Introduction

In the 2018 State of Theology Study sponsored by Ligonier Ministries, LifeWay Research polled 3,000 Americans and asked them a number of questions about God, Christian ethics and religion in general.
2018年にライフウェイ研究グループのリゴニアミニストリーがスポンサーをした「神学の状況」についての研究では、3000人のアメリカ人に対して調査を行い、神様、クリスチャン道徳や宗教についていくつかの一般的な質問をしました。

62 percent of millennials believe only those who trust in Jesus Christ alone as their Savior receive God’s free gift of eternal salvation (up from 53 percent in 2016)

64 percent of millennials believe there will be a time when Jesus Christ returns to judge all the people who have lived (up from 55 percent in 2016)

Focusing on the last point, how does that square with the confession of historic Christianity?

The Apostles’ Creed reads in part:

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

We already mentioned last week, it is generally thought that the Apostles’ Creed represents an expansion of a very simple and basic confession of faith: “Jesus is Lord!” Christians have always insisted that there is something qualitatively different about Jesus that sets Him apart from all other religious teachers or thinkers.
先週にも触れましたが、使徒信条はシンプルで信仰告白の基本である「イエス様は主です」を拡張したものだと考えられています。クリスチャンはいつもイエスキリストは他の宗教指導者や思想家とは質的に違うと主張してきました。

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

There is a vitally close connection between the Person and the message of Jesus. What Jesus did and the impact He made on those who encountered Him make His message important. In Jesus the message and the messenger are one and the same.
イエス様という「人」とイエス様のメッセージに極めて重要なつながりがあります。イエス様が成し遂げたこととイエス様が出会った人々に与えた影響は、イエス様のメッセージを重要にしています。イエス様にあって、そのメッセージとメッセンジャーが合体して一つになります。

So , what do we believe concerning Jesus Christ? The Apostles’ Creed identifies a number of key beliefs that allow us to understand why Jesus matters so much to Christians.
さて、イエス・キリストに関して私たちは何を信じていますか。使徒信条のいくつかの基本信念を見てクリスチャンにとってのイエス様の重要性を見てみましょう。

1. It identifies that Jesus is the “Son of God”
   使徒信条はイエス様を「神様の御子」として特定しています。

1. Although all believers are children of God in some sense of the word, Jesus is singled out as the Son of God. In the creed, saying that Jesus is the “Son of God” is the same as saying that Jesus is God.
   ある意味では全ての信者は神様の子供であることは確かですが、イエス様だけは「神様の御子」として認められています。使徒信条ではイエス様は「神様の御子」であることは「イエス様は神様です」と同じ意味になります。
2. It is obvious that the first Christians worshiped and adored Jesus Christ—a practice that continues today. If Jesus were just another human being, a creature like the rest of us, then the New Testament writers would be guilty of worshiping a creature! But Jesus ought to be worshiped and adored precisely because He is God.
   初代のクリスチャンはイエス・キリストを崇敬し尊敬していました。それは今も続いています。もしイエス様が私たちと同じくただの人間であったなら新聖書を書いた人たちは「ただの人間を尊敬した」ということになります。しかし、イエス様が神様であるからこそ尊敬され崇敬されなければならないのです。

Philippians 2:9 tells us that “God also has highly exalted Him (Jesus)” and that His name “is above every name.”

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,

しかし、それゆえに、神はキリストを高く天に引き上げ、最高の名をお与えになりました。

Billy Sunday said in a sermon entitled, “Wonderful”: “There are two hundred and fifty-six [256] names given in the Bible for the Lord Jesus Christ, and I suppose this was because He was infinitely beyond all that any one name could express.”
「素晴らしい」というタイトルのメッセージではビリー・サンデーはこのように言いました。「イエス様を説明するに当たって聖書では256個もの名前が使われています。それはイエス様はどの名前でも表現しきれない、超越した存在だと思うからです。」

3. The name Jesus literally means, “God saves.” Christ is a title, not a surname; strictly speaking, the name should be written as “Jesus the Christ.” Christ is the Greek version of the Hebrew word Messiah
   「イエス」という名前の文字通りの意味は「神様が救う」です。「キリスト」は苗字ではなく敬称です。厳密にいうとその名前は「キリストであるイエス」というべきです。ヘブライ語のメシアのギリシャ語訳はキリストです。

When Andrew met his brother, Simon Peter, he told him: “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).

John 1:41

それからアンデレはシモンを捜し出し、「とうとうメシヤ（ヘブル語で、救い主）にお会いしたましたよ」と言いました。

4. Messiah literally means, “the Anointed One”—in other words, One who has been anointed with oil and therefore, singled out by God as having special importance. The basic sense of the word Messiah is “the divinely appointed King of Israel.” The Messiah was the long-awaited deliverer of the people of God, promised and prophesied long ago in the Old Testament.
   メシアの意味は「聖なる方」です。つまり聖油で清められ神様によって特別な存在として認められているということです。メシアに込められた基本的な意味は「神様に任命されたイスラエルの王様」です。そのメシアは旧聖書の時代から神様を信じる人々を救うと約束されていた方です。

2. The creed directly mentions the virgin birth
   使徒信条は直接に処女マリアについて述べている

Why is it a big deal to believe that Jesus was conceived miraculously by the virgin Mary; that she became pregnant without having any sexual intercourse with a man? This belief is important for three (3) reasons.
イエス様は奇跡的に処女だったマリアの子としたで生まれたきたことを信じる重要性はなんでしょうか。つまり男性との性的行為なしで妊娠したことはなぜ重要でしょうか。三つの理由でこの信念は重要です。

1. It makes important connections with Old Testament prophecy (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:22~23).
   それは旧約聖書の預言と重要のつながりを持っているからです

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

それならそれでいいでしょう。しるしは主が決めます。見ていなさい。処女が男の子を産みます。彼女は生まれた子にインマヌエル（「神が私たちとともにいる」の意）という名前をつけます。

22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

22 このことはみな、神が預言者（神に託されたことばを語る人）を通して語られた、次のことばが実現するためです。23 『見よ。処女がみごもって、男の子を産む。その子はインマヌエル〔神が私たちと共におられる〕と呼ばれる。』（イザヤ7・14）」

Here, as elsewhere in His career, Jesus brings to fulfillment great Old Testament hopes. It’s not a fairy tale. It’s not a made-up story, fancifully conceived or falsely devised. It attests to the wisdom and power of God. Indeed, God fulfills His promises.
その人生を通して、イエス様は旧聖書の予言の偉大な希望を満たしたのです。おとぎ話ではありません。嘘に包まれた、素晴らしく考え出された作り話ではありません。この話は神様の知恵と力を証明しています。確かに神様はその約束を果たします。

2. Belief in the virgin birth is important because it stresses that Jesus was divine by nature, not by adoption at a later date. This is contrary to the poll mentioned earlier that people believe: 78% believe Jesus is the first and greatest being created by God.
   処女から生まれたことが重要なのは、イエス様は後に養子されたではなく、聖なる性質を持って生まれたと意味するからです。これは最初に話した調査結果の第3ポイントと異なっているところです。福音主義の信念を持っている人の78％はイエス様が神様が造った最初で最も偉大な人間と思っています。

Definitely NOT! He is God from eternity past but limited Himself into a human form as our Bible text today carefully notes.
それは間違いなのです！今日の聖書の箇所が示す通り、イエス様はずっと神様でしたが、人間の形になってくださっただけなのです。

かえって、その偉大な力と栄光を捨てて奴隷の姿をとり、人間と同じになられました。 そればかりか、さらに自分を低くし、犯罪人と同じようになって十字架上で死なれたのです。

The apostle John expressed it in this way
弟子のヨハネはこのように説明しました:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

1 まだこの世界に何もない時から、キリストは神と共におられました。キリストは、いつの時代にも生きておられます。キリストは神だからです。
14 キリストは人間となり、この地上で私たちと共に生活なさいました。彼は恵みと真実のお方でした。私たちは、この方の栄光を目のあたりにしました。それは天の父である神の、ひとり子としての栄光でした。

3. Belief in the virgin birth is important because it provided an important defense against early Jewish opponents of Christianity who suggested that Jesus was the illegitimate child of Mary (possibly hinted at in John 8:41).
   処女より生まれたことを信じることは当時のユダヤ人に対しての反論にも重要でした。彼らによるとイエス様はマリアと夫の間に生まれた正式な子供ではないとされたからです。

[Jesus said to the Jews]  “You do the deeds of your father.”
[An apparent mockery of/dig on Jesus] Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father—God.”

John 8:41

「そんなことをするのは、あなたがたが、あなたがた自身の父に従っているからです。」「私たちの真の父は、神ご自身です。私たちは私生児ではありません。」

Such hostile critics suggested that Jesus was the son of a Roman soldier, thus insinuating collaboration or collusion with the foreign army of occupation. The New Testament has a rather different—and much more exciting—understanding of who the real Father of Jesus was! Of course, God Himself. For He was born miraculously; through virgin birth!
このような敵心を持った反対派はイエス様がローマ兵士の子供という嘘も用意していました。イエスが外国占領軍と協力し、または共謀しているとほのめかしたのです。新約聖書には、イエスの本当の父がだれであるかという、かなり異なった、そしてもっと刺激的な理解があります！もちろん、父は神ご自身。イエス様は処女マリアを通して奇跡的に生まれました。

Many people struggle to believe the miraculous conception and birth of Jesus. Or, believing in miracles in general. To them, Saint Augustine has this to say:
この奇跡的な誕生を受け入れられない人々もたくさんいます。彼らに対して聖人アウグスティヌスはこのように述べた

“Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore, seek not to understand that you may believe, but believe that you may understand.”
理解することは信仰の報酬です。だから信じるために理解しようとしないで、理解できるために信じなさい。

3. It points to the truth that Jesus is God-Man
   イエス様は神人（かみびと）であるこ真実を示している

私たちに対するキリスト・イエスの態度を見ならいなさい。 キリストは神であられるのに、神としての権利を要求したり、それに執着したりはなさいませんでした。 かえって、その偉大な力と栄光を捨てて奴隷の姿をとり、人間と同じになられました。

1. If Jesus is just a man, a human being like the rest of us, He shares our need for redemption—in other words, He can’t redeem us. He is part of the problem, not the solution to it.
   イエス様は私たちと同様にただの人間であったなら彼にも救済される必要があります。つまり、彼には私たちを救う力はありません。彼はその問題の一部であり解決法ではないということです。
2. On the other hand, if Jesus is God, and God alone, He has no point of contact with us. He cannot relate to those who need redemption.
   その一方イエス様が神様だけであるなら、私たちと接する点は存在しません。救済が必要とされる方の気持ちは理解できません。
3. Jesus’ humanity provides that point of contact. And so, we arrive at the conclusion that Jesus must be divine and human if He is to redeem us. He is fully (100%) God and He is fully (100%) Man. In short, He has both natures. He is uniquely God and Man or God-Man.
   私たちとの接点を可能にしたのは、イエス様の人間としての生まれと人生です。だから結論的にはイエス様は神であるが、私たちを救済するために人間にもなってくださったのです。100%神様であり、100%人間です。つまり両方の性質を持っているのです。前例のない神でも人間でもあり、神人なのです。

Conclusion

The Apostles’ Creed does not refer to Jesus as the Lord but as OUR Lord. Jesus Christ has the right to lordship over our lives. This amounts to a demand for personal obedience and loyalty to Him as our Lord and Savior. It is possible to pay lip service to Jesus as Lord yet deny Him as Lord by the way we act (Matthew 7:21-22).
使徒信条はイエス様のことを「主」ではなく「私たちの主」として言及しています。ですから私たちの人生の主です。イエス様に従いイエス様に自分の人生を忠実に捧げる必要があります。自分の行動口先だけの捧げものによってイエス様を否定する可能性もあります。

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?'”

Matthew 7:21-22

わたしに向かって、『主よ、主よ』と言う人がみな、神の国に入れるわけではありません。天におられるわたしの父の御心に従う人だけが入れるのです。 最後の審判の時、多くの人が弁解するでしょう。『主よ、主よ。私たちは熱心に伝道しました。あなたのお名前を使って悪霊を追い出し、すばらしい奇跡を何度も行ったではありませんか。』

To recognize that Jesus is Lord is to seek to do His will. But Jesus Christ is not merely the Lord of our personal lives; He is also the Lord of the church.
イエス様が自分の主であることを受け入れるには、イエス様の教えに従おうと務めることです。そして、イエス様は私たちの主だけでなく教会の主でもあります。

John Kenneth Galbraith, in his autobiography, A Life in Our Times, illustrates the devotion of Emily Gloria Wilson, his family’s housekeeper:

It had been a wearying day, and I asked Emily to hold all telephone calls while I had a nap. Shortly thereafter the phone rang. Lyndon Johnson [former US president] was calling from the White House.

The Church (and our local church) owes its faithful obedience to Jesus Christ and to no one else. The church cannot and must not substitute anything or anyone for Jesus. If the church ever loses its faithful obedience to its Lord, it has lost its life and its soul.
全ての教会も、私たちの教会もイエス様にだけその忠実に従う義務を負っています。だからイエス様を別のものや人に置き換えてはいけません。もしそのようにしてしまったら教会はその命と魂をなくしてしまいます。

Finally, shall we all say with full conviction:
最後に自信を持って一緒に言いましょう。
