we’ve been singing and talking about a lot of things tonight. So my big question is…what is Christmas really all about?

Now, many of you will know that I love quizzes, so let me put this question into a quiz for you.

The answer is of course, ‘b’ – the presents! Christmas is all about the presents!

Tonight, as we come to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, I would like to look at the presents that the wise men brought to the baby Jesus because they tell us some remarkable things about this child.
今夜、私たちはイエス・キリストの誕生をお祝いします。賢者である博士たちが赤ん坊のイエスに捧げた贈り物を、一緒に見ていきましょう。
The first present the wise men gave to Jesus was gold. And I have some gold with me right here. Now, this is not real gold – they’re actually chocolate coins covered in gold foil.
賢者である博士たちがイエスにあげた最初の贈り物は黄金、金でした。そして、私は今ここに金を持ってきました。でも、これは本当の金ではありません。金箔で覆われたチョコレートのコインです。

The second present the wise men gave was incense. And I have some incense with me right here. I picked it up at my local 100 yen shop.

The third present the wise men gave was myrrh. And I have some myrrh with me right here. Actually this is not real myrrh, it’s coconut butter from LUSH which I was going to give to Remi for Christmas but decided to use here as a prop instead but let’s pretend that it’s myrrh which is, among other things, an embalming ointment (a cream). Who gives embalming ointment as a birthday present to a child?

In fact, why would the wise men give any of these gifts – gold, incense and myrrh – to the infant Jesus? The reason is that they symbolised some very important things about this child.
なぜ博士たちは、黄金、乳香、没薬のような贈り物を赤ちゃんのイエスにあげたのでしょうか？その理由は、それらの贈り物が、赤子、イエスについて非常に重要なことを象徴しているからです。

Gold – this child was a king.
黄金は、「この子は王です。」ということを表しています。 -
Incense – this child was God.
乳香は、 「この子は神様です。」ということを表しています。 -
Myrrh – this child would die.
没薬は、「この子は死にます。」ということを表しています。
Now how would you feel if you had a young child and you were having a birthday party for him/her and people brought presents like gold-plated toy cars for your little prince and sweet-smelling bath salts for your little angel – and someone brought embalming ointment because your child was going to die? I don’t know if they’d be a friend for long!
考えてみてください。例えば、あなたに幼い子供がいて、子供の誕生日パーティーをしたとします。あなたの大切な子供のために金メッキされたおもちゃの車のようなプレゼントをくれる人や、良い甘い香りのするバスソルトをプレゼントしてくれる人がいるとします。しかし、あなたの子供が死ぬと思っているので没薬という体の防腐剤をプレゼントするような人がいるでしょうか？そんな人と友人になれるとは思いませんね。
The first two gifts, while amazing, I can understand – gold because Jesus was the great high king who was prophesied about centuries earlier; incense because Jesus was God in human form. But why would anyone, let alone a wise man, give a gift of embalming ointment to a child?
最初の2つの贈り物については、少し驚きましたが、わかるような気がします。数世紀前に預言されたように、イエスは偉大で位の高い王になるからです。お香を捧げたのは、イエスが人間の形をしている神であったためです。しかし、なぜ、賢明な博士たちはもちろんのこと、一体誰が子供に没薬のような贈り物をあげるのでしょうか？
To understand why the wise men would give myrrh – an embalming ointment – to the baby Jesus we need to go way back about 4,000 years to the writings of Moses when he explained the process of atonement of sins before God:
博士のように賢い人たちがなぜ乳児に没薬をあげたのかを理解するために、約4,000年遡って、モーセが神への罪の贖いについて書いたことを読んでみましょう。
2,000 years later, the writer of Hebrews in the Bible explains this mystery in slightly simpler terms:

This is why John the Baptist, when he first saw Jesus at the Jordan river, said the everyone:

This explains why the wise men worshiped the boy Jesus with gold, incense and myrrh:
そういうわけで、博士達が幼いイエスを拝んで黄金、香と没薬を捧げました。

because he was a king
イエスが王だったからです。 -
because he was God
イエスが神様だったからです。 -
because He was to die a death that would bring the forgiveness of sins to all people and salvation to the world.
イエスが全ての人に罪の赦しを与え、世を救う死を担うことになっていたからです。
His atoning death is explained later in the the book of Hebrews:
神の贖いの死については、ヘブル人の書の後半で説明されています。
This is very, very profound teaching. We are all guilty of sin. We’ve all lied. We’ve all been selfish. We’ve all hurt others by the things we have said and done. And we’ve all offended a holy God by our unholy speech and our unholy living. No-one is righteous. By our sin, we are all separated from God.

But because of His great love for us, Jesus left heaven and came to earth for us. He paid the price for our sin by His death on the cross: the righteous dying for the unrighteous. This is the greatest act of love the world has ever known.
しかし、神様の私たちに対する偉大な愛ゆえに、イエス様は、天国を離れ、私たちのためにこの世に来ました。イエスは十字架の上での死によって私たちの罪のために代償を払いました：不義の者のために死ぬ正義者。これはこの世の今までで最高の愛の行為です。
This is fabulous news! We can have our sins forgiven and receive eternal life when we believe in Jesus and make Him Lord of our lives! It’s wonderful! But there’s just one thing: how do we know it’s true? I mean, it sounds good: forgiveness of sins, the love of God, eternal life. I’d like to believe it’s true. But how can we really know for sure that it’s true?
これはすばらしい知らせです！私たちがイエスを信じ、私たちの人生の主を神とする時、私たちの罪は赦され、永遠の命を得ることができます！素晴らしいことです！しかし、ただ一つ問題があります。それが本当であることを、どうやって知ることができるでしょうか？つまり、罪の赦し、神の愛、永遠の命が本当だということを、どうやって知ることができるでしょうか？私はそれが本当だと信じたいと思います。しかし、それが本当であることをどうやって確かメルことができるでしょうか？

How can we know that this wonderful Christmas message is true, and is not just fake news?
この素晴らしいクリスマスメッセージが本当であること、どうやったら、クリスマスメッセージが偽りの話、フェイクニュースではないことがわかるでしょうか？
We know this is true because after Jesus died, Jesus resurrected from the dead. He was seen by His disciples – they spoke with Him and touched Him and ate with Him after His resurrection, as did 500 other people over a period of 40 days.
私たちはこの話が本当であることがわかります。なぜなら、イエスが死んだ後、イエスは死から復活したからです。弟子たちにはイエスが見えました。40日の間、500人の他の人々も弟子たちと同様に、イエスと話をし、イエスに触れ、復活の後にイエスと食事をしました。

And when He went to heaven, He sent His Holy Spirit to be here with us. This is the Spirit of Jesus that to this day, still changes hearts, still heals the sick, still forgives and frees people from sin, still mends broken lives, still gives hope to the hopeless and joy to the sad, and still works miracles. The Holy Spirit of Jesus is alive and working today!
そして、イエスが天に行かれたとき、彼は私たちと共にここに入れるように聖霊を送ってくれました。その聖霊は今日（こんにち）まで、まだ心を変え、病気を癒し、罪を赦し、人々を罪から解放し、壊れた人生を修復し、悲しい出来事に希望と喜びをもたらし、依然として奇跡を働かせる御霊です。イエスの聖霊は生きていて、今日（こんにち）も働いています！
It says in the Bible that,
ローマ書では次のように書かれています。
Jesus lives! This is the gospel message. This is Christianity. This is what Christmas is all about.
イエスは生きている！これは福音のメッセージです。これがキリスト教です。これがクリスマスということです。
Christmas really is all about gifts. It’s about the greatest gift of all: God has given us His Son Jesus Christ. And the best gift that we can give back to God is ourselves. He has given us His life, so the only appropriate thing to do is give our lives to Him.
クリスマスとはギフト、贈り物のことです。クリスマスは偉大な贈り物全てのことを表しています。神は私たちに御子イエス・キリストを与えてくださったのです。私たちが神に与えることができる最高の贈り物は、自分自身です。私たち自身です。神は私たちに神の人生を与えてくださっているので、唯一、私たちにできることは、私たちの人生を神に捧げることなのです。
Let me finish by saying this: At Christmas, wise people still seek Jesus.
最後に次のようにまとめて終わりたいと思います。クリスマスに、賢者と呼ばれる賢い人たちはまだイエスを捜し求めています。
Let’s be wise tonight because we know that a relationship with God is the best thing we can possibly have in our lives.
私達の人生の中で得られる一番良いことが神との関係だと分かっているということで賢くなりましょう。
Let’s be wise tonight because no matter how good or bad our lives might be right now, we know that there is no situation that God can’t make better.
今の人生がどんなに良くても悪くても、神がどんな状況でも良い方向に変えてくださることを理解して、賢くなりましょう。
Let’s be wise tonight and humble ourselves, admitting that we are sinful, and need to repent of our sin.
へりくだって、私達が罪深いことを認め、罪を悔い改めて、賢くなりましょう。
Let’s be wise tonight and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead
私達の口でイエスを主と告白し、心で神はイエスを死者の中からよみがえらせてくださったことを信じて、賢くなりましょう。
Let’s be wise tonight and invite the Holy Spirit of God into our hearts to cleanse us and bring us new life.
神の聖霊は私達を清めて新しい命を与えてくれます。神の聖霊を私達の心に招いて賢くなりましょう。

We’re going to take communion shortly. I’m going to invite everyone to examine their lives. I encourage you to silently confess your sins to God in prayer, and make a commitment to give your life to Jesus, to receive His Holy Spirit in your heart and to follow Him every day. If you’ve never done this before but this sounds good to you, please do this, and then come forward with the others to receive the elements of communion and start a new life with God.
私たちはまもなく聖餐式を始めます。みなさんに自分の人生を振り返ってもらいたいと思います。自分の罪を静かに神に告白し、イエスに自分の命、人生を委ね、聖霊を受け入れ、毎日イエスに従う約束をしてください。以前、一度もそのようなことをしたことがないが、あなたが自分にとって良いと思うなら、ぜひそうしてください。そして他の人たちと一緒に前に来て、聖餐式のものを受け取り、神と新しい人生を始めるようにしてください。
In communion, the bread is a symbol of the broken body of Jesus and the grape juice is a symbol of the cleansing blood of Jesus. Eating the bread and drinking the juice is an outward sign of an inward change. It’s an outward sign of a new life starting within. Receiving them in faith, you begin a relationship with God, and a life in Christ.
聖餐式では、パンはイエスのくだかれた体の象徴であり、ぶどう汁はイエスのきよめの血の象徴です。パンを食べ、ジュースを飲むことは心の中に起こる変化を表現するということです。それは心の内から始まる新しい人生を外に現わす印です。信仰を持って聖餐式を受ける事によって、あなたは神との関係を始めるのです。キリストと歩む人生が始まります。
