We are reminded that most people will never read the first four gospels, they will only read the fifth. Us. We are the fifth gospel. So if we don’t look like Christ or represent Him well, how will people ever be attracted to Him or learn about Him or come to know Him?

Joy is one of the missing links in effective evangelism today.

What is your default emotional state? Do you naturally tend to be fearful? Doubtful? Angry? Depressed? Bothered? Lustful? Indifferent?

Joy is to be the default emotional state for Christians. Today we’re going to look at three key things for making true joy our normal state.

1. We are commanded to be joyful. It’s a bit sad that God has to command us to be joyful, but clearly He sees the need. It’s a command.

How do we obey this command without being dishonest, without kidding ourselves and others? Do we just pretend? Does practice make perfect?
Joy comes with a transformed mind.

Note we don’t transform our minds (by ourselves) but rather are minds are transformed by the Spirit of God as we submit to Him.
This leads us to our second point for today.

2. God is the source of our joy 神は私たちの喜びの源
– This was the focus of last week’s sermon. これは先週の説教の焦点でした。
Joy is always associated with the presence and fullness of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 16:11 You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Joy is always associated with the presence and fullness of the Holy Spirit.

This is an essential truth for living life to the full. Sadly, many fail to understand this.

Thomas Aquinas 13C Christian theologian identifies eight of life’s biggest pursuits in the world.

1. Wealth 富- The problem with money is that money can only buy the things that money can buy. The highest suicide rates are in the wealthiest countries. John D. Rockefeller summed it up: How much money is enough? “Just a little bit more”.

3. Fame 名声- 13 century problem! My ‘friend’ who hates fame and feels he can’t even go out. He is partially a recluse because he can’t stand to be recognised in public. Fame is

4. Power 力- To be a Christian means to give up control, not gain it. We serve, not rule. Seeking power leads us away from joy because it seeks to put ourselves over others. But

5. Health 健康- Good health is a good thing. God wants us to be healthy. That’s why Jesus did so much healing. But an unhealthy obsession with health is counterproductive. It can’t be our greatest pursuit because one day it will fail. Remember, death has a 100%

6. Pleasure 楽しみ- A good thing. Often God-given. But, unlike joy, it cannot sustain us.
C.S. Lewis: “We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” (Youtube a perfect example of that.)

7. Virtue [morality] 美徳（道徳）- Virtue without God is just legalism. Virtue is good, but not

What does it mean to really live? Your answer will reveal where you seek to find your joy. Anything other than God means that death will rob you of all joy, and to die can only be loss – the ultimate loss. But for the Christian, life is Christ and death is gain. 真に生きることとは何を意味するの

Christians should be the world’ greatest enthusiasts. The word enthusiasm comes from the Greek words en and theos. “In God.” The real enthusiasts, the truly joyful ones, are “in God”. God is our joy producer. クリスチャンは世界で一番熱狂的な人であるべきです。熱狂という言葉はギリシャ語のenとtheosに由来しま

It’s ironic that Paul wrote his joyful letter from a prison cell.

This is understandably a hard one for many. Are we supposed to be joyful if our friend doesn’t get into the school/university of their choice? Joyful if someone loses their job? Gets divorced? Is diagnosed with a terminal disease? 多くの人にとってこれは理解しにくいです。もしあなたの友人が希望する

In fact, showing empathy to those who are hurting is one of the godliest things we can do:

But we are not to let hardships get us down. Joy remains our default emotional state. Because God remains with us throughout our hardships so joy can and will remain with us throughout our hardships.“In all our troubles, my joy knows no bounds.” 2 Corinthians 7:4

The Westminster catechism: The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

If you’ve lost your joy, ask God for a fresh filling of His Holy Spirit. Pray.
