I have a confession to make. This might come as a shock to some, especially coming from a pastor, and especially at a Christmas service:
今日私はあることを告白したいと思います。今からする告白は何人かの人々に衝撃を与えるかもしれません。特にクリスマスの礼拝で、牧師が告白するのですから。
I don’t like religion.
私は宗教が好きではありません。
But you know what I discovered? God can’t stand religion either.
私が何を言いたいかお分かりでしょうか？実は、神様も宗教が好きではないのです。
Listen to what he said through the prophet Amos:
神が預言者アモスを通して何を言ったか、これから読みますので、よく聞いてください。
What are we to make of this, especially at Christmas time when we have all the tinsel out and the food prepared and we’re singing all the songs and we’re all having a good time together?
私たちはここに書かれていることをどのように理解すれば良いのでしょうか？特に、私たちがクリスマスの飾りを用意したり、食べ物を用意したり、クリスマスの歌を歌ったり、一緒に楽しい時間を過ごすクリスマスの時期に、どのように理解すれば良いのでしょうか？
It’s the Christmas message which explains what we’re to make of this. Basically it’s this: Christmas is not really about religion, it’s about relationship.
私たちがこのことをどのように理解するのかを説明することが、実はクリスマスのメッセージということになるのです。基本的にはこういうことです：クリスマスは実は、宗教的なことではなく、神との関係についてなのです。

At Christmas time we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Jesus was God in human form. When He was born, the Kingdom of God broke into the Kingdom of men, and when that happened, our relationship potential with God changed. That’s why Jesus came: to restore our relationship with God.
クリスマスの時、私たちはイエスの誕生を祝います。イエスは人間の形をした神様でした。イエスが生まれたとき、神の王国は人の王国に変わってしまい、その時から、私たちと神との関係が変化しました。それがイエス様が来た理由です。私たちと神との関係を回復させるためです。（イエスが来たのは、私たちの神との関係を回復するため）
Jesus said,
イエスはこう言いました。
He also said,
イエスはまた、こうも言いました。
Sounds great. But what does it mean?
いいことが書いてありますね。しかし、それは本当はどういう意味でしょうか？
The thief is the devil. He hates God and he hates God’s creation. So he comes to steal and kill and destroy us and our families.
盗人は悪魔です。悪魔は神を嫌い、神の作ったものが嫌いです。だから、悪魔は私たちと家族を盗んで殺して破壊するようになります。
He does this in three ways:
悪魔はつぎの3つの方法で私たちを破壊しようとします：
- He creates doubt so that people will reject God.
悪魔の一つ目の破壊の方法は、私たちに神を拒ませる為に、疑いを生じさせます。His favourite words are “Did God really say that?” He wants you to believe that either God doesn’t exist or if He does, He doesn’t care about you, and even if He does care, you don’t have to care about Him.
悪魔の好きな言葉は、「神は本当にそれを言いましたか？」という言葉です。悪魔はあなたが神が存在しないと信じて欲しいと願っています。悪魔はあなたのことなど少しも気にかけていません。気にかけていたとしても、あなたが悪魔を気にする必要は全くありません。 - He fills our world with countrerfeit philosophies so that people will replace God. (‘Countrerfeit philosophies’ is a fancy term for big fat lies.)
悪魔の二つ目の破壊の方法は、神を取り替えるように私たちの世界を偽の哲学で満たすということです。（大きな嘘という言葉を美化したものが偽りの哲学です。）Materialism, greed, vanity, lust, selfishness, gluttony and drunkenness, relative truth, and religion. All of these are idols that the devil sets up in our lives to replace God. And people love them, at first anyway.
物質主義、貪欲、虚栄心、欲望、利己主義、貪欲と酔い、見せかけの真理、そして宗教。これらのすべては、悪魔が私たちの生活の中で神の代わりに置き換えられた偶像礼拝です。そしてとにかく、人々はそれらを好む傾向にあります。 - He leads people to sin so that they will be dead to God.
悪魔の三つ目の破壊の方法は、神に無神経にさせるように人を罪に導くということです。Sin breaks our relationship with God and alienates us from His holiness.
罪は私たちの神との関係を壊し、私たちを聖なるものから離れさせます。
Listen to what the apostle Paul wrote:
使徒パウロが書いたことを聞いてみましょう：
This is why I don’t like religion and this is why God hates religious meetings that are all ceremony and no power.
ですから、私が冒頭で宗教が好きではないと言ったのはこのような理由からなのです。神もこのような理由で宗教的な集まりや儀式は嫌っておられ、そこにはなんら霊的な力はありません。
If you see a place of worship with symbols and bells and smells and music – doesn’t matter if it’s a mosque, a temple, a synagogue or a church – but no power of God to save from sin and change lives, don’t go in there.
形式的な儀式としてや鐘、お香の香りや音楽として礼拝の場を理解しているなら、それがたとえ、イスラム教のモスク、寺院、ユダヤ教のシナゴーグ、キリスト教の教会だとしても関係ありません。なぜなら、そこには、私たちを罪から救い私たちの命を変える神の力はないからです。
Remember, Christmas is not about religion and it’s not about rules, it’s about relationship. A relationship with God. When Jesus was born, the Kingdom of God broke into the Kingdom of men, and when that happened, our relationship potential with God changed.
覚えておいてください、クリスマスは宗教に関するものではなく、決まりごとについてではなく、神と関係を持つことについてです。神との関係。イエスが生まれたとき、神の王国は人の王国に変わってしまい、その時から、私たちと神との関係が変化してしまいました。
（クリスマスは宗教についてではないし、規則についてでもありません。神と関係をもつことについてです。）
The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy but Jesus came to bring full life and freedom through a new relationship with God. Freedom from doubt. Freedom from the lies of materialism, greed, vanity, lust, gluttony and drunkenness, relative truth, and freedom from the confines of religion. Freedom to have and enjoy a relationship with God.
悪魔は私たちの人生に盗みを働き、殺し、私たちの人生を破壊する為にこの世に来ました。これとは対照的に、イエス様は、神との新しい関係を通して私たちに完全な人生と自由をもたらす為に来られました。物欲という思いから自由にしてくれて、貪欲、虚栄心、欲望、食欲と酔い、見せかけの真理、そして宗教という縛り、制限から私たちを自由にしてくれます。そして私たちに、神との関係を楽しむ自由をくださいます。（イエスは神と新しい関係をもつことを通して満たされた人生と自由をもたらすために来ました。 物質主義、貪欲、うぬぼれ、情欲、暴飲暴食、酒酔い、相対的真理、 宗教 神との関係）
How does Jesus do this?
では、イエスの存在はどのように関わってくるのでしょうか？
Jesus had an exceptional birth and He had an exceptional death, and pretty much everything in His life in between was exceptional, too. His teaching was exceptional. His power to heal was exceptional. His ability to forgive those who had done the unforgivable was exceptional. His ability to love the unlovable was exceptional.
イエスの出産は人とは違っていましたし、イエスの死も人とは違っていました。もちろん、イエスの人生も人並みではありませんでした。彼の教えは際立っていました。彼の癒しの力は際立っていました。容認できないことをした人を許す彼の能力は際立っていました。どうしても愛する事のできない人を愛する彼の能力は際立っていました。
His life was filled with miracles. And this life of miracles was bracketed by the two greatest miracles of all.
イエスの人生は奇跡に満ちていました。そして彼の奇跡の人生は二つの偉大な奇跡で総括されます。
With His birth (the first great miracle), which we are celebrating tonight, Jesus left the glory of His throne in heaven and became a helpless baby in the arms of a young Jewish woman. Tonight we celebrate that great miracle in which God Himself became a man.
今宵私たちが祝うイエスの誕生、それは最初の偉大な奇跡、一つ目の奇跡となります。イエスは天国での栄光の王冠を捨てさり、ユダヤ人の若き女性の元に弱い赤子の姿となりこの世に現れたのです。
With His death and resurrection (the second great miracle), Jesus took the punishment for our sins, exchanging His purity and holiness for our sinfulness, and demonstrated his power over sin and death.
イエスは死と復活、これが第二の偉大な奇跡となりますが、このイエスの死と復活をもって、私たちの罪のために赦しをくださり、私たちの罪を聖なるものに変えてくださり、罪を取り去るという業と奇跡の死を持ってご自身の力を示されました。
That’s the crux of it. Jesus resurrected from the dead. Three days after dying, he rose from the dead. If you go to Jerusalem today you won’t find Jesus’ body anywhere. It’s not there. They couldn’t find the body because Jesus resurrected.
そのことが重要なポイントなのです。イエスは死から復活しました。死んだ3日後、彼は生き返りました。今日（こんにち）エルサレムに行っても、どこにもイエスの死体を見つけることはできません。そこにはありません。イエスは復活したので、誰もイエスの体を見つけることができませんでした。
This caused all sorts of problems for the people who had killed him and it became a source of great joy and wonder for the young church which then began to explode with growth. It grew because people were overjoyed to be free from sin and to experience a real relationship with God Himself by believing in Jesus.
イエスの死体を発見できなかったことは、彼を殺した人々に、ありとあらゆる問題を引き起こし、驚異的に成長し始めた若い教会にとっては、大きな驚きと喜びとなりました。そして教会たちは成長していきました、なぜなら人々は罪から解放され、イエスを信じることによって神自身と真の関係を経験することを喜びと感じたからです。
Jesus came to bring a true form of godliness with power. Remember, it’s not about religion or rules or even riches. It’s about relationship with God.
イエス様は奇跡の力を持って「神からの真実」をもたらされました。 覚えておいてください、それは宗教や規則や富についてではありません。それは神との関係についてです。（宗教や規則、富についてではなく、神との関係についてです。）
When Jesus was born, he brought the presence of God into our world. When Jesus resurrected, He conquered sin and death, and brought new life.
イエスは生まれたとき、神の存在を私たちの世界にもたらしました。 イエスは復活したとき、罪と死を征服し、私たちに新しい命をもたらしました。
When we put our faith in Jesus and turn from our sins, Jesus forgives us our sins and shares His new life with us.
私たちが信仰をもち、罪から立ち返れば、イエス様は私たちの罪を赦し、私たちと新しい人生、命をわかち合ってくださいます。
When we put our faith in Jesus and turn from our sins, we receive a special gift from God. That gift is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus.
私たちがイエスに信仰をもち、罪から立ち返れば、私たちは神から特別な贈り物を受け取ることができます。その賜物は聖霊であり、イエスの御霊です。
If you want a gift this Christmas, there’s nothing better than the gift of the Holy Spirit.
あなたがクリスマスの贈り物が欲しいなら、聖霊の賜物よりも優れた贈り物は他にありません。
The Holy Spirit continues the work that Jesus began, renewing our lives and giving us a true form of godliness with power:
聖霊は、イエスがこの世で始めた仕事を引き受け、働き続け、私たちの人生を新しくし、その力を持って神から生まれる真実を私たちにくださいます。
- The power to turn from the sin in our lives.
罪から立ち返る力 - The power to restore the broken relationships in our lives.
壊れた関係を修復する力 - The power to forgive those who have hurt us.
傷つけられた人を赦す力 - The power to see ourselves and others as God sees us.
神が見るように自分自身や人を見る力 - The power to heal the physical and mental illnesses in our lives.
身体的、精神的な病気を癒す力 - The power to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of God.
神の愛がどれだけ広く、長く、高く、深いかを把握する力
The Bible tells us that God loves the world so much – not just Christians, not just religious people, not just Jewish people not just rich people or poor people, or black, white or yellow people, not just straight people or beautiful people – but the whole world – God loves the whole world so much that He gave His only Son Jesus so that whoever believes in Him would not die but have eternal life.
聖書は、神が単に、宗教的な人々だけにではなく、単に富裕層や貧しい人々だけにではなく、同性愛主義者でない人や美しい人々だけでなく、黒人や白人や黄色人種でもなく、ユダヤ人だけではなく、キリスト教徒だけでなく、神は世界を非常に愛しているということを教えてくれます。全世界 – 神はこの全世界を非常に愛し、神の唯一の御子イエスをこの世に賜わったので、彼を信じる者は誰も死ぬことはなく、永遠の命を得ることができます。
That’s why we celebrate Christmas. Because it is the realisation of God’s great plan to save us and to restore our relationship with Him through Jesus.
だから私たちはクリスマスを祝うのです。私たちを救い、イエスを通して神との関係を修復させる神の素晴らしい計画の実現がクリスマスだからです。（クリスマス イエスを通して私たちを救い、神との関係を回復するための神のすばらしいご計画の実現）
It has nothing to do with food or symbols or music or smells or clothes or trees or turkeys or Santa Claus.
それは食べ物や形式的な儀式や、音楽やお香の匂いや服やクリスマスツリーや七面鳥やサンタクロースとは関係がありません。
We don’t sing tonight because we are religious. We sing because we’re so grateful to have a relationship with God.
だから、私たちは今夜は宗教だから歌うわけではありません。神との関係を持つことにとても感謝しているから歌うのです。
If you are turned off by religion but you want to be right with God, this is the right place to be and this is the right time. You can start a relationship with God tonight. If you believe in the Christmas miracle – that God sent His Son Jesus into the world to live and die for you, and if you turn away from your sins, put your faith in the risen Jesus and commit to following Him – then you can enter new life tonight.
あなたが宗教だから気が進まないと思っているなら、でも、神に正してもらいたいと望んでいるなら、今宵、あなたは、ちょうどその場所にいるのです。それがこの教会です。あなたがクリスマスの奇跡を信じるなら、あなたは今宵、神との関係を持ち始めることができます。神が御子イエスをこの世に送ってくださったのは、あなたのために生き、死んでくださるためであり、罪から立ち返り、死からよみがえったイエスに信仰をおき、従っていく決意をするなら、今晩、あなたは新しい人生を始めることができるのです。それがクリスマスの奇跡です。
We’re going to take communion shortly. I’m going to invite everyone to examine their lives, silently confess their sins to God in prayer, and make a commitment to give their lives to Jesus, to receive His Holy Spirit in their hearts and to follow Him every day. If you’ve never done this before but this sounds good to you, please come forward with the others to receive the elements of communion and start a new life with God.
私たちはまもなく聖餐式を始めます。私はみなさんに自分の人生を振り返ってもらう為に祈り、自分の罪を静かに神に告白し、イエスに自分の命、人生を委ね、聖霊を受け入れ、毎日彼に従うことを約束することをお勧めしたいと思います。以前、一度もそのようなことをしたことがないが、あなたにとって良いと思うなら、他の人たちと一緒に前に来て、聖餐式のものを受け取り、神と新しい人生を始めるようにしてください。
In communion, the bread is a symbol of the body of Jesus and the grape juice is a symbol of the blood of Jesus. Eating the bread and drinking the juice is an outward sign of an inward change. It’s an outward sign of a new life starting within. Receiving them in faith, you begin a relationship with God, and a life in Christ.
聖餐式では、パンはイエスの体の象徴であり、ぶどう汁はイエスの血の象徴です。パンを食べ、ジュースを飲むことは心の中に起こる変化を外に向けて表すということです。それは心の内から始まる新しい人生を外に現わす印です。信仰を持って聖餐式を受ける事によって、あなたは神との関係とキリストと歩む人生を始めるのです。（これらを信仰をもって受けて、神との関係、キリストにある人生が始まります。）
