Introduction
A father with his young son went to a family restaurant. They ordered lunch, and when the waiter brought the food, the father said, “Son, we’ll just have a silent prayer.” Dad got through praying first and waited for the boy to finish his prayer, but the kid bowed his head for an unusually long time. When he finally looked up, his father asked him, “What in the world were you praying about all that time?” With the innocence and honesty of a child, he replied, “How do I know? It was a silent prayer.”
あるお父さんが息子を連れてファミリーレストランに行きました。ランチを注文して、料理が運ばれた時、お父さんが息子に「静かに祈ろうか」と言いました。お父さんはお祈りをし、息子の祈りが終わるのを待っていましたが、息子は非常に長い間祈りを続けました。息子が目を開けた時に、お父さんが「そんなに時間をかけて何のために祈ったの？」と尋ねました。すると、息子はこう答えました。「わかんない。だって黙って祈ったから」
I guess you will agree with me that prayer is an important part of our worship of God. Many of the worship choruses we sing are prayers set to music. Did you notice that the praise-filled Bible passages I read at the beginning of the service on Sunday morning are prayers offered to God? The apostle Paul puts prayer at the center of Christian habits we should have and to be in the spirit of worship.
礼拝に祈りが欠かせないということは皆さんも理解していると思います。教会で歌われる多くの歌も祈りに音楽を合わせたものです。毎週日曜日、礼拝が始まる時に私が「神様に捧げた」祈りとして聖書の一節を読んでいることにみなさんは気づかれたでしょうか。パウロは祈りがクリスチャンの様々な習慣の中心的な部分であると断言しています。
Today, I would like to share with you several reasons why prayer is such an important part of worship. Understanding these reasons can greatly aid our experience of worship both personally and corporately.
今日は、祈りがなぜ礼拝において重要な部分を占めるかを説明したいと思います。これらの理由を理解することで、個人的にも教会としても､礼拝の体験がさらに豊かな時間になるだろうと思います。

Prayer keeps us focused on God
祈りがもたらす神様への焦点化
Understanding Who we’re talking to helps us be mindful of our priorities when we pray. The first fruits of our prayer belong to God. It means the best part of our energy, passion, and creativity should go toward praising God and thanking Him for His work—in our lives and in the world around us. What a wonderful privilege it is to pray!
自分が誰に向かって語りかけているかを理解することは、祈る時の自分の優先事項を意識することに役立ちます。私たちの祈りの最初の成果は神様のものです。というのは、私たちのエネルギー、情熱、創造性は、神様への賛美と神様の働きに対する感謝に向けられるべきだからです。自分の人生においても、私たちを取り巻く世界の物事に対しても、神の御業は働きます。祈るということはなんと素晴らしい特権でしょうか。
The psalmists give us many examples of how to extol God’s excellence; to adore Him.
詩篇を書いた詩人たちは、神様の卓越性を賞賛し、崇拝する方法について多くの例を示しています。
We can follow biblical examples or use our experiences and knowledge to set our primary focus on God when we pray. Most importantly, let the Holy Spirit lead us in this exercise.
祈る時は、聖書の例に従ったり、自分の経験や知識を使ったりして、神様にまず焦点を当てなければなりません。何よりも、聖霊に導かれてお祈りをすることが重要です。
Another reason why prayer is such an important part of worship is because prayer ushers us into God’s presence.
祈りが神に対する崇拝において非常に重要な部分を成すもう一つの理由は、「祈りが私たちを神様の御座に導いてくれる」からです。

Here is an encouragement from the New Testament (NT).
新約聖書には次のように書かれています。
The truth is because of Christ’s sacrifice, a door has been opened to us. We now have direct access to God. We must make use of our access by approaching God in prayer with a sense of confidence and boldness, knowing that our prayers will be heard and answered.
キリストの犠牲によって、私たちに扉が開かれたという真実があります。私たちは今、神様に直接近づくことができます。自分の祈りが聞き届けられ、神様が応えられることを知ったうえで、大胆に自信をもって、祈りを通して神様に近づく必要があるのです。
Likewise, we should be sensitive to our spiritual environment. Prayer directs us into the throne room of God. If we don’t take a moment to absorb the implications of that, we can’t fully appreciate the magnitude of the event.
それと同じく、自分が置かれている霊的な環境にも敏感でなければなりません。祈りは私たちを神様の御座へと導きます。その意味を理解するための時間を持たなければ、祈りの力に感謝することができないと思います。
In one of my trips to the US, I was able to visit the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia. It is a museum and research center dedicated to preserving and presenting the story of the life of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur.
私がアメリカを訪問した時の話ですが、バージニア州にあるマッカーサー記念館を訪れました。その記念館は、陸軍将軍だったダグラス・マッカーサー氏の生涯の記録を保存・展示するための博物館と研究センターから成っています。
During World War II, the Filipinos found hope in his words, “I shall return” as a promise to finally liberate the Philippines and to achieve victory.
第二次世界大戦中、フィリピン人たちは、「私は必ず帰ってきます」という彼の言葉に希望を持っていました。彼は、フィリピンに自由をもたらして勝利を収めることを約束したのです。
Anyway, when I was at the museum, I had a better appreciation for the general and the history he made. I was impressed by his persona, his war exploits and his amazing leadership. But, come to think of it, he is also human just like us. He is no longer around. He died a long time ago.
とにかく、その博物館にいた時、私は彼が歴史を切り拓いたことに感謝の念を抱き、戦争における彼の功績と驚くべきリーダーシップに感銘を受けました。しかし、考えてみると、彼も私たちと同様に「ひとりの人間」です。そして彼はもういません。何年も前に亡くなりました。
As children of God, however, we have free access to the living God who made us. Prayer grants us a personal audience with the One who created the universe, who saved Noah and his family from the worldwide flood, who parted the Red Sea and the Jordan River for the Israelites, who saved Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the fiery furnace and kept Daniel safe in the lions’ den, who sent a great fish to swallow Jonah, the One who sacrificed His only Son, and who raised Him from the dead. Prayer is an astonishing opportunity, when you think about it. So we must constantly meditate about it. Brothers and sisters, the boldness that the author of Hebrews recommends for approaching God in prayer should be mixed with a deep sense of awe, appreciation and complete submission to Him.
神様の子供として、私たちは創造主である神様にいつでも近づくことができます。祈りによって私たちは、神様を私的な話し相手とすることができるのです。この宇宙を作られた方、ノアとその家族を洪水から救われた方、イスラエル人のために紅海とヨルダン川を分けられた方、シャデラク、メシャクとアベでネゴを燃える炉からお救いになり、ダニエルをライオンの穴から救われた方、大きな魚を送ってヨナを飲み込ませて救われた方、ご自分のひとり子を犠牲になさった方、その御子を死から復活させられた方に、私たちが直接語ることができるのです。そのことを考えると、祈りというものは実に素晴らしい機会なのです。ですから、つねにそのことを念頭に置かなければなりません。みなさん、「ヘブル人への手紙」を書いた著者は、祈りにおいて神様に近づくために必要なものは「大胆さと自信を持つこと」と語っていました。その大胆さと自信に加えて、神様に対する畏怖の念、感謝、そして神様への完全なる服従の心を併せ持って、神様の御座へ接近しなければなりません。

Prayer puts us in our place and reminds us of our purpose – Matthew 6:9~10
祈りによって自分の立場を理解し、真の目的に思い至るーマタイの福音書6:9-10
Usually, when people turn to God in prayer, it’s in response to situations in life, like a medical crisis, a broken relationship, a job loss, a setback, a sense of helplessness or hopelessness. People pray in times of desperation, imploring God to do something on their behalf. I suppose, we have a pretty clear idea of what we want Him to do for us. In such cases, prayer becomes a task to be fulfilled, an assignment. We give God a job and wait for Him to complete it.
大抵の場合、人々が祈りを通して神様に相対する時というのは、それぞれ人生の置かれた状況に対応しています。病気、人間関係の悪化、仕事を失くした時、物事がうまくいっていない時、つまり自分が無力で希望を無くしている時。私たちは必死になっている時に祈り、自分のために神様が何かをしてくださるよう懇願します。そんな時、私たちはかなりはっきりした「してほしいこと」を心の中にもっていて、その実現を求めることが多いように思います。祈りを通して、まるで神様に、完遂すべき課題を課すような求め方です。神様に仕事を与えて、それが成し遂げられるのを待つような祈りです。
God is gracious. He will respond to our supplications, though not necessarily in the ways we want Him to. However, when we pray in such a myopic way, we limit prayer’s potential in our lives. Prayer, in its most meaningful way, is a moment by moment acknowledgment of God’s place in our lives—and of our place in His will. He commands; we follow. He leads; we obey. He blesses; we receive. Didn’t the Lord Jesus taught His disciples to pray in this way?
神様は憐れみ深くていらっしゃいます。神様は私たちの願いに応えられますが、必ずしも望んでいる通りのやり方によって応えられるわけではありません。しかし、先ほど述べたような近視眼的なやり方で祈る時、私たちは人生において祈りのもつ可能性をとても制限することになります。祈りの、もっとも意義深いやり方は、私たちの人生の中にある神様の御座を日々認識し、そして、神様のお考えの中にある私たち自身の居場所についても思いを巡らすことです。神様は命じられ、私たちは従います。神様はお導きになり、私たちはついていきます。神様は祝福をくださり、私たちはその祝福をいただくのです。イエス様が弟子たちに祈りの仕方を教えた時に、このように言われたのではありませんでしたか。
By acknowledging God for who He is, helps us maintain a needed sense of humility and obedience. As we extol His virtues and praise Him for His power, His wisdom, His love, and His ability to bring ultimate good from any situation, we can see our own circumstances for what they really are—that is, He remains in control of everything.
神様の美徳を賞賛し、そのお力、知恵、愛情、そしてどのような状況からも最善の結果をもたらしてくださることを賛美しましょう。これによって私たちは自身を取り巻く状況の意味を真に理解できるようになります。あらゆる状況が神様の支配下にあるのです。
The apostle Paul demonstrated for us what it means to recognize our place, relative to God, in prayer.
使徒パウロは、祈りにおいて自分の立場を理解することの意味を私たちに示しています。
Question: “Whatʼs the best way to get a message to God?”
問題：神様に自分のメッセージを伝えるもっとも良い方法は何でしょうか。
Answer: “Kneemail”
答え：「ニーメール（Kneemail）」です。「ニー（knee）」、つまり「ひざまずく」ということです。
Paul’s kneeling posture reminded him to approach God as one who has great need, a beggar. We should approach Him in the same way. Even if we don’t have the opportunity to kneel physically when we pray, our hearts should be bowed to God, seeking His purpose and not our own.
パウロのひざまずく姿勢は、祈りを通して神様に近づく時、自分が物を乞う立場にあることをはっきりと意識させました。私たちも同じようにして神様に近づくべきです。私たちが祈る時、実際にひざまずくことができない場合でも、心の内では神様の前にひざまずき、頭を垂れ、自分の願いではなく神様のお考えを得ることを求めて祈るべきです。
Ivan endured all the horrors of a Soviet prison camp. One day he is praying with his eyes closed when a fellow prisoner notices him and says with ridicule, “Prayers won’t help you get out of here any faster.” Opening his eyes, Ivan answers, “I do not pray to get out of prison but to do the will of God.”
イワンはソビエト連邦の刑務所の恐怖に耐えました。ある日、彼が目を閉じて祈っていた時、別の受刑者に馬鹿にされました。「祈ったってここから早く出られはしないよ」と。目を開けたイワンは答えます。「私は刑務所から出られるようにと祈るのではなく、自分が神様のご意志に従うことができるようにと、そのために祈っているのだ」。
This leads us to the 4th reason why prayer is essential in worship.
これが、礼拝に祈りが不可欠である理由の4番目につながっています。

Prayer aligns our heart with God’s – Matthew 26:39
祈りは私たちの心を神様の御心と一致させるーマタイの福音書26:39
The most profound example of seeking God’s purpose in prayer comes from Jesus. In the Garden of Gethsemane, just before His arrest, Jesus felt the full weight of what He was about to endure. He begins His prayer by saying,
祈りを通して神様の目的を模索するもっとも深い例はイエス様の祈りです。逮捕される直前、ゲッセマネの園にいたイエス様は自分の犠牲の重さを感じはじめられました。イエス様はその時、次のように祈られました。
It was certainly an understandable request from someone who was being pushed to the limits of human endurance.
人間が耐え得る限界に追いやられていたことを考えれば、そのように祈ることは十分に理解できます。
But it’s how Jesus ends His prayer that resonates with us. He follows His anguished plea with these words:
ただし、その祈りに続けて、イエス様はこのように言われたのです。
Even in His vulnerable state, Jesus’ first priority is to align His will with His Father.
これほどまでに苦しい状況に置かれていてさえも、イエス様は神様の御心に従うことを優先したのです。
Our aim must be to follow His lead in our own prayers. When we cry with anguished soul, after we pour our hearts out to God, we should be able to pray, in effect, “No matter how urgent or important these things seem to me, they pale in comparison to the urgency and importance of Your will. That is my first priority.”
私たち自身の目標も、祈りを通して神様のお導きに従うことであるべきです。苦しみ悶えて泣く時、神様に自分の心を捧げれば、次のように祈ることができるはずです。「私にとってこれらのことがどれほど緊急で重要なものであるように見えても、あなたの御心による緊急性と重要性の前には色あせます。あなたの御心に沿うことこそ、私にとっての最優先事項なのです」
At a meeting of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Bobby Richardson, former New York Yankee second baseman, offered a prayer that is a classic in brevity and expressiveness: “Dear God, Your will, nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. Amen.”
元ニューヨークヤンキースの二塁手、ボビー・リチャードソンは、クリスチャンのスポーツ選手の集まりに参加した時、簡潔で素晴らしいお祈りをしました。「愛する神様、あなたの御心のままに。それに増すものなし、それに引くものなし、それに加えるものなし。アーメン」
That is the essence of worship and the essence of prayer.
それは礼拝の本質であり、祈りの本質でもあります。
