Contagious Joy

Church should be the most joyful place in the world.
Do you believe this? I do.

Our primary focus for this year is discipleship and living the gospel is exactly what discipleship is all about.
We are reminded that most people will never read the first four gospels, they will only read the fifth. Us. We are the fifth gospel. So if we don’t look like Christ or represent Him well, how will people ever be attracted to Him or learn about Him or come to know Him?
D.L.Moody: “Where one man reads the Bible, a hundred read you and me.”

Last week we looked at living a life of unspeakable joy. Today we’re going to follow on from that and look at how a life of joy is not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of others as well.

True joy is contagious.
Have you ever seen a miserable person and thought, ‘I want to be like that!’? Of course not! True joy is attractive. It appeals to people. It draws people in. “I want what he’s got.”
(Let me share with you personally one of the reasons I’m able to persevere in the faith. The first is because when I look at Jesus, I think that’s exactly what I want to be like. The second is because when I look at the world, I think, that’s exactly what I don’t want to be like. I’ve seen the joy of God and I’ve seen the pleasures of the world and I don’t find it difficult at all to discern the difference.)
Joy is one of the missing links in effective evangelism today.

Bobby Conway: “Joy is the default emotional state of the true follower of Christ.”
What is your default emotional state? Do you naturally tend to be fearful? Doubtful? Angry? Depressed? Bothered? Lustful? Indifferent?
Joy is to be the default emotional state for Christians. Today we’re going to look at three key things for making true joy our normal state.

1. We are commanded to be joyful. It’s a bit sad that God has to command us to be joyful, but clearly He sees the need. It’s a command.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I’ll say it again [for emphasis], rejoice!” Philippians 4:4
That’s how much God desires our joy.
Compare Israelites in the desert – because of grumbling and sin, they were kept from the promised land. God doesn’t want grumblebums.

How do we obey this command without being dishonest, without kidding ourselves and others? Do we just pretend? Does practice make perfect?
Joy comes with a transformed mind.

Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Note we don’t transform our minds (by ourselves) but rather are minds are transformed by the Spirit of God as we submit to Him.
This leads us to our second point for today.

2. God is the source of our joy
– This was the focus of last week’s sermon.
Joy is always associated with the presence and fullness of the Holy Spirit.
Psalm 16:11 You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
1 Thessalonians 1:6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.

Joy is always associated with the presence and fullness of the Holy Spirit.
This is an essential truth for living life to the full. Sadly, many fail to understand this.

Thomas Aquinas 13C Christian theologian identifies eight of life’s biggest pursuits in the world.
1. Wealth 富- The problem with money is that money can only buy the things that money can buy. The highest suicide rates are in the wealthiest countries. John D. Rockefeller summed it up: How much money is enough? “Just a little bit more”.

2. Honour 名誉- Honour is wonderful if it’s from God. But the problem with honour in a human context is that it must come from someone else. We’re relying on someone else to bestow honour on us. But joy comes from within and is not reliant on others.

3. Fame 名声- 13 century problem! My ‘friend’ who hates fame and feels he can’t even go out. He is partially a recluse because he can’t stand to be recognised in public. Fame is
not what it appears to be. We are to make Jesus famous. Not ourselves.

4. Power 力- To be a Christian means to give up control, not gain it. We serve, not rule. Seeking power leads us away from joy because it seeks to put ourselves over others. But
joy is found in giving.

5. Health 健康- Good health is a good thing. God wants us to be healthy. That’s why Jesus did so much healing. But an unhealthy obsession with health is counterproductive. It can’t be our greatest pursuit because one day it will fail. Remember, death has a 100%
success rate.

6. Pleasure 楽しみ- A good thing. Often God-given. But, unlike joy, it cannot sustain us.
C.S. Lewis: “We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” (Youtube a perfect example of that.)

7. Virtue [morality] 美徳(道徳)- Virtue without God is just legalism. Virtue is good, but not
enough to make us joyful.

8. God 神- Aquinas: “God alone constitutes man’s happiness”.

Complete the following sentence:
“For me to live is, and to die is.”
Paul said: “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21

What does it mean to really live? Your answer will reveal where you seek to find your joy. Anything other than God means that death will rob you of all joy, and to die can only be loss – the ultimate loss. But for the Christian, life is Christ and death is gain.

Christians should be the world’ greatest enthusiasts. The word enthusiasm comes from the Greek words en and theos. “In God.” The real enthusiasts, the truly joyful ones, are “in God”. God is our joy producer.

So we can lose our wealth, our honour, our fame, our power, our health, and so on and still have joy, because our joy is not in any of those things. Our joy is in God.

It’s ironic that Paul wrote his joyful letter from a prison cell.

3. We can experience joy in spite of our circumstances. 3.

This is understandably a hard one for many. Are we supposed to be joyful if our friend doesn’t get into the school/university of their choice? Joyful if someone loses their job? Gets divorced? Is diagnosed with a terminal disease?
Of course not. That’s just mean. There are times when we need to be sensitive to the pain of others.
Paul wrote, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Romans 12:15
In fact, showing empathy to those who are hurting is one of the godliest things we can do:
Galations 6:2 “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.”

But we are not to let hardships get us down. Joy remains our default emotional state. Because God remains with us throughout our hardships so joy can and will remain with us throughout our hardships.“In all our troubles, my joy knows no bounds.” 2 Corinthians 7:4

William Barclay, Scottish theologian:ウィリアムバークレー、スコットランド人の神学者 “We are chosen for joy. However hard the Christian life may be, it is the way of joy. A gloomy Christian is a classic contradiction, and perhaps nothing has done Christianity more harm than overly serious believers with long faces.”「私たちは喜びのために選ばれた。

Never lose sight of this: the degree to which you enjoy God will be the degree to which God is exalted through your life.

The Westminster catechism: The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

If you’ve lost your joy, ask God for a fresh filling of His Holy Spirit. Pray.
