Our topic for today is trusting in the Lord and obeying what he says. There is a hymn I sung growing up in the church “Trust and Obey”, maybe some of you know it. The intended meaning, according to an article I read on the writer, was that he planned to trust God for his salvation and do what he could to obey God’s will. I would like to add not only trusting in salvation, but trusting in God’s provision and plan for us.
今日の話題は、主に信頼し従うということです。この中にはこの賛美歌を知っている人もいるかもしれませんが、私が育った教会では、「信頼と服従」という賛美歌を歌っていました。作家についての記事によるとこの賛美歌の意図された意味は、救いのために神を信頼し、神の意志に従うというものでした。私は神の救いを信頼するだけではなく、神の備えと私たちへの計画を信頼するということを追加したいと思います。
Jonah gives us an interesting example of obeying what God asks. But I’m NOT going to talk about the most memorable part of the story of Jonah, the disobedience part… him being thrown into the sea and swallowed by a big fish. The second part of the story is even better. God shows his love, forgiveness and grace on people. Also, how God uses his people to help others. If it has been awhile, I recommend you take some time to read the short book of Jonah again.
A bible passage that has always been very interesting to me was when Jesus sent out the twelve disciples in Luke 9:2-6.
ヨナは神が尋ねた事への従いに興味深い例を示します。しかし、私はヨナの物語の中で最も記憶に残る部分について話をするつもりはありません。不服従な彼を水中に投入し、大きな魚に飲み込まれました。物語の後半はさらに良いです。神は人々に彼の愛、赦しと恵みを示します。また、どのように神は神の人々を遣い他の人を助けるかを示します。しばらくヨナ書を読んでいない場合は、再びヨナ書を読むことをお勧めします。
いつも私にとって非常に興味深い聖書箇所はイエス様が１２人の弟子を送り出すという
ルカの福音書9:2-6です。
2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

The disciples listened, trusted, and obeyed. By those actions, God was able to work miracles and the disciples could proclaim the good news to people everywhere.
弟子たちは、耳を傾け、信頼し、従いました。それらの行いを通して神は奇跡を起こし、彼らは世界中の人々に福音を告げることができました。
Now there is a reason why this passage means so much to me and if you allow, I would like to share a testimony of God’s love and provision when we trust and obey.
この一節は私にとってとても重要であり、もしよければ、私たちが神を信頼したときに起こる神の愛と備えという証しを共有したいと思います。
Following university, I first came to Japan as a missionary. I didn’t make a plan or prepare at all, no church backing or mission group support. The plan was a short 6 months to a year trip, to feel out and understand the mission field in Japan and see what God had for me. Simply, I just bought a plane ticket. I had no idea where I was living or how I would financially provide for myself. I knew I was to come and had an incredible amount of peace in my heart that I was to just go.
大学を出て、宣教師として初めて来日しました。私は何も計画を立てず、準備もせず、また全く教会や宣教グループの支援を受けませんでした。計画では６ヶ月ほど、宣教の仕事を探り、神が私のために何があるかというのを見るというものでした。ただ私は飛行機のチケットを買っただけでした。私は経済的にどのように自分に備え、またどこに住むのかも全くわかっていませんでした。とにかく私は私が日本へ行くということに対して、心に信じられないほどの平穏を感じていました。
That peace might just have been what Pierre talked about at the beginning of this month with fruits of the spirit.
その平穏とは、今月の初めにピエールさんが話した精霊の実だったのかもしれません。
Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.

If you know Jesus Christ as your savior, you should also know the Spirit of God in you. This doesn’t mean everything is going to be smooth and dandy (good and well). Troubles and challenges will continue to come in your life but that God is in control.
もしもあなたがイエス·キリストを救い主として知っている場合は、あなたの中に精霊が宿ることを知る必要があります。これは、すべてがうまく行くという意味ではありません。悩みや課題は、あなたの人生において起こり続けますが、神が状況を支配されています。
On my way to Japan, I met a Korean woman who happened to be a former short term missionary in Japan. She gave me the name and address of a church in Osaka. The first Sunday after I arrived, I visited that church. Following the service the pastor came up to me and offered me a place to stay.
For me, hearing those words from the pastor brought a confirmation of how amazing our God is. Someone who had no idea who I was or anything about me, felt or heard the words of God and provided exactly what I needed.
日本へ来る途中、日本で短期宣教師であった韓国人女性に会いました。彼女は私に大阪の教会の名前と住所を教えてくれました。私が到着した最初の日曜日に、私はその教会を訪問しました。礼拝後、牧師先生が私のところへ来て、私に滞在する場所を提供してくれました。
私とって、牧師先生からその言葉を聞いたことは、私たちの神がどんなに素晴らしいかということを確認するという事でした。私について何も知らない誰かが、神の声を聞いて、私に必要とするものを与えてくれたのです。
1. Listen to what God has for you.
1. 神様があなたのために備えているもの聞いて下さい。
That pastor was at that moment, and still is today, very sensitive at hearing God’s voice. We all need to listen and act on what God tells us to do, as it might be a saving grace to someone else. God uses his followers to do great things.
その牧師先生はその当時、そして今でも、神の声に非常に敏感です。私たちは皆、神が何を教えているのか耳を傾け、行動する必要があり、またそれが他の誰かを救うかもしれません。神は偉大なことを行うために彼の人々を遣います。
John 10:27
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

My story continues… In the following months, I assisted with that church’s homeless outreach ministry, their school programs, and the pastor also connected me to a campus ministry. I volunteered all my time everyday. Without having a financial church backing, I had no income. I also received no income from the work I was doing here. I wanted to trust the Lord as I attempted to obey what I felt called to do.
私の話は続き、次の数ヶ月で、その教会のホームレスの方の支援活動や、学校のプログラムへの参加、また牧師先生は、大学生支援活動に私をつなぎ合わせてくれました。私は毎日すべての自分の時間を捧げました。私は教会の支援を受けていなかったので収入がなく、また、私がここでしていた仕事は無報酬でしていました。私が呼びだされ、感じた事に従い、私は主を信頼したいと考えていました。
That trust was put to the test during a New Year’s Eve service when the offering time came. I opened my wallet and there was only 2000yen left. At this point, I also had absolutely zero in the bank and no idea where or when I would get any money next. I could have put 1000yen in or just let the offering bag pass… but I strongly felt God was asking me to put everything. I debated with God that I don’t know what I will eat tomorrow. But that same peace was felt that God would provide as I was doing what he had asked me to. So I placed everything I had in offering. The service ended and since it happened to be New Year’s Eve, the year ended.
その信頼は大晦日の礼拝中、献金の際、試されました。私は自分の財布の中に唯一2000円だけ残っていました。この時点で、私の銀行には預金は０でしたし、次いつお金を得られるか全くわかりませんでした。私は千円を入れるか、単に献金の袋を通過させてもいいのですが、私は強く、神がすべてを入れるように言っているように感じました。私は明日、何を食べたらいいのか分からないと神に訴えました。しかし、神が求めている事をする事によって、神は私に備えるだろうという平安を感じました。だから私は、持っていたすべてのものを献金しました。そして礼拝が終了しました。
それは大晦日の礼拝だったので、年が明けました。
So when midnight hit, I started that year with nothing but trust in God to provide. I went back to the place a couple other missionaries and I were staying. And a church member, I occasionally chatted in English with, was waiting for me. He handed me a 10,000yen bill and said thank you for chatting in English with me, Happy New Year. Then, in the morning, an elderly woman from the church dropped off a lunch box she made for me. And not long after that, a local business owner from the church asked if I would work for him part-time which schedule matched the church ministry I was involved.
真夜中になった時、私は何もない状態でしたが、神は備えてくれるという信頼のみがありました。私は他の宣教師たちと就寝している元の場所に戻りました。とある教会メンバーで、英語で時々おしゃべりをしていた、一人の男性が私を待っていました。彼は私に1万円札を手渡し、私と一緒に英語でおしゃべりしてくれてありがとう、また、明けましておめでとうと言ってきました。その朝に、教会の年配の女性が、私のために作ってくれたお弁当を渡してくれました。その後、間もなく、教会にいる地域の事業主よりアルバイトをしないかと尋ねられました。その予定は教会に関与していた奉仕のスケジュールに合うものでした。
When I think about it, that timing and those actions could only be possible through the work of God. There was no coincidence or chance but an example of God in control. I see those people as more examples of men and women who listened to and acted on what God told them to do. I wonder what would and could happen if all Christians, who have the will of God in them, acted on that will in every action and decision all day and everyday. Instead of doing, we sometimes ignore that voice or aren’t patient enough to even hear it.
私はこの事を考えるとき、そのタイミングやそれらの行いは、唯一の神の働きによって可能であると思うのです。偶然や運ではなく、神が支配されているという例でしかありません。その人々は神の声に耳を傾け行動しているという例を見ました。神の意志を持っているクリスチャンが、すべての行動と意思を一日中、日々の中でその意思に行動した場合、どのようになるか不思議に思います。私たちは代わりに、その声を時には無視したり、聞く事に忍耐強くなかったりします。
So, first make sure you are listening to what God has asks of you, next

2. Don’t let the flesh stop you from doing God’s will.

For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Allow His will to work because his purpose is much better then any stubborn thought of ours.
For me, I know that was a long story and testimony but it is something I can’t and shouldn’t forget. It was the lesson of trusting and obeying, for myself but also seeing it in others. We don’t need to worry about anything in life.
神の目的は私たちの頑固な思考より遥かに優れているので、神の意志を優先しましょう。
長い証をした事は知っていますが、私にとっては忘れてはならない事なのです。それは、自分にとって信頼し従うことの教えてくれただけでなく、他の人にもそれを見ました。私たちは、何も心配する必要はありません。
Because of all that, I came to love the verse you should all know by heart,
なぜなら、私はこの聖書箇所を好んでおり、皆さんも心で知っておくべきです：
Mathew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
マタイによる福音書 6:34
34だから、あすのことを思いわずらうな。あすのことは、あす自身が思いわずらうであろう。一日の苦労は、その日一日だけで十分である。
This verse comes from the same set of teachings of Jesus that Luke talks about in chapter 9, which I mentioned earlier.
この一節は、イエス様の教えの同じところからきており、前述の9章についてルカが語っています。
3. Don’t worry because God has your back.
3. 神様はあなたの背中を支えてくれているので、心配しないで下さい。
This message is reiterated a few chapters later in Luke 12:22-31, it reads:

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Jesus talked about this a couple of times and his disciples because people continue to worry. God will take care of us and is with us.
人々が心配し続けるので、イエス様はこの事を幾度か彼の弟子たちと人々に話しました。神は私たちの
世話をし、私たちと一緒にいます。
Some questions for you to consider are:

Are you listening to God? (Listen)

Have you done what God asked of you? (Do)

We need to give time to God, then seek and hear what he is asking of us. Followed by obeying and trusting in his provision along the way.
私たちは神に時間を捧げ、そして追求し、彼が私たちに求めていることを聞きます。そして、神に従い、備えるという事を信頼します。
I encourage each one of you, teenagers too, to ask God to speak to you. Ask him to speak to you and be brave to listen. For some of us there might be something we need to give up, the verse says;
“Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.”
私はここにいる一人一人、青年の方も含めて神があなた方に語って下さる事を尋て下さい。神に語ってもらうように問いかけ、思い切って聞いてください。私たち一部の中には、捨てる必要があるものがあるかもしれません。この一節で述べています。

What are we holding on to that God has asked us to let go of and to trust him with?
