Romans 5
I’m sure you’ve seen TV commercials which always seem to offer more.
皆さんのうち誰でも、テレビの「さらにお得！」と言っているコマーシャルを見たことはおありでしょう。
“Buy this BBQ and get a set of cooking utensils absolutely free!” (The audience goes “Waaaa!”)
「今このBBQセットをお買いになると、この調理器具が無料でついてきます！」そして観衆が「わあ〜！」と言います。
“But that’s not all! We’ll also throw in a year’s supply of charcoal!” (The audience goes “Waaa!”)
「しかし、それだけではありません！さらに一年分のBBQ用の炭も無料でおつけします！」そして観衆が「わあ〜！」と言います。
“But that’s not all! We’ll also throw in absolutely free a pig on a spit!” (The audience goes “Waaa!”)
「しかし、それだけではありません！丸焼きの豚もおつけします！」観衆は「わあ〜！」と言います。
“But that’ not all! All this is yours for just “$7.99” (The audience goes “Waaaa!”)
「しかし、それだけではありません！全部合わせて、たったの７ドル９９セントです！」
観衆はさらに「わあ〜！」と言います。
This is pretty much what it’s like living a life ‘in Christ’!
実はこれが、まさに「神において生きる」ということなのです！
We have been looking at the book of Romans to lead us into a better understanding of what the gospel is, and to lead us into a greater maturity in our faith in Christ.
私たちは福音をより良く理解できるように、キリストへの信仰がより成長するようにローマ人への手紙を見て来ました。
So far we have seen in chapter 1: that the sinfulness of man has produced a righteous anger in God.
これまでは第1章を見てきました。：人間の罪深さが神の義なる怒りを生み出す。ということについて書かれていました。
In chapter 2: we saw that a righteous judgement will come upon all those who sin against God and against others.
第2章では、：公正な裁きは神に対して、そして人に対して罪を犯した者すべてになされるということを学びました。
And in chapter 3: we saw that no-one is righteous to escape God’s judgement, so God provided righteousness for mankind through faith in His Son Jesus Christ.
第3章では、神の裁きを免れる正しい人はひとりもいないので、御子イエス・キリストを信じる信仰を通して神は人類に義を与えられたということを学びました。
In chapter 4 Paul looks at the example of faith given us by Abraham.
第４章では、パウロは、アブラハムから学んだ信仰を手本としています。
And today we look in chapter 5: at this righteousness that we receive by faith in Christ and how it [the righteousness of God] shapes our lives in very observable practical ways, as well as in unseen spiritual ways. We start at verses 1-4:
今日、私たちは第5章を見ていきましょう。：キリストにある信仰によって受けることのできる「義」について学びましょう。そして、神の義が実際に目に見える形で、また目に見えない霊的なものも含めて、私たちの人生にどのように形作られていくかを考えましょう。
ローマ人への手紙５章の１節から４節を見ていきましょう。
One of the direct benefits we receive from being justified – made right with God – is that we have peace with God.
神によって「義」とされるということは、それは神と正しい関係にあることから直接受ける恵みのことですが、神によって平和、平安を得るということです。
（義とされる、つまり神と正しい関係にあることから直接受ける恵みの一つは、神と平和を得ていることです。）
We no longer have fear or confusion or guilt about our relationship with God.
私たちは、もはや神との関係について怖れや、困惑、罪悪感を持つ必要はないのです。
Our hearts can know the deepest peace.
私たちの心の奥底には平安があります。
This is a peace that is so wonderful it is described by Paul to the Philippians as “the peace which passes all understanding”.
その平安は素晴らしく、パウロはピリポの人々にこのように言い表しています。「何事も卓越した平安である。」と言っています。
It’s so wonderful it can be difficult to translate accurately.
その平安の表現は素晴らしすぎて、正確に翻訳することさえ難しいと思います。
I love the story of a missionary who took the gospel to a remote tribe.
私は、一人の宣教師が辺境の地に住むある種族に福音を伝えに行ったという、この話が好きです。
They received the gospel gladly but the language of the tribe had no word for “peace” (not in this context).
その種族たちは福音を喜んで授かりましたが、その種族たちの言語には、そもそも「平安、平和」という言葉自体が存在しませんでした。
It was one of the natives who came to him one day, thrilled, with an accurate translation of the word.
ある日、その種族のうちの一人が彼に向かって大喜びの様子で「Peace」という言葉の正確な訳が見つかったと言いました。
He said, “Pastor! Pastor! I know what peace means!
彼は、「牧師さん、牧師さん！PEACEという言葉の意味がわかりましたよ！
Peace is when your heart can finally sit down!”
PEACEとは、心がやっと座って休めるような、という意味です！
It’s a good translation, isn’t it?!
良い訳だとは思いませんか？」
Peace is when our heart is no longer restless, no longer wandering, no longer stubborn, no longer hard, no longer afraid, no longer lost.
平安、平和とは私たちの心がもはや掻き立てられるような状態ではなく、落ち着かないそわそわした状態でもなく、頑固な気持ちでもなく、頑なな気持ちでもなく、恐れもなく、さまよってしまっている状態でもありません。
Peace is when our heart can sit down and finally rest.
peaceとは私たちの心がついに落ち着いて座って、休む事ができる状態を言います。
That’s what faith in Christ brings to our hearts.
それが、私たちの心にもたらされるキリストにある信仰というものです。
But Paul says “Wait! There’s more. That’s not all!”
しかしパウロは言いました。「待ってください！それだけではありません！」
He says thatパウロは次のように言いました。
Let’s look at this huge and wonderful statement a bit more.
この雄大で素晴らしい明言をもう少し、詳しく考えていきましょう。
What we need to understand is that this is a godly process to work through.
私たちが理解しなければならないことは、「患難が忍耐を生み出し、 4 忍耐が錬達を生み出し、錬達は希望を生み出す、それが、神の御心にそった一連の、通過し克服しなければならない過程」ということです。
One quality leads to another quality which leads onto yet another quality.
一つのものが他の一つを導き、その一つがまた他の一つのものを導いていきます。
And what is important here – and where many people fail – is that working halfway through the process is pretty meaningless.
ここで大切なことは、また、たくさんの人々が失敗している問題は、過程の全てを通り過ぎず中途半端であれば、それはやり遂げたことにはなっていないし意味があまりないということです。
This is a process that needs to be worked through to the end.
このクリスチャンとしての成長の過程、段階は最後までやり遂げる必要があります。
We start with suffering.
最初の成長過程は苦悩から始まります。
Paul says “We glory in our sufferings”
パウロは言います。患難をも喜んでいる
Is Paul an idiot? How can he possible say this?
パウロは愚か者でしょうか？こんなことをなぜパウロは言うのでしょうか？
How can anyone honestly delight in their troubles or their sufferings?
どうして人々の苦悩や難関が喜びであると言ったりできるのでしょうか？
Firstly, we don’t delight because of our sufferings.
私たちは苦悩があるから喜ぶわけではありません。
We’re not called to enjoy suffering. That’s just masochism.
苦悩を喜んで受け入れる事が私たちの、神様からの召ではありません。もしそうだとすれば、全くの自虐的行為です。
But we glory in God in spite of our sufferings.
しかし、私たちは苦悩にもかかわらず神を賛えます。
Even in times of suffering, we find glory.
苦しい時でさえ、私たちは栄光を見出します。
How? Because of what it leads to.
どのようにでしょうか？それは導きによります。
And this is key: what it leads to.
そして、導きこそが重要な鍵だと言えます。
People who remain stuck in their sufferings without seeing them lead onto anything greater live lives of defeat and depression.
何よりも素晴らしいものに導かれているのもかかわらず、それが見えず苦悩から抜け出せない人々は、敗北感と挫折、意気消沈した気持ちの中で生きることになります。
How sad when lives are characterised by suffering from which no good is ever produced.
良い事が一つも生み出されることがない、苦悩に満ちた人生となってしまうのはなんと悲しいことでしょう。
There is a godly process to work through.
クリスチャンとして成長するためには、神の御心に添った一連の克服する過程や段階があるのです。
（神の御心に添った一連の克服する過程があるのです。）
Let’s continue with the verse.
ローマ人への手紙をもう一度読んでみましょう。
“we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance”
「患難をも喜んでいる。なぜなら、患難は忍耐を生み出し、 」と書かれています。
Perseverance is the next thing in the process.
次の過程は忍耐です。
Perseverance is one of the most important qualities we can develop in life.
忍耐は私たちが成熟することができる最も重要な性質の一つです。
Perseverance is absolutely essential to succeed at school, at work, in marriage, in the family, in friendships, in sport, in ministry and in our faith.
学校で成績を上げたり、仕事で業績を上げたり、結婚生活を円満なものにしたり、友情を深めたり、スポーツで業績を上げたり、宣教活動を遂行したり、信仰を持ち続けるにいたっても、絶対的に必要不可欠なものが忍耐です。
In the parable of the sower, Jesus said it’s the seed which falls in good soil that through perseverance produces a great crop.
種まきのたとえ話でも取り上げられますが、イエスは「忍耐という良い土壌に落ちた種は、素晴らしい収穫を得る」と言っています。
Even in good soil, success is not automatic.
良い土壌であったとしても、成功することは決っして当たり前で簡単なことではありません。
It requires perseverance.
忍耐が必要とされるのです。
In his letters to the seven churches in the book of Revelation, Jesus continually stresses that “He who overcomes” will enter the kingdom of God.
ヨハネの黙示録の中に書かれているイエスが教会に出した7つの手紙の中で、イエスはこうしたためています。「克服する者」が神の御国に入る事ができると、したためています。
Perseverance is essential.
クリスチャンとして成長するためには忍耐は必要不可欠です。欠かす事はできないのです。
But it’s not the end. That’s not all!
「しかし、待ってください！それだけではありません！」
If we only get that far through the process then we are just miserable survivors.
もし私たちが、ただ単に我慢する、忍耐をするという過程を通り過ぎるだけだったとしたら、私たちはあまりにも惨めではありませんか？
There is a godly process to work through.
クリスチャンとして成長するためには、神の御心に添った一連の克服する過程があるのです。
（神の御心にそった一連の克服する過程があるのです。）
Because perseverance is to produce character.
なぜなら、忍耐は「気質」「性質」を生み出すからです。
（忍耐は錬達を生み出す）
Character development is the next step in the process.
苦悩の後、「人格を形成する」ということが次の段階になります。
Persevering through suffering is like going through a refining process.
苦しみを超えるための忍耐は、私たちを鍛錬する「過程」「段階」なのです。
If you stay in the fire, you just get burnt.
もしあなたが火の中に飛び込み「ずっといたら」、火傷するだけでしょう。
If you pass through it, you come out purified, beautiful and of great worth.
しかし、もし火の中を「くぐり抜けるだけ」だったら、まるで精錬される金のように清められ、美しく鍛錬された、素晴らしい価値あるものになります。
What does this mean in real-life terms?
このことは実際の私たちの人生において、どのような意味をなすのでしょうか？
It means we learn to take on the character of God.
その意味は、神の「性質、気質、人格」になることを学ぶということです。
It means that through our trials,
その意味は、
私たちは試練を通して、
We must learn what it means to truly forgive those who have hurt us.
私たちを傷つけた人たちを心から赦すとはどういうことかを 学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to be patient with those who frustrate us.
私たちをいらだたせる人たちに対して忍耐強くあることを学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to trust that God really is good.
神は本当に良いお方であると信頼することを学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to be faithful when we feel like giving up.
あきらめてしまいたい時に忠実であるあることを学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to have self-control when we are tempted.
誘惑されるときに自制することを学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to be kind when people have first treated us harshly.
私たちにつらく当たる人たちに親切であることを学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to overcome evil with good.
善をもって悪に打ち勝つことを学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to be gentle in the face of anger.
怒りを前にして優しくなることを学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to rejoice in all circumstances.
どんな状況にあっても喜ぶことを学ばなければなりません。
We must learn to love those who are not deserving of our love.
私たちの愛を受けるべきでない人たちを愛することを学ばなければなりません。
There are so many opportunities for character development by persevering through hardships.
苦しいこと、苦難を克服した忍耐により、私たちが人格形成をする機会はいくらでもありますが、
And there are so many opportunities to remain bitter and lost and with an undeveloped character by not persevering through hardships.
苦しいこと、苦難を我慢しなかったことにより、私たちが苦い思いをし、さまよってしまい、人格形成に失敗してしまう場合も、いくらでもあります。
But that’s not all. There’s more!
「しかし、待ってください！それだけではありません！」
You can read about developing character by persevering through hardships in almost any self-help book.
あなたは、苦難を自身の忍耐力で乗り切る「自己啓発の本」を読むこともできますよね。
If we only develop character then we run the risk of just being another nice guy.
もし私たちが自分の「人格」を形成しただけであったら、ただの「いい人」になってしまう恐れがあるのです。
Remember, there is a godly process to work through.
思い出してください。クリスチャンとして成長するためには、神の御心に添った一連の克服する過程、段階があるのです。

It’s this next part in the process that is really exciting.
これから、さらに次の成長過程についてお話しします。
Character produces hope.
練達による「気質」は「希望」を生み出します。
（錬達は希望を生み出します。）
If this seems like a bit of an anti-climax it’s because you are looking at hope as the world looks at hope.
「なんだ希望か」とあっけなく感じられたら、それはこの世のありふれた「希望」のように、あなたも同じような「希望」のことを考えているからだと思います。
The hope of the world is unfounded optimism.
この世でいう「希望」は、なんの根拠もない楽観的な考えです。
“I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow”.
「明日雨が降らなければいいな。」
“I hope my dog doesn’t rip a hole in the flyscreen again.”
「犬が網戸をまた壊さなければいいのにな。」
“I hope I get a raise at work.”
「給料が上がればいいな。」
“I hope she still loves me.”
「彼女が僕のことをまだ愛してくれていたらいいな。」
There’s no problem with such thinking but it’s nothing more than unfounded optimism.
それらのような考えを持つことが全く問題があるわけではありません。しかし、そのように「希望」を持つことは、なんの根拠もない楽観的な考えであることに変わりはりません。
The hope in the Bible – and right here in Romans 5 – is the blessed assurance of our future destiny in God.
ローマ人への手紙５章の中に書かれていますが、私たちが「神と永遠を過ごす」という恵まれた確信が、聖書にある「希望」なのです。
Hope in the Bible is confidence that God will keep His promises.
聖書の中にある「希望」は、神が私たちとの約束をお守りになられるという確信のことを言います。
So “we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope” that the victory Jesus won on the cross is also ours!
ですから、「患難をも喜んでいる。なぜなら、患難は忍耐を生み出し、 4 忍耐は錬達を生み出し、錬達は希望を生み出すことを、知っているからである。」とあるのは、イエスが十字架の上で勝利したこと、それが私たちの勝利でもあるということを言っています！
Someone recently criticised me as a person who was unable to understand them or sympathise with their suffering.
ある人が最近、私が、「人の苦悩を理解できず、同情心を持っていない」と批判しました。
I took this as an enormous compliment to my faith.
私はこの批判をあえて、自分の信仰に対しての大いなる称賛だと思っています。
They said that because I was always Mr. Happy, always full of joy that I could never understand their suffering.
その人は私が「いつも幸せで、喜びに満ち溢れているので、人々の苦悩や苦しみは決してわからない」と言いました。
At this point I become a bit like Paul and want to boast about my sufferings.
この時、私は少しパウロのような心境になりました。そして私の苦悩を自慢したくなりました。
I’ve been abused and publicly humiliated for my faith.
私は、公衆の面前で自分の信仰を辱められたことがあります。
I’ve known serious illness.
私は、深刻な病を経験しました。
I’ve known financial hardship.
私は、経済的な危機にも直面しました。
I’ve held the hand of the dying.
私は、死にゆく人を見送ったこともあります。
I’ve known so much hardship that I’ve written two books about it!
私は、言い切れないぐらいの苦労をしました。あまりに、たくさんの苦悩を経験してきましたので、自分の苦悩について書き留め、本を自費出版したぐらいです！二冊も！
But my critic was right about one thing.
しかし、そのような私に対する批判は、ある一面、当たっています。その一面とは、
I remain full of joy.
「私は喜びに満ち溢れている」ということです。
This is because by the grace of God I have persevered through my hardships, developed outstanding character:), and have the hope of God in my heart.
私の喜びは神の恵みによるものです。私が耐えてきた苦しみや、苦難によって作られた人格、そして私は心に神の「希望」という「確信」を持っているからです。
I can testify that this is a real process of maturity for all believing Christians.
私はここで言いたいと思います。これらの成長過程は、どんなクリスチャンにとっても、霊的に成長するからには必要不可欠な、通り過ぎなければいけない過程なのです。
But that’s not all! 「しかし、それだけではありません！」
This process doesn’t end in hope.
この通らなければいけない過程は「希望」にたどり着いただけで終わるわけではありません。
There’s one more wonderful realisation.
「希望」ほど素晴らしい気づきや発見はありません。
And it’s this:
それはここに書かれています。
This is the climax of the gospel.
これこそが福音の醍醐味です。
Yes, our sufferings can have meaning;
そのとうりです。私たちの苦悩、苦難には意味があります。
yes, there is value in persevering;
そのとうりです。忍耐、耐え忍ぶということには価値があります。
yes, God will produce in us a cracker character if we allow Him to;
そのとうりです。私たちが神に従い苦悩するなら、神は私たちに素晴らしい人格をくださいます。
yes, we can be sure of our salvation in Christ;
そのとうりです。私たちはキリストによる救いを確信することができます。
but most of all, God has filled our hearts with His love through the Holy Spirit which he gave to us at the time we first put our faith in Christ.
しかし何よりも大切なことは、神は私たちの心を聖霊を通して神の愛で満たしてくださること。そしてその聖霊は、私たちが苦難を乗り越える度に与えられ、私たちがキリストにおける信仰を何よりも一番に考えた時に、満たされるということです。
With this love of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, we glory in our sufferings because we know that God has bigger plans for us that our sufferings. Amen!
私たちの心の中にある聖霊の愛をもって、私たちは苦悩、苦難を賛えましょう。なぜなら神は今私たちが直面している苦悩よりも、もっと大きな計画を私たちのためにお持ちだからです。
How can we have such confidence?
では、どうしてそこまで自信を持つことができるでしょうか？
How can we sure this isn’t just hype?
どうして、誇大な表現ではないと確信できるのでしょうか？
How do we know we’re not just getting caught up in some very positive thinking.
どうして、私たちが、単に前向きな考えに囚われているだけではないと言い切れるのでしょうか？
Let’s read on just a little more and find out.
もう少し読んで確かめてみましょう。
The gospel of Jesus isn’t just talk.
イエスの福音はただ単にお話だけではありません。
The gospel of Jesus is a demonstration of God’s love.
イエスの福音は神の愛の実証です。
It was a divine intervention in the history of men when God came down in human form, Jesus Christ.
人間の歴史にとって神が人間の形をとり、イエスキリストとなってこの世に現れたのは神聖な事実でした。
Jesus revealed the mind of God to us through His teaching.
イエスはご自分の教えを通して神の心を私たちに明らかにしてくださいました。
Jesus revealed the power of God to us through his miraculous works.
イエスはご自分の奇跡的なわざを通して神の力を私たちに明らかにしてくださいました。
And Jesus demonstrated the love of God to us by dying on the cross in the place of sinful man to make righteous all those who call on his name in faith.
そしてイエスは御名を信じて呼び求める者すべてを義とするために、罪深い人間の代わりに十字架の上で死んでくださり、神の愛を私たちに実証してくださいました。
We have a wonderful gospel!
私たちには素晴らしい福音があります！
The love of God reaches into our lives now, shaping who we are and giving great meaning to our lives, and assuring us of eternity with God in the age to come.
神の愛は今日の私たちの生活に入り込み、私たちの人格を形取り、私たちの人生に素晴らしい意味をもたらしてくれます。そして神は未来永劫に、永遠を約束してくださいます。
