with Jesus. He doesn’t just want you to know about Him by watching Him on the TV or reading about Him in a book. He wants you to talk with Him and walk with Him and enjoy Him by praying to Him, listening to Him in the Bible and living just like He did.
