It’s Valentine’s Day today, and I felt I had to preach on the topic of love. How often does Valentine’s Day actually fall on a Sunday? Once every 5-6 years at best? I had to seize the opportunity, because today is the day that love takes center stage. In the USA, boys take girls out on special dates. In Japan, girls profess their love for boys through the giving of chocolates.
今日はバレンタインデーですので愛の課題でお説教をします。どれぐらいの頻度で実際のところバレンタインデーは日曜日に当たるのでしょう？せいぜい5~6年に１回ぐらいですか？
今日は愛というものを中心に取り上げる絶好の機会です。アメリカでは男の子が女の子を特別なデートに連れて行きます。日本では、女の子が自分の好きな男の子にチョコレートを渡して告白します。
But of course, love, as the world knows and celebrates it, is starkly different from the love of God. And by comparing the two today, I hope to make the case that God’s love is so much bigger and greater and better. That’s what I hope we can focus on today…God’s love. I’m going to be quoting a lot out of the Bible today, and I’ll let the Scriptures speak and make a case for itself.
でももちろん、愛、世間が知っているようにバレンタインを祝うのは、神の愛からは全く違います。そして私は今日その２つを比較することにより、神の愛はもっと大きくそして偉大でありこの上なきものであるというところに視点をおきたいのです。今日は神の愛に焦点を置いてゆきましょう。
今日は聖書からたくさん引用していきます、そして聖書が語り、それに委ねましょう。
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. (1 John 4:7-21)
7愛する友よ。互いに愛し合いましょう。愛は神様から出ています。ですから、人を愛する親切な人は、その行ないによって、自分が神様の子供であることを証明すると同時に、ますます深く、神様を知るようになるのです。8反対に、人を愛さない不親切な人は、神様を知らないことを暴露しています。なぜなら、神様は愛だからです。9神様は、かけがえのないひとり息子を、この不正な世に遣わし、その方の死によって、 私たちに永遠のいのちを与えてくださいました。そのようにして、どんなに私たちを愛しておられるかを、証明されたのです。10この神様の行為によって、私たちは、何がほんとうの愛か、知ることができました。真の愛とは、神様に対する私たちの愛ではなく、私たちに対する神様の愛なのです。それは、私たちの罪を責める自らの怒りをなだめるために、神様がひとり息子を差し出された愛に尽きるのです。11愛する友よ。神様がこれほど愛してくださったのですから、私たちもまた、互いに愛し合おうではありませんか。12私たちは、これまで一度も神様を見たことがありません。しかし、互いに愛し合う時、神様は、私たちの心の中に住んでくださり、心の中の神様の愛を、なおいっそう強めてくださるのです。13神様は、私たちの心に聖霊様を遣わしてくださいました。そのことが、私たちが神様と共に生き、神様も私たちと共に歩んでくださる証拠です。14さらに私たちは、神様がひとり息子を世の救い主として遣わされたのを、この目で見、それを、いま全世界に伝えています。15イエス様を神の子と信じ、それをはっきり告白する人のうちには、神様が生きておられます。そして、その人も神様と共に歩んでいると言えるのです。16私たちは、どんなに神様に愛されているか、知っています。現に、神様の愛を身近に感じ、また、私たちを心から愛すると言われた神様を、信じているからです。神様は愛です。愛のうちに生きる人は神様と共に生きるのであり、神様もまた、その人のうちに生きておられるのです。17キリスト様と共に歩む時、私たちの愛は成長して、いっそう完全なものとなっていきます。そうすれば、さばきの日に、恥じ入ったり、うろたえたりしないですみます。それどころか、確信と喜びにあふれて、主の顔を見ることができるのです。なぜなら、私たちは、キリスト様と愛で結ばれているからです。18私たちを心から愛してくださる方を、どうして恐れる必要がありましょう。もし恐れがあるなら、それは神様が私たちに何をなさるかと、不安をいだいている証拠です。神様の完全な愛は、そんな恐れを、すべて取り除きます。恐れている人は、神様の愛をまだ十分理解していないのです。19これでわかるように、私たちが神様を愛せるのは、神様がまず愛してくださったからなのです。20もし「私は神様を愛しています」と言いながら、兄弟であるクリスチャンを憎み続ける人がいれば、その人はうそつきです。目の前の兄弟を愛せない人が、どうして、見たこともない神様を愛せるでしょう。21ですから、神様を愛する者は、兄弟をも愛すべきです。これは、神様が命じておられることです。
The love of God is mentioned many, many times throughout the Bible, and this passage is one very thorough explanation of it.
神の愛は沢山取り上げられ、何度も言及されています、そしてこの節はとても綿密に説明しています。
1) Human love is exclusive, but God’s love is inclusive. (vv.9,14)
人間の愛は人を制限しますが、神の愛に人の制限はありません。
We have a tendency of choosing whom we hang out with and shut out, pay attention to and ignore, like and dislike. In other words, we are very exclusive in our relationships. We all have our circles of friends, and even those circles have different levels of exclusivity.
私達は誰と付き合いそして誰を拒否するのかというのを選択する傾向があります、注意を引くか無視するか、好きか嫌いかです。言い換えると、私達は人間関係に自分の仲間以外の者を退けて受け入れません。私達はみな友達の輪を持ち、そしてこれらの輪でさえ独占権があります。
But God’s love is inclusive. Jesus died for the entire world and every single person in it. That means he loves both believers and non-believers. He loves Christians and Buddhists alike. He loves Pastor Andrew just as much as an ISIS terrorist. He loves you and me the same.
しかし、神の愛に人の制限はありません。イエスは永遠の世界の為に死なれましたそして全ての人に宿ります。イエスは神を信じる者も信じない者も愛しているという意味です。彼はクリスチャンも愛しそして仏教徒も同じく愛しているのです。
彼はアンドリュー牧師も愛し同様にISISテロリストも愛しておられるのです。
彼はあなたを愛しそして私も同じ様に愛されているのです。
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
16実に神は、ひとり子をさえ惜しまず与えるほどに、世を愛してくださいました。それは、神の御子を信じる者が、だれ一人滅びず、永遠のいのちを得るためです。
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
9それで、再び主がおいでになるという約束が、なかなか実現しないので、時には、いったいどうしたのかと、じれったく思うかもしれません。しかし主は、いたずらに日を延ばしておられるのではありません。かえって、一人でも滅びないように、罪人が悔い改めるために必要な時間を与えようと、待っておられるのです。
But the account that really speaks of God’s inclusive love is Jesus’ words when he hung on the cross for the people who were cursing and killing him:
まさしく神の包括的な愛は、イエスに罵声をあびせた人々やイエスを殺そうとした人々の為に十字架にくくり付けられた時、彼が言った言葉です。
34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
34その時、イエスはこう言われました。「父よ。この人々をお赦しください。自分たちが何をしているかわかっていないのです。」
God’s love does not discriminate between friend and foe, Chinese and Japanese, Americans and even Australians. God’s love is inclusive, and he loves all of us the same.
神の愛は友達や敵、中国人や日本人、アメリカ人そしてオーストラリア人の間に差別はないのです。神の愛は人に制限はありません、彼は私達を同じ様に愛しておられるのです。
2) Human love is self-serving, but God’s love is sacrificial. (vv.9,10)
人間の愛は利己的ですが、神の愛は犠牲を払います。
We have a tendency of asking, “What’s in it for me?” and “What can you do for me?” In our relationships, we tend to focus on how the other person could make us happy, help us, and give us an advantage. In other words, we are self-serving in our relationships. We think about what benefits us.
私達は“自分にとって何があるの”とか“あなたは私のために何が出来るの？”と尋ねる傾向があります。人間関係において、私達は人はどのように私達を幸せにしてくれるのか、助けてくれるのかに焦点を置く傾向があります、そして益をえるようにします。言い換えるなら、私達は人間関係において自分の利益だけを追求します。私達は自分にとって何の利益があるのかを考えます。
But God’s love is sacrificial. The picture of Jesus’ death on the cross should be evidence enough of God’s great sacrifice for us. Again:
しかし神の愛は犠牲を払います。イエスの十字架上に死んでいる絵は私達の為に神の偉大なる犠牲の十分な証拠です。
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
16実に神は、ひとり子をさえ惜しまず与えるほどに、世を愛してくださいました。それは、神の御子を信じる者が、だれ一人滅びず、永遠のいのちを得るためです。
And the following is one of my most favorite passages in the Bible, a reflection of the selflessness and humility of Jesus Christ:
そして次は、私の最も好きな聖書個所の１つであり、無我とイエスキリストの謙譲をよく考えさせらます。
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:3-8)
3自己中心的になったり、見栄を張ったりしてはいけません。謙そんになって、他の人を自分よりもすぐれた者とみなしなさい。4身の回りのことばかりに、とらわれるのではなく、他人にも目を向け、その行動にも関心を持ちなさい。5私たちに対するキリスト・イエスの態度を、見ならいなさい。6キリスト様は神様なのに、神様としての権利を要求したり、それに執着したりはなさいませんでした。7かえって、その偉大な力と栄光を捨てて、奴隷の姿をとり、人間と同じになられました。8そればかりか、さらに自分を低くし、まさに犯罪人同様、十字架上で死なれたのです。
God’s love does not ask, “What’s in it for me?” or “What can you do for me?” God’s love is sacrificial, and that’s one of the most awesome and beautiful aspects of his love for us.
神の愛は“自分にとって何があるの？とか“あなたは私のために何が出来るの？”など要求しません。神の愛は犠牲を払い、それは至上に素晴らしくそして私達にとって彼の愛の美しい局面の１つなのです。
3) Human love is conditional, but God’s love is unconditional. (vv.10,19)
人間の愛は条件付きですが、神の愛は無条件です。
We have a tendency to love in response to something. Whether it’s to a kind gesture, affirming words, or physical attraction, our willingness to show love to another person is almost always a reaction. In other words, our love is conditional on what and how much we receive.
私達は何かに反応して愛する傾向があります。それは親切な仕草、確信の言葉、若しくは 肉体的な魅力があるかどうか、他の人に愛を示すのに私達の意欲はほぼ常に反応します。言い換えれば、私達の愛は何か条件付きであったり、又どのくらい得るものがあるのかを考えます。
But God’s love is unconditional. It is not a reaction or response. He is the initiator. And his love does not wax and wane based on what we do and don’t do. It is constant. It is without condition.
しかし神の愛は無条件です。考えたり反応したりしません。彼は創始者です。
彼の愛は盛んになったり、衰えたりしません私達が何をするかしないかを基準にしません。それは一定です。神の愛は条件付きではないのです。
6 Surely your goodness and love follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23:6)
6生きている限り、主の恵みといつくしみが、私についてきます。やがて、私は主の家に着き、いつまでもおそばで暮らすことでしょう。
And here’s another one of my favorite passages in the Bible, a reflection of the depth of God’s love for us:
そしてここにもう１つ私の好きな聖書個所があります、私達への神の愛の深さを考えさせられます。
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-39)
37しかし、こうした中にあっても、私たちは、いのちを投げ出してまで愛してくださったキリスト様によって、圧倒的な勝利を得るのです。38神様の愛から私たちを引き離せるものは何一つない、と確信しています。死にもいのちにも、そんなことはできません。御使いにもできません。地獄の全勢力を結集しても、神様の愛から遠ざけることはできません。今日の恐れも、明日の不安も同様です。39あるいは、私たちがどこにいようと――空高くのぼっても、海の底深くもぐっても――私たちの主キリスト・イエスの死によってはっきり示された神様の愛から、私たちを引き離せるものは、何一つありません。
God’s love is not a response to our love for him. He first loved us, and “while we were still sinners, he died for us.” (Romans 5:8) And God’s love never fails, even though we constantly fail him. There is nothing we can do to make God love us more, and there is nothing we can do to make God love us less. God’s love for us is unchanging, because it’s unconditional.
神の愛は、私達が神を愛するから応答されるのではありません。彼は先ず始めに私達を愛してくださり、そして“私達がまだ罪人であった頃、彼は私達のために死んでくださったのです”（ローマ人への手紙5:8）そして神の愛は私達が常に失敗しても決して見捨てることはありません。私達が神に私達をもっと愛してもらうように出来ることは何もありません、そして私達が神に愛されない様にする事も出来ません。神の私達に対す愛は変わりません、それが無条件なのです。
So, our love is exclusive, but God’s love is inclusive. Our love is self-serving, but God’s love is unconditional. And our love is conditional, but Gods’ love is unconditional. What I really like about today’s passage is that it doesn’t just leave us with describing how great God’s love is. It goes on to challenge us, to show us a more excellent way. It calls us to respond to this great love of God. Which brings me to the fourth and last point:
なので、私達の愛は人を制限します、しかし神の愛は制限がありません。
私達の愛は自分の利益だけを追求します、しかし神の愛は無条件です。そして私達の愛は条件付きですが、神の愛は無条件なのです。
本当に私は今日の聖書個所について好きなのはどのように神の素晴らしい愛について私達に述べられてるそれだけではありません。
それは私達に挑戦へと導き私達により優れた方法を表しているのです。
それは神のこの偉大な愛に応える為に私達を召しているのです。では４つ目、最後のポイントへと進みます。
4) Human love is imperfect, but God’s love is perfect. (v.18)
人間の愛は不完全ですが、神の愛は完全です。
That is the reality. God is holy and perfect, and therefore his love is perfect. In turn, we are imperfect, and thus only capable of loving imperfectly. Billy Joel may say that “we’re only human” and that “we’re supposed to make mistakes.” Michael Jackson may say, “If they say, ‘Why? Why?’ Tell ’em that is human nature.”
それが現実です。神は聖霊であり完全な方です、従って彼の愛は完璧なのです。
逆に私達は不完全な者です、だから不完全に愛する事しか出来ません。
ビリージョエルは“我々はただの人間”と言うかもしれませんそして“我々は間違いをする者だ”と言うかも知れません。マイケルジャクソンは“どうして？どうして？”それが人間の本性だ。って言うかも知れません。
They may be singing truth, but it can’t be an excuse to not try. God has given us the example of what love should look like. He has given us the standard of how beautiful and pure love ought to be. And we, as Christians, are to emulate that love. As Christians, if we profess that we love God, then we are to show that same love to others. I’ll leave you with the closing challenge from our passage today:
彼らは真実を歌っているのかも知れません、しかしそれはしようとしない為の言い訳にする事は出来ません。神は私達に愛とはどのようなものなのかという事例を与えています。彼は私達にどのように美しく純粋な愛であるべく標準を表し与え下さっています。
だから、私達はクリスチャンとしてその愛を倣うのです。（手本としてまねる）
クリスチャンとして、もし私達が神を愛していると告白するなら、
私達は他の人にもその同じ愛を示すのです。
今日の聖書箇所を通してあなたがたが実践できますように。
