Romans 13:11~14
ローマ人への手紙 13:11-14 JLB
Introduction
Margaret Storm Jameson, the English author, once expressed the view that we all spend too much time living in the past, feeling regret for lost joys or shame for things badly done. Even when our minds turn to the future, she said, we spend an inordinate amount of time longing for it or dreading it.
イギリス人の作家であるマーガレット・ストーム・ジェームソンは、私たちが過去のこと、楽しみを失った後悔や、失敗した恥ずかしい出来事に時間を費やしすぎていると指摘しました。未来のことを考えている時でさえ、私たちは過去を懐かしがったり、怖がったりしていると彼女は指摘しています。
“The only way to live,” she said, “is to accept each minute as an unrepeatable miracle . . . Work at your work. Play at your play. Shed your tears. Enjoy your laughter. Now is the time of your life.”
彼女は次の様に言っています。「生きるとは、毎分毎分を一度きりの奇跡だと思うことです。仕事をする時に仕事をし、遊ぶ時に遊び、泣きたい時に泣き、笑顔で楽しみなさい。今この時があなたの人生です。」
Be present. That’s what Jameson is saying. The apostle Paul has a similar line of thinking when it comes to our daily life. In fact, Paul’s exhortation can be summarized in three (3) action words: awaken, abandon and adorn.
今を生きて、とジェームソンは言っています。パウロも日常生活について、同じような考えを述べています。パウロの呼びかけは次の三つの「動詞」に集約されています。その３つとは、「目を覚ます」「捨てる」「飾る」です。

Awaken
目を覚ます
The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber (v.11)
目を覚ましなさい。初めに信じたころより、今はいっそう主の来られる時が近いのです。（11節）
A sleeping person has no awareness of what’s going on around him. We cannot expect him to answer questions sensibly, follow instructions carefully, or do the activities of one who is alert.
寝ている人は、周りで何が起こっているのか全く気付いていません。寝ている人には、気の利いた答えや、指示に従う事や、きびきびと行動する事を期待できません。
I admit, somehow the state of emergency and the so-called “new normal” made me feel as if life is in a standstill.
私も、緊急事態宣言や、いわゆる「新しい日常」と言う状況の中で、人生が止まってしまったかの様に感じました。
But, we are told to wake up! The night is almost gone. Now is the time to get up and act! This day matters.
しかし、私たちは「目を覚ましなさい」と言われています。夜はもう過ぎ去ろうとしています。今は、目を覚まし、行動する時です。今がとても大事な時なのです。
During his 1960 presidential campaign, John F. Kennedy often closed his speeches with the story of Colonel Davenport, the Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives.
1960年の大統領選挙活動中に、ケネディ氏はしばしば自分の演説をコネティカット州の衆議院議長であったダベンポート大佐の話で締めくくっていました。
One day in 1789, the sky of Hartford darkened ominously, and some of the representatives, glancing out the windows, feared the end was at hand. Quelling a clamor for immediate adjournment, Davenport rose and said, “The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought.”
1789年のある日、ハートフォード市の空が不気味なほど暗くなり、議員たちが外を見ながら、最後の審判の日がやってきたと恐れていました。議会の即時延期を呼びかけている議員たちの声を抑えて、彼は立ち上がって言いました。「最後の審判の日は迫っているか迫っていないか。どちらかしかない。もし、迫っていないなら延期の必要はない。しかし、迫っているなら、私は自分の任務を果たす事を選ぶ。だから、ロウソクの準備を進めてくれ。」
“Our salvation” is nearer now in the sense that Christ’s coming for the church is nearer today than ever before. By “salvation” Paul means the total blessing that we will have when Christ comes—including new bodies and a new home.
「救済」の時は近づいています。それはキリストの再来がこれまでよりずっと近づいているからです。パウロが語っていた「救済」とは、キリストの再来によって私たちが手にする祝福、つまり新しい体と新しい住まいのことを指しています。
Rather than fearing what is to come, we are to be faithful till Christ returns. Instead of fearing the dark, we’re to be lights as we watch and wait.
やがてくるものを恐れるよりも、私たちは信仰をもってキリストの再来を待つべきです。暗闇を恐れるよりも、光になり、見守るべきなのです。

Abandon
捨てる
“So let us put aside the deeds of darkness” (v.12)
ですから、暗闇に属する悪い行いを捨てて （１２節）
He tells us to put aside the undisciplined patterns of the flesh. He makes it abundantly clear that we must abandon sinful activities, behaviors and associations.
パウロは私たちに、規律のない行いを捨て去る様にと言っています。彼は、はっきりと、私たちに罪深い行動や、振る舞い、そして付き合いを捨て去るべきだと言っています。
Christians belong to the light, not the dark. We should be awake and alert, behaving as those who have seen the light of the Gospel (2 Corinthians 4). Moreover, no believer wants to be found in sin when Christ returns! “The day is almost here!”
クリスチャンは光の元にいます。暗闇にはいません。私たちは目を覚まし、福音の光を見た者の様に行動しなければなりません（コリント人への手紙２：４）。そして、どの信者も、キリストが再来した時に、罪に陥っていてはいけません。「その日はまもなくやってきます。」

Adorn
飾る
“Put on the armor of light” (v.12) and to “clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ” (v.14).
光の鎧を着て（１２節） イエスキリストで身を守りなさい（１４節）
The apostle Paul tells us to “put on” Christ. We know that His Spirit dwells in us and now we must adorn ourselves with Him. That is, to be more and more like Christ.
パウロは、私たちに「イエス様を身に付ける」様にと言っています。イエス様の聖霊は私たちの中に存在しますが、今私たちは、イエス様を身に付けなければなりません。それは、もっともっとイエス様の様になると言う事を意味しています。
Verse 14 informs us of the believer’s dual responsibility: positively, to “clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ” — that is, make Christ Lord of our daily life; negatively, to “do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh” — that is, deliberately avoid that which tempts us to sin.
１４節は、私たちに信者としての２つの責任を教えています。まず、「当然なすべき正しい生活ができるように、主イエス・キリストに助けを求めなさい。」これは、日常において、イエス様の様になると言う事です。そして、「悪を楽しむような計画を立ててはいけません。」これは、罪に繋がる様な行いは避けなさいと言う事です。
Paul mentions a number of sins in verse 13, sins that ought never to be seen among the believers.
パウロは１３節において、様々な罪について言及しています。それは、信者にはあってはならない行いです。
13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.
遊び騒いだり、酔っぱらったり、性的な欲望のとりこになったり、争ったり、ねたんだりして時間を浪費してはなりません。
Note that drinking and immorality often go together and result in conflict and division. How many homes have been broken up over drink!
ここで、お酒に酔っ払う事と性的な欲望のとりこになる事は、大抵同時に起こり、衝突や分裂の原因になっていると言う事に注意してください。どれだけ多くの家庭が、お酒によって崩壊しているでしょう。
The lifestyle of the rich and famous in Hollywood tend to set the standard for this kind of behavior.
ハリウッドのセレブリティの生活は、このような行いの象徴とも言えます。
Take for example, a news of not so long ago concerning Justin Timberlake (who’s married), “feeling guilty” after being photographed holding hands and getting his knee stroked by co-star Alisha Wainwright at a bar in New Orleans.
少し前の話題ですが、既婚者であるジャスティン・ティンバーレイクが、ニューオリンズのバーで、映画の共演者である女優のアリシャ・ウェインライトの手を握り、膝を撫でさせている写真が公開されました。彼は「罪悪感」を感じたと報道されました。
The compromising situation was described in this way: “He had too much to drink and got carried away,” a source told E! News about the 39-year-old pop singer’s interactions with Wainwright.
この様な、評判を落とす状況について、メディアは次の様に説明しました。「彼は飲み過ぎて我を忘れてしまった。」「３９歳の人気歌手のウェインライトとの過ち」
It is wrong for anyone and specially for a believer to “plan for sin.”
誰にとっても間違った行いですが、特に信者にとって、「罪を計画」する事は間違った行いです。
It can be said that when King David left the battlefield and returned to Jerusalem, “he was making arrangements to sin.” It was when he committed adultery with Bathsheba and eventually plotted the death of Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah (2 Samuel 11).
ダビデ王が戦場からエルサレムへ帰還した時、「彼は罪を犯す準備をした」と言う事もできます。これは、バテ・シェバと浮気し、彼女の夫であるウリヤを戦場で殺す計画を企てた時でした。（サムエル記Ⅱ １１章）
In the light of the soon-coming Christ, it is our responsibility to live sober, spiritual, clean lives.
イエス様の近い再来を待ち望み、私たちは堅実で、霊的で、清く正しい人生を歩まなければなりません。
Conclusion
I hope these biblical examples will help us understand how important it is to “understand the present time.” To make it count because this day is a gift and it matters.
私は、このような聖書の喩えは、私たちが、今と言う時間を理解する事がいかに大切であるかを教えてくれていると思います。悔いが残らないようにしなければなりません。今日という日は賜物であり、とても重要だからです。
Joshua 24:14~15 – Joshua
Joshua’s final speech was a challenge to make the opportune time matter. He challenged his fellow Israelites: “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve … But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Making today count is a daily choice.

Esther 4:13~14 – Esther
Esther preferred to stay safe and do nothing, but her adoptive father Mordecai wouldn’t let her. The fate of God’s people hung in the balance. A genocide is being planned against them. Mordecai stunned her when he said, “Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” He pushed Esther to seize the day, and she did.

David learned his lesson. He repented of his sins. Here he sings, “The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.” Later he wrote: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” David was very aware of the significance of today. He worked to see that each day counted and he helped others do the same.

24 今日こそ、主がお造りになった日です。さあ、この日をぞんぶんに楽しみましょう。
ダビデは自分の罪を認め、神様にその罪を後悔して、許しを求めました。
のちに彼は次のように書いています。「今、もしあなたが主の御言葉に耳を傾けるなら、心をかたくなにする必要はありません。」ダビデは、今という時がいかに大切であるか分かっていました。彼は日々悔いが残らないように生きました。そして他の人もそう出来るように手助けをしました。
Ecclesiastes 3:1~14 – King Solomon
Solomon wrote that God has made everything appropriate in its time. There is a time for everything under the sun. He realized in the end of the book of Ecclesiastes that we must make the most of each day in the sight of God.

ソロモンは、神様はあらゆる事を正しいタイミングでなさり、全てにはふさわしい時があると書いています。彼は、伝道者の書の最後で、私たちは神様の元で日々精一杯生きなければならないと強調しています。
Matthew 6:34 – Our Lord Jesus
Finally, our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, would tell us: Today matters. In the Sermon on the Mount, He tells us to seek first His kingdom, and all the other needs we have will be added to us. Following that challenge, He reminds us not to worry about tomorrow — each day has enough trouble of its own. Just focus on today.

34 明日のことを心配するのはやめなさい。神は明日のことも心にかけてくださるのですから、一日一日を力いっぱい生きなさい。
最終的に、私たちの救い主であるイエス様は、次のように語りかけるでしょう。今を大事にしなさい。山上の説教でも、イエス様は神の御国を求めなさい、そうすれば必要なものは全て与えられると言いました。明日のことを心配する必要はないと言っています。日々苦悩があるのだから、今日だけに集中すれば良いのです。
I would like to leave with you this morning the prayer of Moses as recorded in Psalm 90:12. Let his prayer be our prayer too: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
最後に、詩篇90:12に残されているモーゼの祈りを皆さんに伝えたいと思います。この祈りは私たちの祈りでもあります。

We don’t know what tomorrow will bring so choose to not waste a moment today.
明日どうなるかなんてわかりません。ですから、今日を大切にして、今という時間を無駄にしないでください。
