James 5:13-18
ヤコブの手紙 5:13-18 JLB
Introduction
There’s a story about a kid — one who had been sent to his room because he had been bad — not quarantined, but timed out. A short time later he came out and said to his mother, “I’ve been thinking about what I did and I said a prayer.” “That’s fine,” she said, “if you ask God to make you good, He will help you.” “Oops, I didn’t ask Him to help me be good,” replied the boy. “I asked Him to help you put up with me.”
ある少年の話があります。悪いことをして自分の部屋に行かされ「隔離」ではなく「タイムアウト」が罰された。しばらく経ってから彼が母もとに戻ってこのように言いました「自分がしたことに関して反省して神様に祈りました」すると、母親が「神様に自分を良い子にするお願いしたらその通りにしてくれるよ」。「あっ！自分を良い子にすることではなく、お母さんが僕がやっていることに我慢できるようにお願いしたけど」と彼が答えた。
Prayer is a high and holy privilege. As children of God, we can come freely and boldly to His throne room and talk to Him about our needs. Seven (7) times in this passage James mentioned prayer. Within these verses, James brings before us three (3) situations where prayer is necessary and that we can expect His power to move.
祈りは高位で聖なる特権です。神様の子供たちとして、私たちはいつでも神様へ接近して祈ることができます。今日の聖書の箇所ではヤコブは７回も祈りについて語っています。そのうち、３つの場面に置いての祈りの必要性とその祈りに対する神様の力の働きに期待できることが書いてあります。

Pray when troubled – verse 13a
悩んでいるときの祈り １３節
“Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.”
あなたがたの中に、悩んでいる人がいますか。その人は、神に祈り続けなさい。
The word, “trouble” means “suffering in difficult circumstances.” It’s not only physical suffering but mental and emotional anguish as well. This trouble is not necessarily the result of sin or the chastening of God.
英語では「トラブル」という単語が使っていますが、その単語の意味は「困難な状況に置いての苦しみ」です。それは肉体的な苦しみだけでなく精神的や感情的な苦しみも含めております。その「トラブル」は必ずしも自分の罪の結果か神様からの試練ではありません。
When suffering, James’ counsel is not to respond with grumbling (v.9), criticizing those having an easier time; neither should we blame the Lord nor swear (v.12), but with continual prayer. We should pray, asking God for the wisdom we need to understand the situation and use it to His glory (c.f., James 1:5)
苦しんでいる時、ヤコブのアドバイスは愚痴を言ったり、他人のセイにしたり、神様を攻めたり悪態をつくたりせずに絶えずに祈りに頼ることです。祈りを通して神様からその苦しみを理解できる知恵とその状況に置いても神様への栄光を称える力をお願いするべきです。
What can we expect in return for our prayers? Prayer can remove trouble, if that is His will. It can also give us the grace we need to endure troubles and use them to accomplish God’s perfect will. James 4:6 says, God “gives us more grace.”
祈りをしたらどんなことを期待できるのでしょうか。神様の意思であれば祈りはその苦しみをなくせる力があります。また、その苦しみに対応できる力を得て、神様の意思通りに進む力もくれます。ヤコブの手紙4:6ではこのように書いてあります。「神は私たちに、すべての悪い欲望に立ち向かうための強い力を与えてくださいます」
St. Paul prayed that God would take away his thorn in the flesh. He called it a messenger of Satan to torment him. But instead, God gave Paul the grace he needed to turn his weakness into strength (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).
パウロは神様にその悩みの種をなくすことを祈りました。その種をサタンからの悪質使者と呼んでいた。でも、神様はその種を無くすよりその種を彼の弱さから彼の強さに変えました。『コリント人への手紙２ １２章：７−１０節』
The role of prayer in our trouble is to place the aching burden into the tender hands of God, who will in turn renew our inner strength and make the weight easier to bear.
悩んでいる時の祈りの役割はその悩みを神様に任して、神様がその悩みに対応できるよう自分に力をくれることを信じることです。
Everybody doesn’t go through troubles at the same time. The second half of v.13 says, “Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.” God balances our lives and allows us hours of suffering and days of singing. The mature Christian knows how to sing while he is suffering. God can transform troubles into triumphs when we pray!
全ての人が同じ時期に悩みを持たないのです。１３節の後半の部分では「また喜んでいる人がいるなら、昼も夜も主を賛美しなさい。」と書いてあります。神様は私たちの人生を苦しみの日々と喜びの日々でバランスよく提供してくれています。成熟なクリスチャンは苦しんでいる時期にこそ喜べることを知っています。祈る時神様は自分の苦しみを喜びに変えることができます。

Pray when sick – verses 14-16
病気の時に祈る
James calls our attention to those who are bedridden and without strength due to a serious physical illness. I suppose it’s NOT a blanket formula for healing the sick, but he does give us a pattern to follow.
ここでヤコブは私たちの注目を病気で苦しんでいる人の方へ向きます。全ての病人に対する対策ではありませんが従うべき方法を教えてくれます。
What are the special characteristics of this case that James is describing?
ヤコブはここで説明して病人の特徴は何でしょうか

The person is sick because of sin
罪の結果で病気になっている(v.15b)
“If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.”
１５節「もし病気の原因が罪によるものなら、主はその罪を赦してくださいます」
This church member is sick because he is being disciplined by God. This explains why the elders of the church are called: the man can’t go to church to confess his sins, so he asks the spiritual leaders to see him.
教会のこのメンバーは神様に規律されているから病気になっています。だから、教会の長老達が呼ばれるのです。病気で苦しんでいる方は、その病気のせいで教会へ行けません。だから、教会の長老達に自分を訪れることを頼みます。

The person confesses his sins
その罪を告白する (v.16)
Confession is good for the soul.
告白することは魂に良いことです。
David testified
ダビデがこのように証言しています。
In the early church, the believers practiced church discipline. Confession is an essential part of prayer and of rectifying any wrongdoing. Others think that we should confess our sins ONLY to God or to a priest. But James clearly identifies confession of our sins “to each other.”
初代の教会では信者達が「教会規律」を実践していた。告白することは祈りの一部であり、悪事を直す方法でもあります。他人は神様にしか告白すべきと思っていますがヤコブはここではっきりと「お互いに罪を告白」と言っております。
There are certain matters we should not suffer alone. They should be shared and prayed about with a close brother or sister in the Lord.
あることによって私たちは一人個人で苦しむべきではありません。信者達がお互いに分かち合って祈るべきです。

The person is healed by “the prayer offered in faith”(v.15)
「その祈りが信仰によってささげられたものなら、病気は治るでしょう」１５節。
The original word translated “to anoint” refers to rubbing in oil for medicinal purposes. So, in James’ day this meant that the leaders were to come and administer two things: proper medicine and prayer. And for us today, James is simply saying that the elders should make sure we’re getting proper medical treatment and pray for us.
本来の「anoint」という単語の意味は薬として油を塗ることです。だから、ヤコブの時代では教会の長老はその病人の家に行って、ちゃんとした薬と祈りを提供するとう意味でした。そして、今日の私たちにとっては、教会の長老は私たちのために祈ってちゃんとした薬の治療を受けているかどうかを確認する役割です。
God can heal with or without means; in each case, it is God who does the healing.
手段があってもなくっても神様は病人を直せます。なぜなら、直されるのは神様の力ですから。

Pray for the nation – verses 17-18
国家のために祈る
The background to this passage is found the OT, 1 Kings 17-18. Wicked King Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, had led the people of Israel from the Lord and into the worship of Baal. God punished the nation by holding back rain for 3 ½ years.
この箇所の背景は旧聖書の列王記1 17〜18にあります。アハブ王とその妻ジジベルはイスラエルの人々を神様の方からバアルの方へ導いた。だから、神様は３年間に渡って彼らの罰として雨を降らせなかった。
The prophet Elijah went to the top of Mt. Carmel and fell down before the Lord in prayer. He prayed and sent his servant seven (7) times to see if there was evidence of rain; and the 7th time his servant saw a little cloud. Before long, there was a great rain, and the nation was saved.
エリヤはカルメル山の頂上へ登って、神様に祈り始めた。祈ってから７回にもその召使いを雨の確認をするように送っていた。そして、７回目にやっと雨雲が見えた。しばらくして大雨になりました。そして、イスラエルが助かった。
Elijah is as human as we are. The only difference between Elijah and many of us is that he practiced effective praying – he prayed in accordance with God’s will, he was specific, and he prayed in faith.
エリヤは私たちと同様に人間です。でも私たちと違っているところはその効果的の祈りにあります。彼は神様の意志に沿って祈りました。彼は特定した目的を持って、信仰を持って祈りました。
In view of what’s happening in the world these days, we have this opportune time to pray. We are called to pray for Japan, for the government, for its people and even for our fellow foreign residents. Of course, we should not forget our home countries too.
今世界で起こっていることをみて、ちょうど祈るべき時期です。私たちは日本のために、日本政府のために、国民のために、他の住民のために祈る時期です。もちろん、母国のためにも祈る時期です。
There is a necessity to pray for healing from the pestilence that ravages the nations. But, at the same time for us to see and understand our times why God is allowing these things to continue to happen. Are we being purified? Are we being challenged to have urgency of evangelizing the nations? Are we nearing the close of this present age?
今世界中の国々で問題を起こしているウィルスからの解放を祈るべきですが、それと同時に神様がなぜこのようなことが起こることを許しているかも考えるべきです。これによって私たちは清純されていますか。これによって福音のメッセージを伝える必要性が高まっていますか。この時代が間も無く終わる時期へ向かったいますか。

Looking back on these major areas of prayer, we can find specific applications for us today.
祈りの重要な部分を振り替えて、今できることがいくつかあります

Prayer should be at all times.
祈りは時に限らない
It’s not something we should do only at mealtimes or in moments of panic or when we’ve exhausted all of our own efforts to meet our needs. As the apostle Paul said, “without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The Puritans called this prayerful attitude as practicing the presence of God – keeping alert to His presence throughout our waking hours.
祈りは食事の時間やパニックに落ちる時間や自分のニーズを満たすための方法を全て使い切った時にだけするものではありません。テサロニケ人への手紙Ⅰ 5:17 に書いてある通り「17 いつも祈りに励みなさい」。清教徒の信者はこの祈りの態度を「神様の存在を実践」すると呼んだ。つまり、神様の存在感を起きている時間にすでに考えること

Prayer is designed for every part of life.
祈りは人生の全てのことに置いてできることです。
Trouble, sickness, sin, nation, specific needs – nothing is too big or too small for prayer. If it’s a concern – ask!
悩み、病気、罪、国家、特定のニーズなどどんな大きなことについても小さなことについても祈りができます。悩みであれば祈りなさい！

Prayer is not a substitute for responsible and intelligent action.
祈りは責任のある行動や知的な行動の代行ではありません
Remember that the one who is sick is supposed to contact the elders and seek proper medical treatment. I have met people who tend to have “hyper-faith” or those who don’t believe in modern medicine. I’d say, “If you’re not willing to see a doctor and take the right kind of medicine, don’t ask people to pray for you.” Again, some physical illnesses may involve confessing sins and seeking forgiveness.
病気を持っている人は長老を求めてその薬をお願いするのです。信仰があるすぎているや現代の薬を信用していない方に出会ったことがあります。「医者に診断してもらうことや薬を飲むことを断る人なら、祈りは何の役にも立たない！」もちろん、場合によって、罪を告白して、神様の許しを得て治る事態もあります。

Prayer is not for the perfect, but the imperfect. Because we are imperfect and have needs, we need to pray.
祈りは完璧な人のためではなく欠点のある方のためのものです。欠点があるからこそ、ニーズがあって、祈りが必要です。
