Today I’d like to briefly share three testimonies with you.
今日はみなさんに3つのテステモニー、証言をお話ししたいと思います。
The first is the testimony of a man called Frank Jenner.
最初はフランク ジェナーと呼ばれる人物の証についてです。
Very few people have ever heard of Frank Jenner and even fewer knew of him while he was still alive. He died from cancer in 1977.
みなさん、フランク・ジェナーのことを聞いたことはないと思います。生前でも彼のことを知る人はほとんどいません。彼は1977年にガンで死にました。
In 1937, after serving in the Royal Navy, the U.S. navy and then the Australian navy (it’s a long story), Jenner quit the navy and gave his life to Jesus Christ.
1937年、英海軍、米海軍、そしてオーストラリア海軍、なぜそんなに転々と海軍を渡り歩いたのかというのは長い話しになりますが、それらの国で奉仕した後、ジェナーは海軍をやめ、イエスキリストに自身の人生を捧げました。
From that year and for the next 28 years until he was too sick to do so, Jenner ministered on George street of Sydney, accosting people with this question: “If you died within 24 hours, where would you be for eternity? Heaven or hell?”
キリストに人生を捧げると決意してからは、28年間、彼の病状が悪化するまで、ジェナーはオーストラリアのシドニーのジョージストリートで宣教活動をしました。彼の宣教活動とは次のような質問を人々に問いかけるのです。「もし、あなたが24時間以内に死亡した場合、あなたは永遠の命をどこでもらっていると思いますか？天国ですか地獄ですか？ 」
He usually didn’t wait for an answer, he just left it with them.
ジェナーは通常、人々の答えを待つことはせず、質問だけを放ち、その場を去りました。
He had no idea of the impact he was making in people’s lives.
彼は、そのような質問をすることによって、彼が人々に与えた影響については、全く知る由もなかったのです。
Of the more than 100,000 people he would have asked, many of them, shaken by the question, turned to Christ, including many who went on to lead ministries as ministers and army chaplains.
ジェナーは10万人以上の人々に質問を尋ねました。多くの人が質問で揺り動かされ、キリストを信じるようになりました。もともと宣教活動をするべき宣教師や軍の牧師でさえ、ジェナーの質問に揺さぶられ、強い影響を受けたのです。
(One of those was Noel Stanton, who went on to found the Jesus Army in 1969. Each of those people brought countless others to Christ.)
その一例は、1969年に「イエスの海軍」という宣教活動をするクリスチャンの団体を設立したノエル・スタントン（Noel Stanton）でした。「イエスの海軍」は、数多くの人々をキリストに導きました。
But what is really amazing about this story is what happened shortly before Frank’s death.
しかし、スタントンの生涯をお話するにあたって、実にすばらしい出来事があります。それは、フランクジェナーの死の直前に起こったことです。
Francis Dixon, a baptist minister from England, after hearing testimony after testimony of people whose lives had been changed by this one obnoxious little man asking questions in George street, decided to chase him down and find out who he was.
ある一人の不愉快な小柄な男、それはジェナーのことですが、ジョージ・ストリートで宣教活動として路上にたち、彼の聞いた質問によってたくさんの人々の人生が変わったという証言を聞いた時、英国のバプテスト牧師であるフランシス・ディクソンは、そのジョージストリートに立つ男を追いかけて、彼が誰であるのかをどうしても知りたいと思いました。
When he found him at his home in Sydney, sick and frail, he asked him if he was aware of all the people who had given their lives to Christ because of his ministry.
フランシスがシドニーの自宅で彼、ジェナーをついに見つけた時は、ジェナーはすでに病気のせいで衰弱しきっていました。そして、フランシスはジェナーに聞きました。ジェナーの質問によって、多くの人々が自分の生涯をキリストに捧げたことを知っていたかどうかを彼に尋ねました。
Frank wept.
フランクジェナーは泣きました。
He said that in the 28 years he had been witnessing, he never knew of a single person who had responded to his question in a lasting way.
ジェナーは、これまでの28年間で、彼の質問に対して「キリストが永遠の命をくれる」と答えた人は、誰一人として見たことがないと言いました。
For 28 years, he faithfully kept at his ministry, not seeing any of the results for himself.
28年間、ジェナーは忠実に彼の奉仕を続けましたが、自分が聞きたいような答えは一度も聞いたことがなかったのでした。しかし、実際はジェナーの忍耐強い奉仕活動が、そんなにもたくさんの人々をキリストへと導いていたのでした。
The second testimony I’d like to give this morning is that of a better known figure, the apostle Paul.
今朝、私がみなさんにお伝えしたい2番目の証言は、よく知られている人物、聖書の中の使徒パウロの証です。
Sometime around the year 61A.D., Paul was sent to Rome to stand trial before Caesar for preaching the gospel.
紀元後61年あたりのいつかの時代のことですが、パウロは福音を説いたために、当時の王シーザーに反感をかい、裁判にかけられるためにローマに送られました。
He believed this was what God wanted him to do.
パウロはその時、神がローマに行ってシーザーと裁判をせよと言っているのだと信じていました。
You can read for yourself the full and very graphic account of this which Luke records in Acts 27 and 28, but let me highlight just a couple of things.
ルカによる福音書27,28を読めば、非常に叙述的に記述されているパウロのとったその時の行動を読むことができますが、私はここで、いくつかのことを強調しておきたいと思います。
On the way there, Paul was shipwrecked.
ローマへの道中で、パウロの船は難破しました。
Amazingly Paul and the others on board survived, washed up onto a beach in Malta.
驚いたことにパウロと他の乗組員が生き残り、彼らは漂流し、マルタの海岸に打ち上げられました。
But with such a tragic happening, Paul had to be wondering if he was going in the right direction with his ministry.
しかし、このような悲劇的な出来事の中で、パウロは、神からの使命が本当に正しい方向に進んでいるのかどうかを疑問に思っていたに違いありません。
Three months later they sailed on to Rome in a ship that had the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux.
3ヵ月後、彼らは再び、双子の神カストルとポルックスのシンボルを掲げた船でローマに向かいました。
Paul wasn’t superstitious.
船にそのようなシンボルが付いていても、パウロは迷信などは信じず、気にしませんでした。
I don’t think he cared if the boat he was sailing on was a pagan boat or not but he must have seen the irony in being transported for Christian ministry in a boat dedicated to idols.
航海していた船が異教の船ではないのかということは、彼は気にしていなかったと思いますが、双子の神カストロとポルックスなどという偶像礼拝をしているような船でキリスト教の宣教のために自分が乗っているのは皮肉だなと思ったに違いありません。
When he arrived in Rome, he called all the leaders of the Jews together to share with them his testimony of Jesus.
パウロがローマに着いたとき、彼はユダヤ人のすべての指導者たちを集めて、イエスの証言を彼らに伝えました。
Some believed but most would not believe.
信じている人もいましたが、ほとんどの指導者たちはイエスのことを信じることはできませんでした。
Paul spent the rest of his days under house arrest in Rome until his death in the year 67/68AD.
パウロは紀元後67 か68年ごろの自らの死まで、キリストの教えを説いたが故に、迫害され、ローマの家で逮捕され、残りの生涯を家の中で費やしました。
Paul must have been wondering if he was going in the right direction with his ministry.
パウロは、彼の使命が正しい方向に進んでいるのか疑問に思っていたに違いないと思います。
Shipwrecks, idols, rejection.
難破船、偶像礼拝、そして拒絶。
But while under house arrest, Paul received many visitors and shared with them the gospel of Jesus Christ. During that time, he also wrote his letter to the Colossians, to the Ephesians, to the Philippians, his 2 letters to Timothy and to Titus.
しかし、家で逮捕され、監禁状態でいる間、パウロは多くの訪問者を自宅へ受け入れ、イエス・キリストの福音を彼らと分かち合いました。その間、彼はまた、コロサイ人、エペソ人、フィリピ人へ手紙を書き、ティモシーとタイタスへは2通の手紙を書きました。
How many lives have been changed through those letters that he wrote in prison?
彼が監禁された状況で書いた手紙によって、何人の人の人生が変わったと思いますか？もちろん、私たちの想像を超えた数の人々です。
Like Frank Jenner, Paul could never have imagined the impact that his ministry was having or would have on people in the days, years and centuries to come.
フランク・ジェナーは自分が一体何人の人々に影響を与えたのか知りませんでした。パウロも同様で、彼の宣教活動が長年、数年、そして何世紀にも渡って、人々に及ぼす影響を想像することなど、できませんでした。
I want to be very clear about something.
私はここで、はっきり言っておきたいことがあります。
This is not about recognition or fame. It’s about faithfulness.
ジェナーやパウロの名声や知名度に関することをお話ししたかったのではありません。私がこの人たちについて言いたかったのは、「神に忠実であった」ということです。
In ministry we don’t count the cost and we don’t seek personal glory.
奉仕をするときは、その労苦を考えたり、自分の名誉を追い求めたりしてはいけません。
But we do strive for faithfulness believing that God can take even the smallest offering and make it something wonderful.
しかし どんな小さな奉げものでも、神がすばらしいものに変えてくださると信じて、誠実であるよう努力することが大切です。
Remember the poor widow in Jesus’ time who put one little coin (one yen) into the offering?
イエスの話の中に、1セント、日本円にすれば1円ですが、それっぽっちしかお布施に入れることのできなかった貧しい未亡人の話を覚えているでしょうか。
Jesus praised her faithfulness.
しかし、イエスは彼女の忠実さを賞賛しました。
Remember the feeding of the 5000?
イエスが5000人の人を食べさせたことを覚えていますか？
What did the disciples have to feed a crowd of 5000 people?
弟子たちは五千人もの群衆をどのように食べさせましたか？
Five loaves and two small fish.
５斤のパンと2つの小さな魚しかありませんでした。
Hopeless!
なんと絶望的でしょう！
But Jesus said, “Bring them to me.”
しかし、イエスは言われました、「それをここに持ってきなさい」
Even the smallest offering, given in faith, can become something that changes the lives of many.
最少、少量の奉げものでも、信仰をもってささげるなら、大勢の人の人生を変えることになりえるのです。
The third testimony I’d like to share with you today is that of King David.
今日、私があなた方にお伝えしたい3番目の証言は、ダビデ王の証です。
We don’t know exactly what this testimony is about but Psalm 40 records a very uplifting account of faithfulness.
私たちはこの証言が何についてであるかは正確には分かりませんが、詩編40章はダビデ王の誠実さについて、非常に肯定的な記述をしています。
Let’s look at just the first 3 verses.
最初の3つの節だけを見てみましょう。
You can read the rest later at home.
残りの部分は後でご自宅で読んでください。
These three verses form a beautiful testimony of God’s work in David’s life.
これら3つの節は、ダビデの人生における神の働きについて、証言を美しく現しています。
Let’s break this down and apply it to our own lives.
詩篇４０章１から３節ををこれから詳しく見ていき、ダビデのような美しい証言を私たち自身の生活に当てはめてみましょう。
We don’t know what David’s trouble is here but he’s in a really bad place.
ダビデがこの節を買いた時、彼が困難に巻き込まれていたのかは分かりませんが、ダビデは相当悪い状況に置かれていたようです。
He likens it to a pit; a filthy, muddy pit.
ダビデは自らの悪列な状況を「穴のようだ。汚い、泥だらけの穴のようだ。」と表現しています。
His life, as we say in modern speak, is the pits.
彼の人生は、現代語で言うと、まるで穴、窪地、のようでした。
The first thing David does is wait patiently for God.
ダビデがまず最初にしたことは、耐え忍んで、神を待ち望むことでした。
We don’t wait very well nowadays, do we?
私たちは今日（こんにち）、待つことが得意ではありませんよね？
We have fast food, fast internet access, fast transport.
ファーストフード、高速インターネットアクセス、高速輸送などが開発され、そんな便利なものに囲まれています。
We just don’t wait well.
私たちは、待つことが苦手です。
But when we come before the Lord, that is exactly what we must learn to do.
しかし私たちが主の前に立つとき、その時こそ、私たちには学ばなければならないことがあります。耐え忍んで待つことを学ばなければなりません。
That’s what Frank Jenner did. He served patiently.
フランク・ジェナーは辛抱強く務めました。
That’s what Paul did. He persevered patiently.
パウロは忍耐強く我慢しました。
And God responded in marvellous ways.
そして神は、私たちが忍耐強く待ったので、素晴らしい答えをくださいました。
So too David waited before the Lord and then the Lord did three things:
ダビデも主の前に待ちました。そして主が次の三つのことをされるのを待ちました。
主はダビデに次の3つのことをなさいました。
- The Lord listened
主は聞いてくださる - The Lord delivered him
主はダビデを救い出してくださる - The Lord put a new song in his mouth
主は新しい歌をダビデの口に授けてくださる
When we wait before the Lord, we must expect to receive all three of these things.
私たちが主の前で耐え忍んで祈る時は、私たちはこれらの3つすべてを神から受け取ることができるのです。私たちの主は、聞いてくださる、救ってくださる、私たちの口に神を賛美するための歌を授けてくださるのです。
God does listen.
神はたしかに聞いてくださいます。
He hears us when we call.
神は聞きます。私たちが神を呼ぶ時、神は私たちに耳を傾けます。
God does deliver.
神はたしかに救い出してくださいます。
He takes us out of our pits and places us on solid ground where we stand firm.
神は私たちを穴のような窪地の外に連れ出してくれて、しっかりと立つことのできる固い地面に私たちを置いてくれます。
This might relate to specific troublesome circumstances in our lives, or it might relate to our general sinful nature.
ここでいう「穴」というのは、私たちの生活の中での特定の厄介な状況のことを表しているかもしれませんし、またはそれは一般的に、私たちの罪深い性質のことをさしているかもしれません。
The Bible teaches that all who are apart from God are under His condemnation.
神から離れてしまっている全ての人は、神の非難に値すると、聖書は教えています。
But all who turn to Christ are no longer under condemnation and are delivered from sin into eternal life. (John 3:16-18)
しかし、キリストと向かい合うすべての人は、もはや非難を受けず、罪から永遠の命に至るまで救われると聖書は言っています。(ヨハネによる福音書3:16-18)
Whether from specific trouble or sin in general, God delivers us.
神様は私たちを悩みや罪から救ってくださいます。
And (after deliverance) God restores joy to us.
そして、私たちにに喜びを取り戻してくださいます。
He places a new song of praise in our mouths.
神は私たちに神を賛美するための新しい歌を与えてくださいます。
What is the result of all this?
神が私たちに聞いてくださる、悩みや罪から救ってくださる、神への賛美を備えてくださる、ではこの先にはもっと何かがあるのでしょうか？ここから何が生まれるのでしょうか？
What is the result of God hearing us, and rescuing us and putting a song of praise in our hearts?
神が私たちの声を聞いて、私たちを救い、私たちの心に喜びの歌を与えてくれるというのは、どのような意味を表しているでしょうか？
Is that it?
一体何のことを言っているのでしょうか？
Does it end there with a song?
神が新しい歌を与えてくれるとありますが、実際には歌のことを言っていると思いますか？
Is God’s deliverance just for our personal benefit? No! It says that as a result,
神の救済とは私たちの個人的な救いのためだけですか？いいえ！決して自分だけの救いとなる救済のことを言っているのではありません。
なぜなら詩篇の４０章３節には、自分のためだけの救済だと思っていても、それが多くの人々の救いに繋がってゆくと書かれているからです。
“Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.”
「多くの人はこれを見て恐れ、かつ主に信頼するであろう。」と、書かれているからです。
This is exactly what we saw in the testimony of Frank Jenner.
これはまさにフランク・ジェナーの証言と同じです。ジェナーは自分のした質問でそんなにも多くの人々が神のことを知ることになったとは知りませんでした。
Many came to see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him.
ジェナーの質問により、多くの人が主を見て恐れを感じ、神を信じるようになったのです。
It’s what we saw in Paul’s testimony.
私たちがパウロの証言で見たものも同じです。
Many came to see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him.
パウロは監禁生活の中でコロサイ人、エペソ人、フィリピ人、ティモシーとタイタスへ手紙を書きました。パウロの手紙によって、多くの人が主を見て恐れ、主を信じるようになりました。
It’s what we see in David’s testimony.
それはダビデの証言で見られるものと同じです。
Many came to see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him.
ダビデ王は自らの苦悩の中からでも、神を賛美し、歌い、詩篇を書きました。それによって、多くの人が主を見て恐れ、主を信じるようになりました。
And it’s what we will see in our own testimonies when we wait patiently for the Lord and serve Him faithfully.
私たちが主を「忍耐強く待って」、忠実に奉仕すれば、私たちはそのような証をジェナー、パウロ、ダビデ王のように、自分で目の当たりに見ることができるのです。
Many will come to see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him.
私たちが忍耐強く、奉仕活動をすることによって、多くの人が主を見て恐れ、主を信じるようになるのです。
I’d like to conclude this message with a time of quiet meditation and prayer.
静かな瞑想と祈りの時をもって、このお話を締めくくりたいと思います。
Here’s my question for you:
ここに私からみなさんへの質問があります
What is your greatest struggle right now?
あなたが今いちばん苦労していることは何ですか？
What is the greatest cry of your heart?
ダビデ王が苦悩していたように、あなたの最大の心の叫びは何ですか？
What is the pit that you are in?
あなたが落ちてしまって、抜け出せない穴は何ですか？
If you have no particular struggle right now, give thanks for that.
あなたが今、特に苦悩を感じていないなら、そのことに感謝してください。
Praise God.
神を讃えてください。
Pray for deliverance.
救い出してもらうよう祈りなさい。 救出のために祈りましょう。
Ask God to show you the way out.
神が、あなたに道を示してくださるように祈ってください。
Ask for His provision that will lift you out of the pit and stand you on firm ground.
神が、泥沼のような穴からあなたをすくい上げて、堅い地面に立てるようにしてくださるように、助けを求めてください。
Trust in the unfailing love of God for this.
神の揺るぎない、無償の愛を信じてください。
Stand on His promises for this.
神の約束を信じてください。
If you have recently received deliverance from trouble or sin, use this time to give thanks.
あなたが最近、トラブル、困難、災難や罪から救われた場合は、この時間を使って感謝しましょう。
Ask for a new song to be put in your mouth.
ダビデ王のように、神への賛美ができるように、願い求めてください。
Ask for joy, for boldness and for a testimony to come from this so that many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him.
喜びと、大胆さを持って、証を神に求めてください。あなたの証によって、たくさんの人々が主を信じるようになります。
If God has recently delivered you and put a new song in your mouth, use this time to praise Him with it.
もし神が最近あなたを救ってくれたなら、この時間を使って神を賛美してください。
Pray.
