Learning from the Wise Men

マタイによる福音書 2:1-12

Introduction

We don’t have information on the exact duration of the journey by “Magi from the east” in search of Baby Jesus. We can safely say that a considerable time had passed (at least, several months or up to about 2 years) after our Lord’s birth when they arrived in Jerusalem.
“東方の三博士”が誕生したイエス様を拝みに旅に出てから、どれぐらい経ったか正確には分かりませんが、かなりの時間だったというのが言えます。博士達がエルサレムに着いたのは少なくとも、イエス様が誕生してから数ヶ月から2年の月日が経っていました。

While some of the particulars of their journey are a mystery, there’s much we can discover from the wonderful example set by the Magi. Although they clearly were people of significant education, esteem, and wealth, they went in search of the King of kings.
博士達の旅の詳細は未だに解明されていなくても、彼等が見本となってくれた事について学べる事が沢山あります。彼等は明らかに教育を受けており、人々からも尊敬され、裕福でしたが、王の王を探しに旅に出ました。

We can learn that the Magi (wise men):
博士達からは次のことが学べます:

1. They were determined to meet with God – verse 1
   彼らは神様と会うのを決心していました(1節)

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem.

Matthew 2:1

イエスは、ヘロデ王の時代にユダヤのベツレヘムでお生まれになった。そのとき、占星術の学者たちが東の方からエルサレムに来て、

Magi were known to be astrologers (people who predict the supposed influences of the stars and planets on people and earthly events). This explains why God used a star to guide them to Jesus. God knew how He could get their attention.
この博士達は、天体（特に星）の現象に基づいて、人間の運命や将来を占う、占星術師として知られていました。神様が何故、星を使って彼らを導いたのかが、これで説明がつきます。そして、どうしたらこの博士達の注目をひけるか、神様知っていました。

As astrologers, it’s quite possible these Magi were sorcerers who interpreted omens and signs to gain power.
占星術師として、この博士達は魔術師で前兆などを読み、力を得ていた可能性もあると思います。

There are some clues as to the ethnicity and background of these men from the East, but there’s one thing we know for sure: They were not Israelites. They were Gentiles.
東方から来た博士達の民族やバックグラウンドについていくつか情報はありますが、１つ確かなのは、彼らはユダヤ人ではなく、異邦人だったと言う言葉です。

These men traveled from afar to see the Savior. They weren’t just curious researchers, but were determined to having a personal encounter with the newborn King.
彼らは救い主を拝みに遠くからやってきたのです。ただ単に好奇心の強い研究者ではなく、生まれたばかりの王を間近で体験出来るように決心をしていました。

In the same way, shouldn’t we make it a priority to pursue the Lord and spend time in His presence?
同じ様に、主を求め、神の元で過ごすのを私達は優先しないといけないでしょうか？

2. Their purpose is to worship Him – verses 2 & 11
   彼らの目的は礼拝する為だった- 2&11節

“And asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.'”

Matthew 2:2

“言った。「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。」”

マタイによる福音書 2:2

Right from the beginning, the Magi made the purpose of their visit clear: “We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
博士達は最初から訪れた目的を明確にしていました。「わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。」

They not only worshiped Jesus with their time, posture and words, but they also worshiped Him with a generous offering.
彼らの時間、姿勢と言葉だけでイエス様を礼拝せず、沢山の捧げ物を通しても礼拝しました。

“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh”

Matthew 2:11

“家に入ってみると、幼子は母マリアと共におられた。彼らはひれ伏して幼子を拝み、宝の箱を開けて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物として献げた。”

Did you know these gifts have special significance in the Old Testament and point to the One they came to worship?
旧約聖書では、この贈り物には重要な意味があり、礼拝しに訪れた方を指しているのを、皆さんご存知でしたか？

• Gold represents royalty (Psalm 72:15), and the gift of gold affirmed Jesus as the King of Kings.
  黄金は気高きさを表しています。(詩篇72:15) そして、黄金を献げる事によってイエス様が王の王である事を支持しています。
• Frankincense is related to the worship of God (Exodus 30:34) and the gift of frankincense acknowledges that Jesus is God.
  乳香は神様への礼拝と関連しています。(出エジプト30:34) 乳香を献げると言うことはイエス様は神である事を認めると言う事です。
• Myrrh was used to anoint people for special purposes (Exodus 30:22-25). The first time Jesus received myrrh was as a gift at His birth. The last times Jesus would be given myrrh were on the cross and during His burial.
  没薬は誰かを特別な理由で任命や選ぶ時に使用されていました。(出エジプト 30:22-25) イエス様が初めて没薬を献げ物として受け取ったのは誕生した時で、最後は十字架に掛かっていた時と埋葬のときでした。

This gift of myrrh points to the special purpose of Jesus’ life: He would die on the cross to save us from our sins and then be raised to life, victorious over death.
この没薬の献げ物はイエス様の人生の特別な目的を示しています。それは、イエス様が十字架にかかり、死に、私達を罪から救い、そして蘇り、死に打ち勝つということです。

If we have a genuine encounter with our Savior, the King of Kings, that should lead us to honor Him with our possessions. True worship demands nothing less.
私達が本当に救い主、王の王と出会ったなら、私達の財産を通して神を褒め称えるのに繋がると思います。本当の礼拝はそれを求めます。

May that be our focus also even though it’s been four (4) days already since Christmas Day. Instead of being distracted by all the trappings of the holidays, let’s take time to worship Jesus!
クリスマスから4日が経っていても、年末年始のバタバタ等だけに気を取られず、これらの事を覚えて、神様を礼拝する時間も作りましょう！

3. They were focused on their goal – verses 3-8
   彼らは目的に集中していました　(3-8節)

3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

Matthew 2:3,7,8

3 “これを聞いて、ヘロデ王は不安を抱いた。エルサレムの人々も皆、同様であった。
7 そこで、ヘロデは占星術の学者たちをひそかに呼び寄せ、星の現れた時期を確かめた。 8 そして、「行って、その子のことを詳しく調べ、見つかったら知らせてくれ。わたしも行って拝もう」と言ってベツレヘムへ送り出した。”

マタイによる福音書 2:3,7,8

When God gives us a dream to pursue, we often have to deal with a “King Herod” who tries to distract us along the way! The Magi proved to be “wise men,” able to discern that King Herod had no intention of furthering their mission.
神が私達に追いかける夢を与えたとき、ヘロデ王の様な、私達をその夢から気を逸らす人達に出会います。博士達はヘロデ王が、彼らの旅をこれ以上進まない様に計画立てていた事に気が付き、彼らは本当に賢人だと言うのを証明してくれました。

4. They changed course – verse 12
   彼らは別の道を通りました (12節)

And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Matthew 2:12

“ところが、「ヘロデのところへ帰るな」と夢でお告げがあったので、別の道を通って自分たちの国へ帰って行った。”

マタイによる福音書 2:12

The true worship of God will transform us and affect us to walk on a different route than we started on. It’s possible that we’ll even be given supernatural guidance or direction.
神様を本当に礼拝する事により、私達は変えられ、最初歩んでいた道から、違う方向に歩く様に影響されます。超自然な導きや方向が示される可能性もあります。

Paul and his missionary companions (Acts 16:6-10)
パウロと伝道師仲間たち　使徒の働き16:6-10

6 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. 8 So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. 9 During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Acts 16:6-10

“さて、彼らはアジア州で御言葉を語ることを聖霊から禁じられたので、フリギア・ガラテヤ地方を通って行った。 ミシア地方の近くまで行き、ビティニア州に入ろうとしたが、イエスの霊がそれを許さなかった。 それで、ミシア地方を通ってトロアスに下った。 その夜、パウロは幻を見た。その中で一人のマケドニア人が立って、「マケドニア州に渡って来て、わたしたちを助けてください」と言ってパウロに願った。 パウロがこの幻を見たとき、わたしたちはすぐにマケドニアへ向けて出発することにした。マケドニア人に福音を告げ知らせるために、神がわたしたちを召されているのだと、確信するに至ったからである。”

使徒の働き16:6-10

As you worship Jesus this holiday season, He wants to instruct you, change your life, and give you the breakthrough you need!
このホリデーシーズンで神様への拝を通して、神様はあなたを導き、あなたの人生を変え、そして今行き詰まって居る所から連れ出したいと思っておられます！

Conclusion

My biggest concern is that we will be overfamiliar with the Christmas story.
私の1番の心配は、私達がクリスマスストーリーを聞き慣れる事です。

You’ve read this story a lot of times. You’ve studied it, sung about it, and probably you’ve been a part of a Christmas play to depict it. You know the story too well.
この話しについて何回も聖書で読み、学び、歌い、そしてクリスマスの劇でやった事があるかもしれません。

You’re not alone. In fact, we can read the Christmas story itself to refresh our memory. During the very 1st Christmas, the religious leaders in Jerusalem missed the birth of Jesus because of familiarity.
そうだとしたら、あなたは1人ではありません。クリスマスストーリーを思い出すのに、また読んで見ましょう。1番最初のクリスマスの時、エルサレムに居た宗教の指導者たちはこの事をよく知っていた事によって、イエス様の誕生を逃しました。

You’ll notice that when Mary gave birth to our Lord Jesus, not a single religious person was invited. The people who should be the first to know about His birth — the spiritual and religious leaders of Israel — didn’t even have a clue.
マリアが主イエスを産んだ時に、宗教の指導者、誰1人呼ばれて居なかった事に気が付けます。イエス様の誕生を最初に知らないといけない人達、イスラエルの聖職者たちや宗教の指導者たちは、生まれた事を全然知りませんでした。

On the other hand, the Magi who had studied the Hebrew Scriptures came from the East because they had seen the guiding Star. They knew the Savior of the world had been born, but they didn’t know where.
その一方で、聖書を学んでいた博士達は星を見て、東方からやって来ました。世の救い主がお生まれになった事を知っていたが、どこかというのがわかりませんでした。

When they asked around, King Herod was deeply disturbed. He naturally thought of the Baby as his rival to the throne. So, he consulted the religious scholars.
色々聞き回った時にヘロデ王はすごく不安になりました。生まれた赤ん坊が自分の王の座へのライバルだと思い、色んな宗教学者に相談をしていました。

4 When he [Herod] had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'”

Matthew 2:4-6

“王は民の祭司長たちや律法学者たちを皆集めて、メシアはどこに生まれることになっているのかと問いただした。 彼らは言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者がこう書いています。 『ユダの地、ベツレヘムよ、 お前はユダの指導者たちの中で 決していちばん小さいものではない。 お前から指導者が現れ、 わたしの民イスラエルの牧者となるからである。』」”

マタイによる福音書 2:4-6

They knew exactly what Herod was talking about. After all, they’d been waiting for this moment for hundreds of years. They had discussed it, debated it and detailed it carefully.
ヘロデ王がなんの事を言っていたのか、祭司達はすぐに分かりました。何百年もの間、彼らは子の事について話し合い、説明したりしていたからです。

We should take that as a cautionary tale. We may know the story about the birth of Jesus very well. We can read it, teach it, and recite it from memory. But we can also completely miss the meaning of the story for ourselves.
この事を教訓としてぜひ活かして欲しいと思います。イエス様の誕生についてのお話しをよく知っているかもしれません。何回も読み、教えて、暗唱も出来るかもしれません。しかし、そのお話の本当の意味を私達自身が逃してしまう可能性もあります。

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day knew every religious tradition by heart, but they wouldn’t travel eight (8) kilometers from Jerusalem to Bethlehem to witness the arrival of God’s Son.
イエス様の時代の祭司達や律法学者達は宗教的な伝統を全て覚えていたと思います。しかし、エルサレムからベツレヘムに8kmもかけて行き、神の子の誕生を見に行きはしませんでした。

I would like to encourage you to take a few moments right now to give the Lord thanks for all He has done in your life. Like the Magi, make sure you are pursuing Him with your whole heart, allowing nothing to divert or distract you.
今この場で、今まで神様があなたにして下さった全ての事に感謝をする時を持ちたいと思います。博士達の様に、神様を心の全てで求め、他の物に気が紛れていないのか、もう一度確認をしましょう。

As God has blessed you, He also wants to make you a blessing in the lives of others (Genesis 12:2).
神はあなたを祝福したように、あなたを通して他の人を祝福したいのです。

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.”

Genesis 12:2

“わたしはあなたを大いなる国民にし あなたを祝福し、あなたの名を高める 祝福の源となるように。”

創世記 12:2

Following the example of the Magi, respond to the Savior’s birth by sowing a seed of your time and treasure to worship Him and help fill the earth with the knowledge of His glory (Habakkuk 2:14).
博士達の見本を習い、救い主の誕生には神様を礼拝する時間を作って応え、そして”水が海を覆うように 大地は主の栄光の知識で満たされる。”

You can be confident that when you follow the stunning example of the Magi… Your reward in Heaven will be great!
あなたは博士達の見事な例に従うと確信することができます…天国でのあなたの報酬は素晴らしいでしょう！
